OT: Undefeated Teams Mini-Playoff Mockup

Submitted by DoubleMs on

I was going to post this on a Dr. Saturday post, but their server kept screwing up, so I figured I would submit it here. This is just a hypothetical, but I would like to see what people think.

There will be anywhere between three (TCU, Boise, Florida/Bama) and five (TCU, Boise, Florida/Bama, Cincy, Texas) undefeated teams after next weekend. Since they are all undefeated, they theoretically are the only teams that qualify for consideration as a top team. Ideally, there would be a mini-playoff to determine which teams play in the NC. Won't happen, but hypothetically:

Three Teams: TCU/Boise would play in the first case, on Army/Navy weekend (Florida/Bama bye due to #1 rank) and the winner would play Florida/Bama in the NC game, as uncontested #2.

Four Teams: In the second case, where either Cincy or Texas lose, the playoff would be Florida/Bama vs Cincy/Texas, and TCU vs Boise, with the winners of the games meeting in the NC.

Five Teams: In the third case, they playoff would be by Strength of Schedule. Florida/Bama bye again due to #1 rank, Cincy vs Texas (as BCS) and TCU vs Boise (as non-BCS) play it out for BCS #2 and #3, respectively. Since there would still be two undefeated teams, the #2 and #3 would then play one last tiebreaker, leading to two undefeated teams in the NC game. Sure, it'd be two extra games for two teams, but it'd lead to a great NC game between two proven undefeated teams.

Of course, team-shuffling could occur, if TCU/Boise lose and Cincy/Texas both win then the four-team case would be divided differently.

Thoughts?

I would love to see it.

But, you're crazy for posting it seeing as how there will be no playoff system this year (or probably in the next five years, for that matter).

How about Michigan making a bowl game next year? Thoughts on that?

I think we've got a better shot at a playoff system ;)

Seriously though, I would be shocked if we don't make a bowl next year with all the talent we have returning on offense that will fit much better into the RR system. Plus a second year in GERG's defensive schemes will enable us to make huge strides on defense (despite the huge loss of Graham), along with guys coming in who can really fill the holes in our current defense (aside from the LBS...that is what worries me the most...how come we don't seem to be bringing in any blue chip LBs btw?). All the defense has to achieve is decency next year and I think the team can be in the top 3-4 in the Big Ten and lay the foundation for a big ten title run the next year.
