OT - UFC 143

I know the Hockey team is getting it in as we speak but is anyone watching UFC?  The last fight was tough with the 2 point deduction.  Any streams for the main events are appreciated.

This is probably a dumb question

But watching the old Tyson clips in the recruiting post, would he have been amazing in a UFC ring, without gloves it seems like he could kill someone, or would he have been terrible?

Well

I don't know how he wrestles but I will say something that Joe Rogan said earlier in the broadcast about elite athletes and focus:

Basically, if Tyson had the focus to become a great boxer, he could have learned to be a great wrestler too.

But if you're talking about Tyson out of the box, I don't think it would have went well I don't see many boxers going far or even getting into MMA which is a shame because I love boxing.

One thing though, I think elite athletes didn't opt for kickboxing or muy thai as much as they do now.  That's when boxing was the focus.  Now that MMA has eclipsed boxing, I think we will see more elite athletes (i.e. the Tysons of the world) in MMA.

Don't think he would be amazing

unless he had the other skills necessary in UFC. Not sure that he would have the ground skills or kickboxing. Look at how well James Toney did against Randy Couture back in 2010. A boxer tried entering the UFC and got submitted.

EDIT: I agree with the post above though. Given Tyson's athletic ability and if he did focus on being an MMA fighter back in the day he could have possibly been a good fighter in the UFC. However starting as a boxer and then trying to become an MMA fighter is very difficult in trying to learn all of the other skills to be a well-rounded fighter.

Why do you say that?  I used to think the guy was a dick until the Ultimate Fighter season where he coached against GSP he seemed like a good guy then.

I thought he was when he was a fighter on The Ultimate Fighter but I haven't heard him since he was a coach there.  I can see one getting that impression though lol.

Koz is a lot like Chael

Koz is a lot like Chael Sonnen.  They love playing the bad guy.  You can't argue the guy comes to fight and usually puts on a hell of a show. Tonight you had two elite wrestlers, not a surprise it wasn't as much action as most would think.

Chael is the man by the way.

Dana hates him?  That's news

Dana hates him?  That's news to me...  He was only bitching about Roy because he thought he had talent, but never really took MMA seriously because of the shape he was in.

And I don't know how you came to the conclusion that he would be a Buckeye fan.  Roy is actually one of the nicest and most humble guys in MMA.  He doesn't make excuses when he loses, and he's actually trying to take his weight issue serious now.  That doesn't seem like a typical Buckeye fan to me...

Hate is a strong

word but he was pissed after a few of his early wins when he grabs his stomach and says stupid things like fat guys can win, or get me some cheeseburgers. That stuff got under Dana's skin for sure.

heh.

I think the lesson here is that GSP would destroy either one of these fighters with relative ease. One look at the Rory MacDonald/Nate Diaz beating would indicate what would happen for Nick Diaz versus GSP. He should be happy he didn't win so that wouldn't happen to him, also.

Nick Diaz is like a child. Honestly, it's too bad he didn't win so I could watch GSP take him down and grind him out over five rounds. I'm sure he'd complain about that, also.

No offense, I know you

No offense, I know you Canadians love you some GSP, but he is by far the most boring fighter next to Jon Fitch.  I can't stand the fact that Silva got heat for not finishing 2 fights from Dana, yet GSP hasn't finished a fight in his last 5 out of 6 fights and Dana doesn't say a word about it.  The only fight he did "finish" was when Penn's corner threw in the towel at the end of the 4th because they knew he wasn't going to win.

meh.

First point: GSP beats Condit. All day, every day.

Second point: GSP doesn't get heat from Dana because he doesn't "clown" his opponents like Silva (or generally act like a donkey...see Silva v. Maia).

All GSP does is win. Look at who he has fought vs. who Silva has been fighting and you'll see why he finishes less (of late).

Actually, one of the main

Actually, one of the main areas the fighters are scored on is octagon control.  Diaz completely dominated the octagon.  Condit obviously landed more strikes, but it's not like he dominated the fight.  Honestly, this fight could have gone either way.

Nick always wanted to go into boxing, but Dana promised him a fight with GSP, in which he has now screwed up twice.  Not showing up to promos, and not winning a fight.  It's his own fault he didn't get his wish.  I'm glad Condit won.  Nick always gets his way, and when he doesn't, he takes his ball and goes home.  Shame too, because he's really talented.  If he could screw his head on straight he'd be one of the best.

not so much on the Diaz domination...

the criteria for scoring relates to "effective aggression".

Walking the guy down and throwing at air does not equal Octagon control when the other guy slips you and then kicks you in the leg a bunch of times or hits you in the face. Which is what happened over, and over and over again. Diaz *might* have considered adjusting to this reality around, say, round 2.

Straight from the UFC

Straight from the UFC website:

"J. Octagon Control 1. The fighter who is dictating the pace, place and position of the fight."

I'm pretty sure Diaz dictated the pace, place, and position pretty much the entire fight, if not the whole fight.

so here's what really happened.

Calm down Nick Diaz fanboy. Just be happy he didn't win so GSP wouldn't beat him up worse than tonight.

The fight metric is just too clear.

Listen, Nate Diaz is fighting in May; you'll feel better by then.

Nate DIaz is a punk, he was

Nate DIaz is a punk, he was beat soundly.  He couldn't muster a sustained attack and Condit executed the perfect game plan against him.

hmmmmm...that Nick Diaz is quite the immature idiot.

Nick Diaz clearly lost the fight...I had it 48-47 Condit which is a bit closer than the judges scored it. So now he's quitting. It's interesting, I figured him for a gutless loser of that nature.

Diaz

Not sure how you can win a fight back peddling the entire time? Please explain that one to me. Diaz hands down won 2 of the first 3 rounds you pick because I actually had him taking all of them, and for sure taking 5. Condit is going to be murdered by GSP. Good luck to him, his time is coming. If I was Diaz I'd retire as well, after being robbed.

Diaz

may have been pressing forward more, and thus had a huge advantage in octagon control, however how many even decent strikes did he land? He can't expect to win without landing any real punches. Nothing wrong with counter striking and evading and basically avoiding taking any damage over the entire five rounds.

I know Diaz complained about the wimpy leg kicks, but those score in the eyes of the judges. At the end of the day, look at the faces of the fighters and 9/10 times you'll get the winner, as happened in this fight.

As they say, never leave it

As they say, never leave it in the hands of the judges.  Nick should have locked down that arm bar he was so confident on having to end the fight.  Explain to me if you're so confident in having a submission only to say you didn't lock it on because you thought you were winning.  Especially when they usually get bonuses for finishing the fight, plus an opportunity at submission of the night that's an extra $75,000 or whatever.

In the post fight interview

In the post fight interview they asked Condit what Diaz was saying during the fight.  Condit said when he had a bit of blood trickle down from his nose, Diaz said, "Why you bleeding?"  Condit also recalls after he landed a spinning back fist, Diaz said, "Were doing spinning shit now?"  Kind of funny if you know anything about Diaz as a person.
