He has a big name and I'm sure these kids have seen him on Sportscenter
well that's just, like, your opinion, man
He has a big name and I'm sure these kids have seen him on Sportscenter
Seeing as the chance he ends up at Tennessee is negligible.
Negligible? More like negatitve.
If you are going to commit recruiting violations, you might as well win some conference games for it.
Well if they don't win any conference games the NCAA can't come back 3-5 years from now and take away any victories...
Good insight. Tennessee losing every conference game is a strategic move. Dooley's mom was right all along, Derek sure is a smart fella.
And she's a fart smella!
that was my first thought
Hard to do when the other schools cheat more. :-p
Agreed. Cheating just a little doesn't get the job done in the SEC.
We need more defense against spread attack.
Derek Dooley should not let the door hit him in the hip or the ass on the way out
And hopefully this follows with a:
Hello Derrick Green
Green isn't coming either way.
You are the Debbiest of Downers.
Where else would he be going at this point? I feel as though it is pretty well established that every other program he was/has/is looking at is on the down swing while Michigan is looking up. Tennessee is a tire fire, Auburn is slowly smoldering, and Miami just needs someone to toss the match.
I do think Oregon has a shot, but, we shall see.
Is there a HC job where Gruden has not been linked to?
very few. if you read some of the Tennessee boards, they all are certain he's coming and its just a matter of time. it's rather amusing reading come of their crap.
those of us who wore out scores of F5 buttons during Domino's Jetwatch 2011...quite a few of us (myself included) thought Harbaugh was a done deal
I don't think Gruden is going to be seriously considering any coaching jobs.
But yeah, nothing is a done deal until [Big Time Coach] signs on the dotted line.
Well... I don't think his name was brought up for the Lakers' opening, but I could be wrong. Pretty sure he was at least considered for the US Men's National Soccer Team.

Chattanooga != Knoxville
So Tyler Bray wasn't lieing!
Also, it must make them mad to pay for a crappy product. Jk, sorta
What the fuck could this mean for Oregon? Similar violations involving the same shady agent guy, but replace assistant coach with Head Coach, i.e. Chip Kelly. And "money for hotels" with $25,000. It's gonna look terrible for the NCAA to hammer Oregon right after they make or potentially win the MNC.
The other day, Colin Cowherd was talking about Chip Kelly going to the NFL. Maybe he's taking the Pete Carroll path.
that Kelly is the head coach at Oregon by this time next year, but I'm not sure they'll hammer Oregon in general. Sure, they might get a bowl ban or whatever, but I don't think Oregon will get more than OSU got (which wasn't much).
Except this doesn't appear to wish anyone a Happy Easter !!! There needs to be an LOL moderating option, I hadn't seen this before.
Still, I don't know how much Oregon will get; they'll fire Kelly and he'll get hit with a show-cause and probably save Oregon from even a USC-esque punishment.
Well there is candy at Easter. And some of the candy looks like ducks, so "Go Ducks" could be code for "Happy Easter"
what college job has jon gruden not been linked to? and honestly, as a bucs fan, i wasn't overly impressed with gruden. he won a super bowl, yeah, but that was tony dungy's team. the years after that, they were just too inconsistent, and never made it past the wild card round of the playoffs. i also don't see gruden resonating very well with 18-22 year old kids.
I just can't see Gruden ending up at UT, when he turned down his "dream job" at Notre Dame. UT is a good gig, but he could have his pick of just about any NFL opening this off season. He also has a pretty good thing going with MNF.
but there are some rumblings on twitter connecting Tressel with TN, and the rumblings are getting a bit louder.
about that show-cause penalty too.
He's not going to UT. Too much hassle and not enough comp compared to NFL jobs.
My source in their AD (not a decision-maker) says top scenario is college coach plus staff with NFL experience, which narrows the field a fraction.
My guess is Kirby Smart. He keeps Sunseri at DC, adds pro OC, knows SEC recruiting territory, and Saban OKs with UT in East Div of SEC.
Has your source in the AD said that Dooley is as good as gone, or does he still have a chance?
Again, not a decision-maker but he's heard the stance from some key boosters. Athletic Director didn't hire him and local media grinding the situation.
Catch this: Dooley is 15-20, losing ground in-state Vandy, some ugly losses, offense dependent on 1 QB, defense not improving, average recruiting, $2m salary, new athletic director a year ago ... stop me when you've heard this story before.
Sounds like Dooley is gone. Did this happen on his watch or previous regime. Article mentioned 2009 and I don't remember the timing of the Kiffin departure.
Hamilton pushed out Fulmer, hired Kiffin, hired Dooley and hired Pearl for bball. NCAA issues in both sports on his watch. Yikes. Now doing charity work for Africa.
New AD Hart came from Alabama last year (another reason for my guess of Kirby as HC).
The fans hate Sunseri almost more than they hate Dooley but then again I know a lot of UT fans personally and they as a whole could possibly be one of the most irrational and delusional fanbases I've ever seen.
There is no almost. To a Vol, Sunseri is GERG times the circumference of Borges' waistline.
Kirby arrives and states the issue isn't necessarily Sunseri but a culture missing discipline and hard work. Sunseri knows the Saban process and wants a chance at DC redemption while Kirby goes hands on with D.
If year 1 is a flop, Kirby pushes out Sunseri. If it works, Kirby is a HC and defensive genius - and Sunseri probably leaves anyway. Plus it gives his OC a little breathing room in year 1 as all eyes on Sunseri.
No Kirby, absolutely no Sunseri.
What I need to know, is how is this all Lane Kiffins' fault, the connection is there, lets find it.
Kiffin is like a gift that keeps on giving, even when you don't want anymore
I told my USC-grad/Laker fan brother-in-law about 2 weeks ago that Mike Brown was the Lane Kiffin of the NBA. Like a week later he was fired. I hope that's a sign for things to come.
When you go to the family member's house that can't cook worth a lick, and every five minutes they go around the table and load another serving of carbonized turkey and rock hard dinner rolls on everyone's plate.
"Please, eat! I made so much!"
To violate rules and not win all the games is very un-SEC like.
/puts monocle in pocket
//turns up nose
Somewhere in a ramshackle hut decorated with stredded orange and white furniture and tennessee football preview magazines scribbled with obscene and arcade symbols, Phillip Fulmer is into his six glass of whiskey since lunch, somewhere between a maniacle laugh and asobbing, mewling cry.
Tennessee really, really sucks at hiring coaches.
If they can somehow overcome their massive hiring ineptitude, they would be smart to hire Jon Chavis. The guy bleeds orange. He played there and spent nearly 20 years there as an assistant. He doesn't have any head coaching experience, but that's not a luxury Tennessee can afford to be picky about right now. It's not like they have top shelf candidates lining up at their door. Chavis is probably the only person who would really, really, want the job right about now.
With Patterno gone, anyone could jump in and make that program relevant. They just have to beat us and Urban Meyer at recruits. Not sure who I will cheer for next week when we play Pitt.
Wait, yes I do. Go Blue
Out of all the ridiculous coaching rumors, reading the Arkansas ones are the best. Somehow each and every Razorback fan thinks Vince Lombardi, Nick Saban, and Bill Belichick are all dying to get to Fayetteville and the AD has set aside $4.5 Billion to do so.
I guess that's what happens when you spend too much time in Northwest Arkansas.
I think it's a joke sometimes when I hear another fanbase go "I heard Jon Gruden has already signed the contract to coach ______ football!!". You hear it in literally every big coaching search.
When Gene Chizik is fired, 1,000,000 mgopoints says Gruden will be linked there too
No need to wait for the axe, Aubie is already itching for Gruden. I didn't get a pic but one of the RVs at the Aub-UGA pre-game had a Chuckie doll in Auburn attire last Saturday. Crazy land.
Gruden is an NFL guy with an NFL ego. He's not gonna leave his A-list perch to take over a broken college team somewhere in Tennessee.
I work at UT and they are not getting Jon Gruden. He mentioned Eric Berry on air during a recent game and some of the local media took a run with it.
"For football unofficial visits during the fall of 2013, no complimentary tickets may be provided to visiting prospective student-athletes for the first two conference games of the season."
Those two conference games in Knoxville would be Georgia and South Carolina, so if I read this correctly, this is the humane portion of the punishment.
Although the report seems to indicate that the time intervals during which these violations took place overlap two coaching regimes, I wonder if this is at least one of the final nails in the Derek Dooley coffin at Tennessee regardless. To be fair, however, the Fulmer-Kiffin-Dooley Period Of Constant Transition a few years ago did not do this program any favors, but I don't know how patient Tennessee fans would be. They don't seem to be all that patient.
This just adds to their problems even more. Its already bad enough. They really dont have anything going for them right now. And I dont think Gruden will help either.
NCAA sanctions! Reroute!
I'll believe it when I see it!
How many time can I hear "so and so college did this or, so and so college did that, " and nothing ever happens!
Don't let the door hit you on the way out, Derek.
As for Gruden.......no. Don't see it.
Of course the NCAA is kicking UT while they're down. That is their MO. They never kick a program that isn't down. That is why programs like USC and Alabama come back from "punishments" to win National Championships as soon as they are eligible again, and why Ohio State may do exactly the same thing next year, while programs that don't have the resources to fight back, temporarily or otherwise, get nuked.
