OT: UM Alum James Earl Jones to Appear on Big Bang Theory Tonight

Submitted by MGoVoldemort on

Like most of you, I'm a huge Big Bang theory fan so I thought others would be as excited as I am for James Earl Jones to be on the show tonight. With his Star Wars (Darth Vader) fame, I was hoping that he'd eventually be on the show, because the man is truly pretty damn funny. Go Blue!

Dads, Whitney, Dexter: S8, Two Broke Girls, 2.5 Men, etc. are irredeemable disasters, and i haven't touched reality programming

which isn't to say, it's good; it's mediocre-to-bad (Wolowitz, Shelden, the guest stars are usually funny enough, while Leonard/Amy Farrah-Fowler/Howard's mother are strong contenders for worst characters on TV)

BUT, it gets singled out in comments like these more than any other show, which is bizarre to me...is it because it gets such high ratings? is it because it gets unfairly compared to Community, which has a rabid following, but shaky ratings?

there are even weird double standards, like the laugh track stuff, for example...Seinfeld had a laugh track, and nobody really ever cared about it

minstrelsy by its very definition is a blatantly offensive representation of its subject

tons of 'nerds' enjoy tBBT just fine, and it's hard to see how the characters are being exploited, especially given (from what i've seen) they all are successful in their respective fields on the show and have relationships & other normal living stuff

must be a really SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW news day for something like this to make the board. Next we'll hear about a michigan fan making an cameo appearance on ESPN tonight during the game.

The Big Bang Theory is an awful sitcom that deserves to have all of its episodes locked into a space shuttle and shot into the sun. Double that for Two and a Half Men.

I was going to offer my opinion about a 30 minute television show, but I won't because if my opinion differs from those who like the show, they will obviously negbang me. So I'll just keep my thoughts on this blog where you share your opinions to myself.

because the opinions of those on the Blog are much more informed than those of the critics and the rest of the viewing public.  I'm not for or against this argument, but it is the #3 rated show in 2013.

Your point not withstanding...I mean...everyone has an opinion.  Seems to me that folks get negged just for differing ones, which is a shame.

...so I can't either knock it or praise it. I do know that my 87-year old grandmother is a HUGE fan, and never misses an episode...so....yeah. That doesn't really help me in the positive sense. ;-)

But hey, now's as good a time as any to give it a look -- JEJ is always worth watching.

While there are a lot of stupid, eye-rolling moments on TBBT, I still think it's worth checking out once in a while because the Sheldon character is a genuinely great creation.

I know this is setting the bar low, but it's probably the best major network laugh-track sitcom to come out since Seinfeld IMO.

TBBT was a funny show...in 2008. Unfortunately, their jokes, plot lines, acting or writing hasn't appreciably changed in five years. Which, I mean, hey, they're still highly rated, so enjoy the fun while it lasts, I guess. But I personally got really sick of just watching the same people in functionally the same plots exercise the same conflicts and make the same jokes as I was five years ago.

New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine are both quite a bit fresher and more relatable (And that's coming from someone who's a huge nerd).

I am not an avid watcher of the show, so maybe that is why I find it amusing. The same goes for Two and a Half Men. I think it is pretty darn funny at times, but not something that is a must watch.

Seems like the robust statistical sampling method this is MGoBlog has refuted your initial hypothesis.  I've watched this show exactly as many times as I've had sexual relations with a goat (once, and I equally regretted both incidents).

I do love me some JEJ, though.   My 2nd favorite fellow UM alum, right behind Zoltan Mesko.

Sorry...I guess I felt the need to be smarmy today.  It's probably a backhanded way of dealing with the heavy stuff making it to the board recently.   I honestly didn't mean to rile you up, but I guess it's healthy for me to get called an asshole every now and then. The sex-with-a-goat reference -while hilarious to me - probably wasn't the proper route to take.   I really don't hate the show with every fiber of my being...I just don't watch a lot of TV and am a little lacking in TV pop culture knowledge.  The one time I happened to catch 15 minutes of it, I just wasn't very impressed, so I was never compelled to watch the show again.

I guess what made a lot of us get all smarmy was your claim that "like most of you...blah blah".   Our collective assholishness can largely be blamed on being labeled fans of a show that we either hate or don't even watch.

But I agree the JEJ is kick ass.   He truly rocks.

I'm not a fan of CBS comedies, but Person of Interest is a great show and it is on CBS.  The only comedies I watch are Community, Parks and Rec and Brooklyn 99.  I have watched the big bang theory and thought it was ok, just not my cup of tea.

I'll be watching Michigna tonight anyway.

I'm glad I've found more brethren of the ilk that hate that show as much as I do.  How I Met Your Mother is another I hate: just terrible.

I don't care either way about the thread and/or those who like the show.  I mean no offense by my opinions.  Again, I'm just glad there's others out there with me as it seems many around me seem to actually enjoy it.

Yeah I am with you.  The only thing remotely funny about Big Bang is the dude who does Nic Cage impressions, but he's is only funny when doing said impression.  Something about laugh track comedies, I just can't get into them.  Seinfeld was brilliant but I absolutely hated Friends, and everyone loved friends back in the day.

Yep.  Definitely agree about the Laughtrack shit.  As somebody mentioned above, it really is bizarre that it's still utilized.  Funny thing, I know it's a bit blasphemous, but I never really liked Seinfeld all that much.  I didn't hate it but I sure didn't get into it...at all.  I love Curb Your Enthusiasm, however.  Anyway, I didn't not like Seinfeld for the "laugh" BS and at least back then it wasn't as odd as it is this day in age.

There's your problem right there. Not that I would insult anyone for there taste in comedy, but that show gets pretty mixed reviews from the type of crows Mgoblog attracts.

I'll be honest, I totally went through this whole thread and negged anyone who said anything good about The Big Bang Theory. It made me feel like a better person. Let's be honest, that show is terrible. It's worse than Hitler and Stalin combined.

is the blind assumption that most of us would be Big Bang Theory fans---in fact, huge fans.  A bit of a disconnect.  I just hope they don't laughtrack our beloved James Earle Jones.
