OT- UofM mentioned in new movie

Submitted by HALOL on

University of Michigan is mentioned in this new Jason Segel romantic comedy, "The Five Year Engagement" Just seen the trailer for it, looks like another Segel movie that will be fairly funny but probably not worth going to the movies for.

I wouldn't get a big head about it. Some M merch. makes a small showing in the movie "Knuckle" as well. If you haven't seen it, well... it would be a perfect place for some OSU track jackets instead.

NBC has a new show called 'best friends forever' in which Michigan gets mentioned quite a bit.  the main guy has an inflatable Michigan chair, he talks about watching 'the Wolverines game', etc.  dunno if the show will be any good, but seeing the maize & blue on national TV catches my eye every time.

Yeah, I had to drive through Main Street all last summer and was confused by the fake snow, but Ann Arbor looks great in the trailor (Ann Arbor always looks great though).

My two most favorite Michigan in movie moments:

1. In Ordinary People when Donald Sutherland says something to the effect that one day "our kids will go off to Harvard or Michigan,."

2. In Body Heat when William Hurt jogs in his Michigan t-shirt.

edit: Both of these could be remembered incorrectly.

Yep.  The game shown in the 'Air Force One' movie is the 1990 Notre Dame game (which was a crushing 28-24 loss) but in the movie, the president is a Michigan fan and UM wins 14-13.

In 'The Big Chill,' the characters are watching the 1980 UM/MSU game and the TV shows John Wangler throwing a short pass to Craig Dunaway for 50 yards.  Then the gang throws their popcorn at the screen when the play is called back for clipping.  In the actual game, there was no flag on that play.

I really love it when a Michigan football sighting is thrown into a movie at random.  A boring romantic comedy that Mattew Perry did with Neve Campbell called 'Three to tango,' shows Perry and his buddies sitting around the TV watching the 1992 UM/MSU game but you can hear Frank Beckman's voice over the TV.  That was the only thing that saved the movie for me.

My favorite U of M movie moment was in "The Pink Panther Strikes Back" (one of the good versions with Peter Sellers).  In one scene that's meant to poke fun of the president at the time (Gerald Ford), the president of the US is watching the last few seconds of a Michigan football game when the scene gets interruped by the villain taking over all tv's to give his demands to not blow up the UN building.

And what's the first thing the president says when the villain's speech is over? "Did Michigan score?"

Where the ESU Timberwolves play their big game against Michigan, with Bo doing color commentary.  It was supposed to be all sad when "our team" loses to big, bad Michigan...but in the theater in Ann Arbor I was in the crowd cheered.

There was an Indy film that was shot in Ann Arbor called Answer This. It's a pretty good movie and worth a watch if only for picking out all of the places in the movie. There is a scene in there that was shot inside the Big House during the 09 WMU game, so that was particularly cool for me.

Pretty good movie? Answer This was straight up terrible even if you get past the disturbing premise of like 6th year phd student with a freshman in his class.  Also can't believe this thread has gotten this far without anyone mentioning the references in the american pie series.

What I'm sure they explain somehow in the movie, but I do not understand at all from the trailer, is why they have to delay the wedding just because they have to move to Ann Arbor. I mean, it looks like Jason Segel's character moves with Emily Blunt's, right? If he stayed in San Francisco, fine, but otherwise...

I was just guessing I have no idea, its a movie they are probably just delaying it so Segel can realize that he is in love with someone else, someone named Lily Aldrin and will move to New York and become a lawyer and be bestfriends with a guy named Ted and Hang out at McClarens.

No, I'm pretty sure it's so he can be an immature jerk about it most of the movie and then have a sudden realization that he needs to grow up, and then do a whole bunch of maturing in the last five minutes of the movie. Roll credits.

It just looked like he was visiting her in Ann Arbor. It's a long distance commuting relationship and they wanted to wait 2 years so they could be together with no distance before they got married. Worst sentence construction ever.  Point is, they thought they had a timeline with the 2 year contract and were planning their lives around that.  At least, that's what I gathered from the trailer.

I'm impressed that Blunt's character gets a job simply from receiving her undergrad admissions acceptance letter.  That's the Michigan Difference.

Most of the movie, if nothing's changed from the script, takes place in Ann Arbor. Emily Blunt's character is a grad student at UM and Jason Segel's character works at Zingerman's.

Based off what I read about a year and a half ago or so...
