OT: TV Revenues
So having a discussion with some friends today, the topic of ND joining a conference came up. The discussion hinged on the TV revenue and why should ND give up their share of the pie?
I quoted the difference between what ALL the BIG teams get (roughly $21mill I think) vs a rumoured $15mill for ND.
They rebutted with if ND joined a conference they would lose money they would get from ABC/ESPN away games lose money from visiting other stadiums and lose money on bowl games.
Does anyone with knowledge know how the money flows? That $21mill the BIG gets is strictly BIGNet? How much more do you get from ESPN/ABC. Do you get a % as away team, etc etc. Factor in bowl revenue. Say on average 2 BIG teams make the BCS (which has been the case in recent history) thats almost another $2mill per BCS team.
Can anyone shine some light on some concrete BIG figures for me?
Well the "bowl game revenue" point is moot because they can only get money from bowl games when they play in them.
ZZZZING!!!
As Swarbrick laughs cashing his $1.3million BCS check every year, regardless of making a bowl or not.
holy shit that's a real thing? I haven't heard of anyone getting paid so handsomely regardless of outcomes since Barry Zito!
and you'll say the same about a 300lb Prince Fielder
I'd give you some kind of bump for that, but I don't seem to have access to moderate accordingly, don't know why.
But is that more than the Big Ten teams get? In order for each Big Ten team to get 1.3mil, they'd only need to rake in 15.6mil as a conference, which they do easily. Now, is that 1.3 in addition to whatever bowl revenue they get from playing in the Armed Forces Bowl?
If you say 2 BIG teams in the BCS (I round to $20mill per game) you'd get $40mill and toss in $10mill just as a round number. $50mill/12 == $4.1.
ND doesn't even have to play in a bowl game and gets $1.3Mill. Any bowl game is on top of that figure I believe.

Still not sure how ND pulls money in, say, playing at Michigan via TV.
From what I understand, Michigan doesn't get paid when they play at ND and vice versa.
IIRC, ND cooked its own goose. When they began playing Michigan, ND insisted on "home takes all the gate receipts." At the time, ND felt this was preferable. Eventually, ND realized that Michigan was making more because of this arrangement, but by that time, the contract was set in stone, and it apparently hasn't changed since. So Michigan actually does particularly well financially in the home and home arrangement with ND.

This is for revenue sports in general, but the Big Ten teams will pull in anywhere from $19.7 to $22 million a year, which is actually the one of the more lucrative arrangements if we are confining this strictly to TV revenue across multiple network contracts (the figure includes all major TV contracts - BTN, ESPN, etc...).
If ND decided to join the Big Ten, for example, I imagine that the contracts are reopened and negotiated yet again (see SEC additions for how that works), but it seems to me that the precedent is that conferences and teams end up the better for it, depending on who is joining.
If you are suggesting that ND join the Big Ten based solely on potential TV revenue, you might actually have a intriguing point. NBC alone cannot hope to match some of the other parties involved.
The $21 million per team in the B10 includes everything - BTN and ABC/ESPN.
