OT: Update on Mudbowl

Submitted by Chuck Norris on

Much has been made of SAE finally being shut down by their nationals and IFC banning fraternities from participating in mudbowl this year.

Here's where all of that stands right now:

SAE is currently going by the moniker "Flying Eagles."

No IFC fraternity will openly participate in mudbowl.

To remove the "but it's for the kids!" argument, every IFC fraternity is donating $600 to Mott's Children's Hospital.

Thre will be no mudbowl this year. However, Phi Delt (one of the founding members) will restart mudbowl starting next year.

To learn whether the IFC sanction purportedly bars individuals who are members of greek organizations from participating at Mud Bowl in their capacity as private persons seeking "only" to raise charitable funds and enjoy a good time. Are first term non-pledged possibly to be pledged GDI permitted to participate, for example. I see no valid reason why a bunch of Flying Eagles couldn't host a muddy football game and generate additional money, but I'm not involved, simply curious.

It wouldn't be at all the same if they did this.  The Mud Bowl is an event for the entire Greek community at UM, along with the rest of the campus, and has featured two sororities playing at halftime (perhaps the more popular part of the event).  You wouldn't have any of this if a bunch of SAE alums went out and played in the mud.  Moreover, the Mud Bowl was a true grudge match with intense passion -- it was especially that way when PDT and SAE squared off year after year.  I played in three Mud Bowls and it was as intense as any high school game I ever played and almost as hard hitting (this was in the late 70's and early 80's).  Especially I remember how freezing it was.  Glad to see that this special piece of college tradition has a future.

...(who I understand to be quite a dick) is going to be pissed when he finds out about these Flying Eagle dudes.  I would bet that they are forced to participate in some sort of rigged academic or atheletic competition. I just hope that there are no hijincks.

That sounds like a good resolution.  So glad to hear that the Phi Delts are carrying it forward.  The game actually began in the 1930's when the Phi Delts challenged the SAE's to the game.  Also, among the Phi Delt alums are Tom Harmon and Bennie Oosterbaan.

It may be a little awkward, though, since the field is on the SAE's property.  No doubt, however, SAE will restart in a few years, just as the Phi Delts did after they lost their charter in the 1990's.  Hopefully, SAE will do as good a job restarting as PDT did, and then the historic Mud Bowl can continue with the two proper contestants.
