OT - UPDATE Shegos is reffing in the East regional: RIT WINS!!!

Submitted by Mi Sooner on

I just saw Shegos call a minor on a RIT player, of course, it was a weak call, but he made just missed calling an RIT trip on a breakaway just moments before. a make up call on one he had just missed -- figures. McInniak (sp) might be the other ref. No names on the ref jerseys -- they are NCAA jerseys.

Now with less than 7:00 in the 3rd
(4) RIT 2
(1) Denver 0

with RIT scored on he power play.

that they took the names off of the ref jerseys for the tourney.

Athletically, RIT looks like they're a high school team relative to DU, but Denver just isn't capitalizing on their chances.

If RIT holds on, this'll be a hell of an upset, but DU is just pummeling the net with shots right now, and it really seems like they'll get one eventually here... if/when forced to go empty net, it'll be tough for RIT to keep it out of the net.

Huge hit in open ice... mostly called probably because the RIT guy taking the hit was half of the size of the DU player. Really tough call for DU.

on a BEAUTIFUL pp goal...

they had just flashed up 22% / 6th in the country for the RIT PP and I was thinking after reading all of the Hoover Street Rag previews that it was probably due to weak competition during the year... but then they potted it.

Pretty darned good game.

With 3 of the 4-seeds winning last year and this upset today, a bit more fodder for those who believe the regionals should be hosted by the 1-seeds.

Sure, maybe not as much $ generated, somewhat undue advantage, among other things, but flying #2 overall seed DU across the country to play a team that close to their campus is a tough draw.

I'm on the fence, but if this string of upsets continues, and is no longer just a blip, they might need to re-think the format a bit.

It's great to be an RIT Tiger.

Phase I of Operation Shock the World complete.

Will be facing off against UM in the championship before we know it.

Wooop.

Let's hope all the high seeds win the first round... I'd love to see Michigan vs. Alabama-Hunstville....

This RIT vs DU game reminded me of the AF vs. UM game last year. One steller goalie stole the game.

Miami isn't going to lose, The Brotherhood (If I may refer to them as such) is by FAR the most talented, deep, quick, strong, large, best coached team in the country. With the best goaltender, forwards and defense. By a large margin. They only lost to Michigan because they played like complete crap, I could have played better than they did that game. And don't even get me started on the refs. Rico will have the boys ready, he always had the boys ready. He's a 4 time CCHA coach of the year (good heavens I love Rico)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But anyways, they're on a mission, they're just way way way too good. Unstoppable. Did you hear they won the CCHA regular season?! Here, at the Harvard of the West we know our hockey and boy did the refs in those games we lost blow it. I wish the same refs that did the games we won did the ones we lost :-( But it doesn't matter, Rico and The Brotherhood (LONG LIVE THE BROTHERHOOD!) have been preaching 3 championships all year and they aren't going to fall short of their goal. This is Rico! And The Brotherhood! And Rico, along with The Brotherhood.! We're a dynasty. In short, we will not lose, your argument is invalid.

/sarcasm

TIP: Don't even start reading any Miami message boards, they all sound like nice, reasonable, well-informed, mature individuals until you read several of their posts and you understand that what they're really saying is similar to the above and they just make it seem otherwise because they think they're far smarter than you and consider themselves better than you. I'm not a fan of Miami fans, in case you couldn't tell. That's bad of me to generalize like that, but I can't help it.

Their team is REALLY good though (just not unbeatable, ala better than the Soviets like Miami fans think). And UAH has a losing record. In a weak conference. It would take one heck of a hot goalie for UAH and a massive game-wide defensive/goaltending breakdown by Miami for UAH to win. I think UAH will keep it close, they have a history of playing up to teams that should blow them out and Mimai, well see Robert Morris.

It's not impossible that Miami loses, as we well know anything can happen in this tournament, so nothing is "out of the question", but all the same I think "not out of the question" gives us (or Bemidji) far too much hope. Hopefully this jinxes them (I don't like Miami fans, did I mention?) and this doesn't jinx my jinxing them.

in case anyone cares.

UNH over Cornell 6-2
sets up UNH vs. RIT final in the East tomorrow 6:30 on ESPNU

SCSU over NMU 4-3 in 2OT (like 20 seconds into the second OT). Saint Clouds first tourney win in 8 tries. For comparison, we're 46-25 in 33 appearances. I just like saying that, because I think it's impressive.

Wisco versus Vermont will start after 9:30 (eastern) on ESPNU.

Tomorrow will be SCSU vs. Wisco/Vermont winner at 9 (eastern) on ESPNU.

...my MSEE at RIT, and this is a damn nice win for them.

They are also a pretty damn good school, and a few of their EE faculty would fit right in the EECS Department back in Ann Arbor.
