OT: Two Syracuse Sophomores Transferring
Title says it all. Both players — B.J. Johnson and Ron Patterson — would have to sit out a year.
This is especially relevant because Patterson is a former Indiana commit and is presumably looking to return to Big Ten country.
Patterson's AAU coach, Chris Hawkins, said the Indianapolis native would possibly look to move to a school closer to home.Patterson originally signed with Indiana out of high school, but decided to do a post-grad year at Brewster Academy (N.H.) before heading to Syracuse.

Indiana can have Patterson. As a SO guard he played 13 minutes a game and shot a sterling 31%. 17% from 3 pt area.

Ain't no way he's going back to Indiana. There was some funny business with his enrollment and he pretty much got screwed. If I remember correctly he showed up enrolled and then took a summer class (or classes) "didn't do well enough" and wasn't given a scholarship. I'm sure it was purely coincidental that Indiana was over the scholarship limit by 1 at the time too.
Anyway, I remember reading about it and that's the outline of the story.

No way Patterson is headed back to IU. He departed on a really sour note during one of their scholarship crunch periods. It was claimed that he didn't meet academic eligibility requirements after his summer classes but I'm not sure how true that was. He was actually the type of guy that Crean typically helps turn into a productive player so it was a head scratcher at the time. He's a D and energy guy. Not a shooter.

The Orange can only use 10 scholarships per year for a four-year period. Prior to the transfers, Syracuse had 11 players scheduled to be under scholarship in the 2016-17 season. The departures of Johnson and Patterson now could enable the Orange to recruit another player in the current junior class.
I had almost forgotten abut the scholarship reductions but it is interesting that these transfers resolve what may have been a scholarship math problem otherwise. I do wonder if there might be further turnover on the team depending on how things begin to unfold during their period of restrictions / punishments.

It'd be great if Boeheim had to coach 3 years of NIT caliber ball before his retirement. Fuck him.

Yes, they'd bottom out --- but they could follow the IU hoops path. Bad teams for a couple years then build back up to Top 25 caliber teams. And everything would be completely fresh.
Boeheim's ego seems like it would never allow such a thing. I guess they'll just tread water and go 17-14 and play in the NIT for 3 years. Oh well.

He has to have a pretty decent coaching tree established by now, right? I would think that would be a great job, probably a top ten job for college basketball coaches. Every game he continues to coach seems like more of an embarassment.

It's been pretty brutal. Syracuse went to the Final Four two years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if that's where Smart ends up (or at IU after Crean gets canned).
