OT - Tony Gonzalez in, Dan Marino and Shannon Sharpe out at CBS

Submitted by Cold War on

Any thought that Tony Gonzalez might change his mind about retirement (again) can probably put to rest, as Gonzalez has a high-profile new job: CBS has announced that Gonzalez is joining its pregame show.

As part of the same announcement, CBS said Dan Marino and Shannon Sharpe will no longer appear on The NFL Today. The new cast of the show will be James Brown, Bill Cowher, Boomer Esiason and Gonzalez.

Sharpe was the worst pre-game personality at a major network, IMO. What he said was pretty stupid, when you could understand him. Marino was very meh, no loss there.

Big Marino fan (player, mostly).  He had an affair, which isn't cool, but oh well, not my business.  He seems to have done good things, though, especially for handicapped children.  I guess it's not that big of a deal though in regards to "show", he wasn't exactly a polarizing figure and didn't seem to give the knowledge of the game he's chock full of.  He was pretty meh.  Shannon was a bit of an ass but I kind of liked him.

CBS Sports Executive: "Mr Sharp, thank you for all you've done these past few years. However, your services are no longer required."
Shannon Sharp: "ABADA BADIBA DABADIB ADADA BIDANED BIDEA!"
CBS Sports Executive: "Yes. Yes, it is because nobody can understand you."

Tony Gonzalez always seemed like a rather well-spoken guy and could potentially flourish as an analyst. As CBS said basically, he's a fresh face and will bring some fresh insights, I would think. I see that as an upgrade to their coverage. It's a radical change for them, but I think it is a good one.

Shannon Sharpe....I don't know, I was just not a fan of the style. As for Marino, there's already a rumor floating around about him rejoining the Dolphins in some capacity, or at least the Miami Herald simply wants Marino back. It's one of these.

I find the pre-game shows pointless, full of old news and fake laughter to dumb jokes. Couldn't one of the networks try something a little creative instead of the same old, tired pre-game show?

Tony Gonzalez was pissed that Atlanta did not trade him at the deadline this year to a contender.

Patriots?  Seriously that would have been a perfect match.  One that could have saved the Super Bowl too.

Is the dumbest motherfucker I've ever heard call an NFL game. Try to find video of him watching clear evidence that a call should be overturned, then jabbering for two minutes about how you still need to see the play in 'bang-bang time' to make a conclusion. I hate it when a game I want to watch is on CBS.

Shannon Sharpe on CBS a lot. He always said it like it was and he always has the players ear. He wasn't afraid to say what really happens or what the players are really thinking. Gonzales I'm sure will be a puppet like Sims is.

They could replace Shannon Sharpe with a Horse and the over-70, white viewers wouldn't have noticed any difference.
