OT: Twin Peaks Returns

Submitted by Qmatic on
One of the most original TV series has returned; this time to Showtime. Any thoughts on the return so far? I have been sipping some damn fine coffee during it.

Vintage Lynch but has a bit different atmosphere from his older seasons. Seems like this is flying a bit under the radar as far as hype is concerned. I'm definitely enjoying it so far.

I loved this two part premiere. Why I found the most interesting is how Lynch balanced incorporating the old feel and also new aspects of it. When it was set in TP it felt like 90/91, but the new scenes in different setting had a different feel but still same connection to the Lynchian bizarre universe he creates.

Biggest question for me: What the heck is ol' Doc Jacoby doing with all those shovels? Is this what life looks like when you give up your swinging, wired-for-sound hula pad?

I am interested in this show, but never saw the first manifestation in the 90s. Do you all recommend watching the old seasons first, or does it matter (first or later)?

Yes, you will absolutely need to watch the first series, as well as the "prequel" film Fire Walk With Me. There's no way you would understand anything of what's going on without knowing the original series.

At the very least, you could watch the first season, the beginning of the second, then skip to the last five episodes or so. The second season was notoriously bad, the show got cancelled, and Lynch came back for the finale to tie up the loose ends. This is where the entire premise for the new series is laid out, without spoiling anything.

In the end, it's only 30 episodes, so it wouldn't take you a very long time if you wanted to commit. Just stay spoiler-free, the reveals are the best part of the show.

You should most definitely watch the original first. It's really really good. Lynch had patience to lay the groundwork for some horrifying shit, and then delivered in his own way.

If you do watch the original, note how much attention the production gave to common passages throughout the whole series. All the various hallways are almost characters in the show. It's a successful attempt at something unique even without any context, and then the context finally arrives in the end.

Very Lynch-like in the interspersing of bizarre, seemingly unrelated elements. I guess I'm going to have to watch it again.

Speaking of arty made-for-TV work, the Amazon series I Love Dick is really, really good.

I'll see you again in 25 years...  and here we are!  I will probably start watching after Fargo, which is easily my favorite show currently on air.
