I can't think of one other reason for the movie to have been made, except of course boobies.

Kubrick was bizarre.  2001 - meh; Clockwork Orange - WTF?!?; Full Metal Jacket -brilliant and undesevingly maligned.  2001 as "the best movie ever made" people are very odd to me.  I just don't see it.

No no no no no! 2001 was one of the great films of all time. That film was made in 1969 fergodsakes! The visuals even today are still brilliantly fresh. Kubrick was decades ahead of his time. There's an odd plastic sheen to the characters, I'll give you that...

Personally, my favorite is The Shining, with a nod to Dr. Strangelove.

Orange defies classification as "good" or "bad," "fantastically awesome" or "utterly ridiculous.  it is the only movie that I have ever seen that really defies description.  It is a product of (and a depiction of) pure insanity, to the extent that I cannot even seperate where the production ends and the depiction begins. I can't say it is "good," I can't say it is "bad."  All I can truly say, again, is WTF!?!

It's been a while since I've seen it but wasn't Tom an MD? I thought it was neat how an MD is typically high status community leader anywhere else in America, but he was treated like a peasant by that circle. Or am I completely misremembering?

Are you saying EWS was a really bad movie in comparison to Kubrick's other films, or a really bad movie in comparison to all films.

Because, if the latter, I'd have to greatly disagree.  Tom Cruise's and Nicole Kidman's performances alone makes it a film worth watching.

it is all smoke and mirrors.  It is glossy and exotic and some of the cinematography is pretty cool in the LSD sense, but it is ultimately devoid of any meaning and pretentous to a nauseating degree.  It is bad art-house porn, you can catch a better version Eyes Wide Shut any night after midnight on Sundance(or in episode 6 of True Detective-Season 2)

It has seen a resurgence in critical acclaim recently but only because of his death.  Just as The Crow was interesting for a decade because ot Lee's death so too has EWS held some lasting intrigue, but it is a 2 star movie and that is being generous.

You should read the grantland article about the movie. The dynamic Kubrick setup between his characters was magical. Cruise and Kidman basically got divorced afterward because of the tension Kubrick created between his leading characters.

pretty good article.  I don't think it makes the movie any better though.  For all that "manipulation" that Kubrick utilized, none of that apparent conflict came through on screen to me.

And "Cruise never did a movie with sexual themes again" right after the author references Magnolia!?  Has the author scene Cruise's scenes in Magnolia?  Better yet, has he seen any of Magnolia?  Sex as exploitation is one of the primary themes of the movie.

Every college and university "partys", especially those with a significant Greek scene. I think the type of partying that is actually being ranked on this list is the former you mention - the middle to upper class kids overtly and mindlessly binge-drinking, blaring loud music, beer bonging, beer ponging, type of parties that occur at large houses/ yards and large bars typical of big public universties.  The type of partying you see in college movies like "Accepted", "Neighbors" and "Old School". Of course there's a lot of cocaine at these type of parties as well.

U of I has become VERY selective regarding in-state candidates and really like receiving out-of-state tuition. Hence, more suburban Chicagoan's attend Iowa as there is no other public school in Illinois of note. Iowa is to MSU as U of I is to, well...not really but you get the point. Plus, Urbana is a hole.

This was definitely my experience as well, going back to 2008. I knew a couple kids that went to their prestige programs (engineering and accounting) but most that got into UofI's more selective schools ended up at Wisconsin, Northwestern or headed east.

Meanwhile, damn near all of the partiers ended up at Iowa or were stuck at NIU.

For reference, UPenn was ranked the top party school recently by Playboy.. The rankings are all BS, but fun to argue over.

I was at Iowa this fall, and it's going to sound ridiculous, but the talent at that school was unbelievable. We were at the Rec Center, and 9/10 girls were absolutely beautiful. Completely shocking. With that being said the campus was completely dead when we tried to go out that night, soooooo I'm thinking theyre not the number 2 party school out there
