OT - Tracy McGrady to try baseball

Submitted by Cold War on

Tracy McGrady wants to follow Michael Jordan's path to the national pastime.

The retired seven-time NBA All-Star is aiming to become a baseball player, and plans to try pitching for the Sugar Land Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League. That's the same team that Roger Clemens pitched for a couple of years ago.

Jordan famously played in the Chicago White Sox organization in 1994 during his first retirement from basketball, reaching the Double-A level.

A statement from the Skeeters says that it is a "lifelong dream" of McGrady's to play baseball.

When mj was ever one of the greatest baseball players in the planet. It is easy to forget because of the injuries, but Tracy was unreal in his prime. Basically Durant before there was durant.

To me, inverted means either upside down or in the opposite order. Since neither of those applies in this situation, I interpreted it as a dig at Tracy, given the whole "if he is successful" thing.

Maybe I misinterpreted. Either way, McGrath was damn good at basketball. That's my only point.

I'm always amazed at athletes than can reasonably succeed at two different professional sports. In fact, I find it straight up incredible that a person can be so talented. Best of luck to him on his baseball career!

NBC Sports has a few select Tweets about McGrady's progress here - LINK

According to this, he's been working out for about two months or so and already has been able to pitch at over 90 MPH, which on its face seems pretty good. I must admit, watching a Skeeters game would be an interesting affair with McGrady on the mound. Actually, it would be rather fun if it worked out somehow.

I remember reading an article on Tmac and Kobe and their career trajectories. It have some hypotheticals about whether he could have matched Kobe if he stayed healthy. Crazy talent and athleticism, even more evident that he can switch to baseball and throw 90 plus.

He didn't so much "reach" the AA level as they just put him there. He probably shouldn't have even been that high. He was around the Mendoza line that season.
