Do those

Do those stats include postseason? He'll obliterate the record if so.

They do

If you click on the player name it brings you to their Sports-Reference page and you'll see that for example, John Wall amassed his 149 turnovers in 37 games, indicating it includes postseason.

So yeah, Trae Young is going to put some distance between himself and second place at this rate.

I actually did not notice that in my original post - good catch.  Yeah, he is going to obliterate the TO record.

He will fit into today’s NBA

He will fit into today’s NBA very well. Extremely high volume player. He could put up quadruple doubles some games if you include TO’s.

He’s obviously very talented still and his teammates rely on him to do everything. You can’t expect a college freshman to put up his numbers without a high amount of TOs.

This leaderboard is patently false

I distinctly remember Brandon Hughes having over 700 turnovers for Michigan in the 1996-97 season.

I don't....

understand what the obsession is with this guy and turnovers!? He is literally the best player on his team and it's not even close. I don't even think the turnovers tarnish his ability to win National POY either. Vasquez and Lee won Conference Player of the Year awards in their tenures at their respective universities. Wall is an NBA All-Star. McKnight is sitting out this year, but is eligible to play two more years at Seton Hall and I'm guessing was the best player on Sacred Heart while he was there. Galloway is done, but he did play ball at USC and Kentucky before playing at Texas Southern, my guess was that he was the best player on that team as well. I guess I'm struggling to understand why this was posted if there wasn't going to be any added discussion to why this matters? Also, the title is super click-bait.

Obsession with Turnovers?

Obsession with Turnovers? They are an extremely important statistic.  You should have a conversation with JB some time in regards to the importance of turning the ball over at Subway.  I cannot tell you how many more losses JB would have on his resume if he did not value the ball.

But yeah, if you value high turnovers or just do not want to include them when evaluating a player, to each their own i guess.  You probably do not look inlclude missed shots in your evaluations either?  Because honestly, those are not at bad as turnovers.

Yes, TO are an extremely

Yes, TO are an extremely important statistic. But there is context here. In an offense like JB's with a slow-pace, that many TO would be apalling. But in Oklahoma's offense, he is asked to run a fast-paced offense by using up a ton of volume thanks to the teammates around him. He's bound to have a ton of turnovers in part because of the amount of opportunities to have them.

He has flaws and things to fix, but he is having a great season and has proven to be a big time shot maker and play maker.

More Context

According to Torvik, Young is in the 54th percentile in terms of turnovers per 100 possesions, so he's pretty average when you factor in usage.

You're lazy, OP!

Yeah except that the higher

Yeah except that the higher your usage goes the less effective and more attentino you get. The guy is sometimes getting double teamed the second he crosses half-court, and I'm not talking a press, it's like how we double on posts, opposing coaches are just that scared of him. Oh and he's a freshman and he's still shooting 38.5% on all his steph curry long range step back 3 point jacks.

Also, no one is JB's offense

Also, no one is JB's offense has the ball their hands as often as Young does.

I wanted to be a pessimist about his ability, but I have watched probably 3-4 games of his (because they are on ESPN at least once a week), and he seems like the real deal. He may get out of control from time to time, but it is rare. He is very quick and gets to the basket at will. Because he is little he still has to take tough shots at the rim, which he is still incredibly efficicent at. I don't know how many times I have seen him throw up some random bullshit shot from 30+ feet where I scoff and shake my head, only to see it drop and have the net barely move. And I can't blame him,  he shoots almost 40% from 3 and that obviously includes all the end of the shot clock prayers he has to throw up. Add in his passing ability and this kid is so much of an offensive stud that he could break the TO record by a hundred and he would still be worth it.

His defense is certainly lacking and you can tell that it is an even mixture between not being big/strong enough to cope with certain players and not putting his energy into that end of the floor. Regardless, if Mr. Young wants to forego his NBA career and transfer to Michigan instead, I think we could find a spot for him.

Agree

Young’s TO margin is essentially a function of his usage x freshman x pg. Not that interesting when you look at it that way.

I don't get people who hate

I don't get people who hate Trae Young. Oklahoma is a bad team that he is carrying to relevance and a bunch of great wins. Ya, ESPN can get exhausting, but he isn't asking them too. He is the best player in the college game right now and it is not that close.

He's shooting 40% from three

He's shooting 40% from three and his average three-point attempt is from way beyond the NBA 3-point line. He's an incredibly good basketball player for a 19-year-old. People who hate on Trae Young have to be the most insufferable, miserable sports fans out there.

I agree the hate is overblown

Some of the shots he takes are just bad, though.  The 30-footers with a guy in his grill go in, what, 25% of the time?  I guess it's useful if a teammate can get the board since long rebounds often favor the offense.  So if he's sometimes going for the Kobe assist then okay, but if he truly believes that's the best shot his team can get off in a possession, I can't agree with that.

His ability to get in the lane and finish at the rim is phenomenal, not to mention if he gets fouled it's basically automatic that he'll make the free throw(s).

25%?

If he can hit contested 30-footers at 25%, that is actually pretty impressive.

With his usage, if he wasn’t

With his usage, if he wasn’t turning the ball over more than most people I’d be more alarmed than i am now. Kid can play and in most situations won’t be asked to be Superman.

He's on pace for the 3rd highest

Usage season ever too (38.5%), which helps explain the turnover item, partially.  If we just look Power 5, he's going to crush it (TJ Warren, NC State 13-14, 35.5%).  Sports-Reference only tracks Usage back to 09-10, so that's relevant too.

You can knock him for the turnovers but at least mention the fact he’s leading the NCAA in scoring and assists. Certainly he takes a lot of ill advised shots, but he is fun to watch and gets his teammates involved.

Trae Young is a great player and the future archetype for a new type of long distance shooter who can shoot it from anywhere on the court with accuracy...That being said I didnt realize he turned it over so much. Maybe because ESPN is beating the Trae= Curry drum.

BTW, I slow mo video captured him on my phone in a 3 step travel in the game the other day...Blatant yet uncalled because it was on the fast break. I really wish refs would have the gumption to make the calls that need to be made even if it means disrupting the play or going against the home crowd.

Because ever since the LeBron/DWade crab dribbling era of basketball began, the 5 step travel and other egregious ones like the one i saw have become commonplace.

That's why I love Beilein teams so much. Fundamentals and respect for the game (cue Futurama WNBA meme/reference)

I’m with you but Mo Wagner

I’m with you but Mo Wagner takes 3 steps pretty often when he gets the ball around the arc and drives. I’ve noticed it after his around-the-back move when he gathers the ball a number of times this season.

Trae is the man!

Most exciting player to come along in many years. I started watching him a few weeks ago and now make sure I either watch live or DVR his games.  He is a throwback to a time in the sixties and seventies when great players could have the ball in their hand every possession and the coaches didn't feel a need to control everything.  They would make mistakes but put up big numbers.  He is an extremely talented guy.

The turnovers are misleading because in the last six games that I have watched, I would say about half of the turnovers are because he has such great vision that his teammates aren't ready for his passes or aren't where they are supposed to be.  Magic had this problem when he was a freshman.  He would come down the court, rifle a pass to a spot and the teammate either wasn't there or couldn't handle the pass.  By the end of that year and especially, by his sophomore year, they were there when that ball arrived.

I hope Oklahoma makes the tournament because their games will be must see TV.  They can beat anyone with Trae at the helm.

And BTW...

If you watched his games, you will see that ESPN not only carries a running total of his points and assists above the score but also his turnovers.  So ESPN is not trying to cover that up.

OP - to be fair,

You should also mention his assists and points per game.

He is a really fun player to watch!

It has not been an especially

It has not been an especially exciting year in NCAA-M (outside of Michigan games, which are for me are almost always hard to watch in places but are still must-see-TV).

I'd watch that dude play 1-on-5, and watch some TO, steal, dunk, steal, TO, steal, off-balance-three sequencs.

I wouldn’t draft

this kid top 10.

He plays awful defense and is a turnover machine. I suspect hell be an average pro.
