OT: UNC is Screwed

Submitted by AAB on

Yahoo! Sports has an article up linking John Blake and Marvin Austin to an agent, including hotel receipts for Austin with the agency's name on them.  I don't see how Blake's actions don't land UNC in "lack of institutional control" hell.

Unless your mom set the parental control feature, you should check out the Adult listings sometime - they typically cost a few bucks more than the Still In Theatres optios.  Which means you can generally tell what sort of "entertainment" was ordered up based on the hotel bill, even when the movie title isn't listed.

At least, that's what I heard - my expense reports will tell you nothing.  Nothing!

One time a staff member came to me as she was reviewing expense reports for some administrator.  She was concerned because there was a charge for "The Big Brassiere" on the hotel charge, and she sort of wondered what that was, perhaps an, ahem, movie of an adult nature.  Given the odd name.  Which, you know, is not something we would reimburse the person for.

And I was like "Oh that can't be right--they don't put the names of the adult movies on the checkout form."  Awkward pause.  "Or SO I AM TOLD"

Heh.  Anyway, the funny endnote is that I asked to actually see the receipt, and the charge was for the onsite restaurant which was called "The Big Brasserie" which the staff member mis-read.

SMU was the absolute WORST violator in the modern era. The NCAA's capitulation to SMU was disgusting.

The Mustangs were the worst of a horrible lot. Remember the NCAA broke up the old SWC. Players were paid, there was drug abuse, boosters were heavily involved in everything, academic fraud, and rumors of point-shaving. It was Miami during the Jimmy Johnson era times 20.

How did the NCAA capitulate? They basically destroyed SMU's program, which is now in the lowest tier of Div 1 (the Sunbelt conf, IIRC). Their program is only beginning to recover and receives virtually no attention, even within Dallas. I thought the word was the SMU's experience had actually scared the NCAA away from the death penalty after seeing how long term it's effects had been.

Blake resigned on Sept. 5, less than one month after a Yahoo! Sports report revealed his former position as an employee of Pro Tect.

I dont know how a university hires a coach with this kind of background. It just seems like a HUGE conflict of interest and would inevitably lead to problems for your program no matter how good of a person or coach he might be. Is this a common thing?

You mean to tell me that Butch Davis, the man whose name prompted this image on the first page of a Google image search, might not be on top of his program?  Shocking!

I doubt there will be a death penalty to UNC (the death penalty is more a deterrent than an option considering how it obliterated SMU), but I do expect Davis to be gone at the end of the year and for UNC to crater well into the 2010's.

UNC is so screwed. Just when everyone thought they were on the right track and going to be a great team, this comes out. Not good.

I'll take some of their good, non cheating players.

At the very least, John Blake is going on the SHALT NOT HIRE list.

Academic issues similar to what FSU went through (if less widespread), players getting paid by agents, coaches getting paid by agents.  I can't see in a million years how this is going to be less serious than USC, whose football program ultimately was punished for the actions of the one player.

They exist, don't they? Not much of a "death." And then the NCAA has basically apologized for going too far. Hell...how did Alabama not get it a few years ago for the Albert Means situation??

"Basically" apologized or "apologized".....which is it?

You really think that because the "death penalty" doesn't actually permanently destroy the program, it's too soft?  Really?  And what does Alabama have to do with this - are you saying that because Alabama didn't get the death penalty, SMU was let off the hook?  I don't know if you noticed, but "they exist" was about the best compliment you could've given SMU football these past 20 years.  Maybe you didn't notice, and you wouldn't have been alone, which is precisely the point.

UNC does, indeed, look screwed.  If I could pick one guy to poach from their commit list, it would be 4* OT Kiaro Holts.  Besides him and Marquise Williams, I don't know if anyone else was interested in Michigan.
