OT- A tradition unlike any other - Open Thread

I think your winner comes from the 1:59 tee time today.  Garcia, Fowler, and Day.  One of these guys is going to get a major soon, and it is kind of crazy that none of them have closed the deal yet.  Sergio has been hovering at Augusta lately, right there, just can't quite make the push.  I think he takes it this weekend.

It must be just a coincidence that Tiger is teeing off just as ESPN begins coverage.  I don't see that being intentional at all.../s.

I really wish the entire tournament was on TV because I would watch literally every minute. I am hoping Rickie wins it (he is my favorite player), but predict Jordan Spieth to win. Rickie was so close last year in all four majors; he is due for one this year.

they now show the leaders playing their entire round on Saturday and Sunday.  Remember when it used to come on at like 3:30 on Sunday.  You only got to see the leaders on the back nine. That was ridiculous.

It is very hard for up and comers to win the Masters as their first major when they have not been in the mix for very long.  Rory was a perfect example a few years back when he shot like 93 on Sunday.  I think Spieth will be in the mix but I don't see him winning it.

Yeah, that 3:30 start time on Sunday was fucking pathetic. I'm unsure, but didn't coverage on days one and two stop at 6:00 in years past? Today it ends at 7:30, which is great. I'm really glad for that today because I can see Rickie, Jason, and Tiger play most of their round. Obviously that will change tomorrow when the tee times are reversed, but tomorrow I can see most of Rory's round. I just hate the TV coverage, especially when you compare it to the US Open. There is a TON of TV coverage for the US Open, which is great since it's a major, but it isn't the Masters.

National is really particular about how the tournament is covered.  And yes, it used to be on USA from 4:00 to 6:00 on Thursday and Friday.  Like in 97, Tiger shot 30 on the back nine in what is still one of the highlights of his career.  I think we got to see through the 12th hole and that was all.

I totally understand how the people in charge want it covered, but I'm here to tell them that their attitude towards it is ridiculous and out dated. I know they added the streams and radio coverage starts at 2:00, but that just isn't good enough for me and many people. I'd take off days one and two every year to watch the the tournament those days if the entire rounds were on TV or at least online.

about Sergio but maybe he just doesn't have what it takes to win a major.  It's always interesting to see the interplay between the old guys and the young guys.

Their coverage is linked with the feature group both days I think. Love him or hate him Tiger is still the main draw in golf. Then tomorrow Im guessing coverage should be linked with the Mickelson and Rory grouping.

I love Tiger's demise. He is/was a juicing cheater. He gave up the juice and he has floundered. He should be co suffered the Barry Bonds of baseball. So glad that Jack's record will not be lost to a guy like him.

I am calling Justin Spieth this weekend.

conclusion that Jack's record in no longer in jeapordy is misguided my friend.  Tiger has 7 years of golf before the age when Jack won his last major.  The book is not closed on that yet.

And call me a damn fool if you want, most people do, but I don't buy the juicing narrative.

Agree. No mount of juicing can make you hot the ball with the finesse required on these courses, or improve the short game where most of the strokes are lost anyways. He may have been juicing at some point but it didn't really matter

Disagree. When Tiger was going through his dominant phase in the late 90s and early 00s, he was hitting the ball 20-30 yards further than everyone else. There's a reason they called lengthening the courses "Tiger proofing." And for guys at that level, the difference between a wedge and a 7-8 iron into the greens is huge.

is value in scrambling my friend. Tiger is a mess right now and he is about to get back to even. The competency in his short game is the story today. He is running a marathon not a sprint man. As for roids, your tiger and bonds comparisons are not persuasive. Steroids DO NOT help a golfer with the things Tiger improved in his best years. He was always long as fuck. It was not his length that improved! He became the best putter and short game player in the world. These things have nothing to do with size and strength. It is you who will not look at things impartially.

Also, HGH never help with bat speed and eye hand coordination, either. Those are two things critical to a great hitter in baseball. Did the juice help Bonds stay healthy and add an ounce of pop to his bat? Yep. Has Tiger hit as long or stayed healthy the last 7-8 years.......your conclusion to draw.

would agree that HGH would not help Tiger with the parts of his game that he most improved during his period of dominance.  Now that we got that settled, Tiger Woods was never lacking for "pop" in his swing.  Nobody who has ever played the game professionally struck the ball any better than Tiger Woods in his prime(which began essentially when you see him in old videos in the straw hats at the US Ams).

Neither has any golfer in history swung with a more violent action through impact while keep both feet glued to the ground to generate tork.  And you believe that HGH and subsequent cessation of such drugs is the only possible reason for Tiger's injuries?  I got an idea, go take a shovel and go slam it into the ground 500 times per day.  See how long it takes before you have knee and back trouble.

always a business or charity thing.  I don't mind the game, but I always feel like I'm walking around outside in a manicured place with golf clubs when I could be walking around in a natural place with a fly rod.  That said, I enjoyed watching the majors when Tiger was good.  I'm not sure what made him such compelling television, but it really was.  Now, I'm back to not caring very much.  Enjoy the show for those interested.

not disagree more about the feeling that I have when I am on a golf course.  I love being on a golf course, I love the way a golf course smells in the morning for god's sake.

The business or charity thing is part of the problem for you I think.  The best golf is played 15 minutes after sun rise with a friend or two.  Switch from coffee to gatorade at the turn and save the beer for the clubhouse.

I have golfed maybe five times in my entire life, but watch a ton of it (weird, I know). I, too, love being on a golf course. There is just something peaceful about it. Maybe it's the quiet - I don't really know, but it's great.

LOL

Speaking of ponds - the first time I ever played golf, I was hitting my second shot over a pond, but the shot was so bad and low that it skipped across the pond and landed in the fairway somehow. The pond wasn't large - maybe thirty feet across, but it was hilarious.

wound up engaged in different activities.  I do agree with the "business/charity" comment.  I'm always 4 or 5 beers in by the 18th hole and it's really difficult to care about the game at that point.  I probably haven't given it a fair shot.  Cheers.

but I also highly recommend starting the round with a bloody mary (or something in your coffee).  An early round can always use a little swing oil.

A refill at the turn and then keep it going after the round.  You can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning.

Garcia, I will believe it when I see it.  He's been an outright dick in the past on multiple occasions, but having him in contention on Sunday for a Master's would add a lot of drama.  If he didn't choke it would be an even bigger story, and I'd root for the player's potential to finally be realized, if not the player himself.  Golf would be more interesting if Garcia could actually turn it on and be a threat at the majors.

I'd love to see Sergio win. I know most people don't care for him and that's fine but he's had so many close calls. It would be nice to see him finally pull through.
