OT: Today is full of fail

Submitted by Dark Blue on

Today I watched the Wings lose in OT, The Tigers lose in the bottom of the 9th on a Ryan Perry wild pitch, and the biggest news of all was the passing of Ernie Harwell. Today is as bad of a day as I can remember to be a sports fan. I have an extreme passion in being a sports fan, I often wonder how people who are not sports fans share their passions. Days like today remind me that while it is great to be a fan sometimes it really hurts(sucks).

I was pissed off as hell after that shitty offsides goal.

However, I turned it off from FSN-Detroit and turned on my dvr to watch Lost and get my mind centered.

Detroit cannot win the cup every year. We have a great organization led by Illitch the best owner in the league and Holland the best GM and Babcock, the best coach. I fully expect this to be a nervous offseason, as Lidstrom decides whether to retire or not. However, the organization is in great hands. i know there is still game 4, which actually maybe the last game in Joe Louis, but the writing is on the wall. Yet another dong shot.

Today is as bad of a day as I can remember to be a sports fan.

In my personal opinion, I don't think today is as bad as the 24-hour period that encompassed Bo's death and the loss to OSU that ended Michigan's undefeated season and thus our chances for national title contention, and in turn sent Florida on to the NC game instead.

But its times like those that make the good times even greater (such as Michigan getting its revenge against Florida the very next year in the Capital One bowl in what is still Urban Meyer's only bowl defeat).

True, but the Michigan Hating God that has been lingering along for the past year has been completely ridiculous.

Lions - Enough said.  At least by the grace of God, the Rams picked Bradford.

Tigers - Choke artists that get burned in the play-in playoff game.  One of the worst end of the season chokes I have seen.

Red Wings - Lose game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Pistons - Not only to they suck for the entire regular season, but they decide to start winning at the END of the season and pretty much screwed themselves out of a top 5 pick.

Michigan football - Can't make a bowl game.

Michigan basketball - Can't even make the NIT after being in the NCAA tournament.

Michigan hockey - Horrible start, tremedous middle, horrible end.

Deaths of Mark Fidrych, Bill Davidson, Coleen Howe, Ernie Harwell.

This is one of the worst Detroit/Michigan sports years in recent memory, if not the worst since I've been born.

Touche.

I was referring to the Miami game.

I exaggerated when I said the Pistons started to win at the end of the season.  They basically went from 5th to 7th worse in the leauge.  However, that did completely screw them out of taking Monroe or Cousins unless they somehow sneak into the top 5 in the lottery or if one of them falls.  Don't even get me started on if they take the European kid.

If it makes anyone laugh or smile I tripped and fell on my face walking down the sidewalk today downtown in front of two gorgeous women who preceded to laugh at me out loud. I'm willing to share this with everyone in order to help heal the pain.

Actually there was quite a crowd around the area where I fell so I didn't want to cause any kind of scene. It just so happened that the two best looking women happened to be the only ones who found it insanely funny. Anyways, I played the " get up fast and pretend it didn't even happen" card which probably made me look even stupider.

"You see what you did?  I was so distracted by your beautiful eyes that I tripped and fell.  You have to at least let me buy you dinner now."  I might take a dive in the future just to try this out.

We may be down 3-0 in the series, but I'm still proud to be a Wings fan. Most successful franchise in the past 20 years in the NHL, and no other team has made the playoffs every year since 1990. So even when I'm getting chirped by all my non-Red Wing fans, I can still comeback with that. Hopefully we can somehow make it a series on Thursday.

Just think on February 1st it appeared that the Wings could very well miss the playoffs by 5 points and the umich hockey team would miss the NCAA's...in 3 months time they both made it to the final eght in the respective playoffs.  That is a sweet turnaround and arguably created more excitement than past years when it was just about what seeding either team would get in their respective playoffs.

The Wings aren't dead yet, but I do hear a violin starting up in the background.

Either way, I view hockey this year as the only saving grace to an otherwise brutal year of sports.

that San Jose deserved to win. Unfortunately that pisses me off more, as the series should for all intents and purposes be 2-1 Wings. But maybe that's just me. We got screwed on that "kicking motion" goal (the rule is pretty bad...apparently the 'kicking motion' doesn't have to be directed towards the goal. Whatever kick Z delivered was actually directed AWAY from the goal), but SJ outplayed us tonight. Howard made some pretty sweet saves, just like last game, but between the killer soft goal and Nabokov going crazy only when he needed to, we didn't really deserve the win. To me, that's a double dong punch.

While this week may suck, we need times like these to truly appreciate and revel in the thrill of victory. Always remember the bad, for without the bad, we cannot truly enjoy the good.

When the Red Wings hoist the Cup once again, when the Wolverines grasp that glass football, and when Beilein cuts that net down all of the pain and suffering will be worth it. Press on my fellow Michigan sports fans for greener pastures lie ahead!

I was watching the Wings game with my fiancee, who fell asleep about midway through the third with the Wings still up 3-1.  When she woke up, I was pouring myself a shot of Wild Turkey.

At that point, she didn't even have to ask how the game ended.

the Acme Ball Kicker.

It is a large steering wheel, like those on old ships, and on each spoke of the wheel is a size-14 steel-toed boot. You simply spin the wheel and "Ya' put your whole self in."

(Options include automatic spinning, and smaller boots)
