Based on what I saw tonight, he's pretty much a beast. He ran through a ton of tackles, and trucked more than a few ND defenders.

The award's for guys who come up big in clutch situations. Can anyone really say Gerhart hasn't met that basic criteria after watching tonight's game, and his previous performances this season?

for the Heisman voters out there. I think Gerhart deserves it, but you couldn't pick a better team to play against.

I love Gerhart's smashmouth style. He is a very physical runner and also has speed and good vision. I hope he wins the trophy because he is a throwback style runner.
It helps that his Offensive Line is also Physical and they open some holes for him. That Offensive Line plays like a Unit and what is remarkable is that they actually have 2 RS Freshmen starting on that line.
Stanford is a young team, with 61 freshmen or sophomores on the roster, which is only 2 less than Michigan had this past season.
It is remarkable how well they are coached and how disciplined and competitive that they play....with all of that youth on the roster.

In a year where no one's really separated himself head and shoulders above the rest I think Tebow should get it just because him and Florida get it done every week, and I also think he should get it as a lifetime achievement type thing.
Best college football player of all time.
I know there are lots of Tebow haters here... neg away... I don't care because Tebow guaranteed me eternal life if I would bear witness to his greatness.
(That last part is sarcastic but I am serious about thinking Tebow should get it.)
(And yes, Gerhart seems like a good kid and he is a hell of a good player. He pwned tonight, but, not to take anything away from him but it was against ND. The Heisman isn't just about stats or individual greatness, but, a player that also is an integral part of his team getting it done. Which he has been, but, Stanford is not an NC contender.)

I haven't followed Florida too closely this year. One of my friends is a huge Florida (and Michigan) fan and he thinks Tebow has been having a mediocre year, not even near worthy of votes for the Heisman. Defense and a weak schedule helps Florida win games this year, not Tebow.

I'm 24, and he's the most celebrated college player that my generation can remember, at least. A second Heisman would perfectly capture the Tebow media lovefest in the history books, and would be far more significant than adding someone to the Gino Torretta/Rashaan Salaam group.

1. The media owes it to its own "journalistic integrity" to vote Tebow; they've been treating him like the greatest player ever for three years. Voting Gerhart (or someone else) is admitting that Tebow is just another Heisman winner.
2. The Heisman has always been a popularity contest.
3. The Tebow era has been hilarious, and this needs to be preserved somehow for posterity.

on 30 carries. He's a great college back, but he's averaging 5.4 ypc on the year. He's not the second coming of Barry Sanders. Any NFL GM or college HC would take Tate.

And it's just my opinion but Gerhart was the best player on the field. Just like you say he was another RB to have a good game against Notre Dame, well Stanford's secondary is nothing to write home about. Tate also has another elite WR on the opposite side of him and a top 5 QB throwing him the ball. Their offense does and has done that to everyone. Gerhart has a ton of yards after contact which is what is impressive. And he was well over 6 ypc in the game which is fantastic for any RB.

it really sucks that so many people watched the kid for the first time tonight and say "oh well yeah he played out of his mind against a bad ND defense" when he has been doing this all year long. if he played on a team in the central or eastern time zone for a slightly more relevant team he'd be at the top of a lot of lists

Numbers may not be everything, but they are something. He has ridiculous numbers against decent competition, he should at least get an invite. You can make a case for a lot of players this year, and Gerhart probably has one of the more impressive stat lines.

I think Toby has as good a set of numbers as McCoy, given their positions, and has played against overall stronger competition. When all the hype cleared, the Big XII was weak on top last year and nothing appears to have improved this season.
Though McCoy is a great ballplayer, I still think there is a strong possibility Texas is a paper tiger. Texas beat Oklahoma, who is 7-5 right now, by 3, and Oklahoma State which was also supposed to be a big win is tarnished as well. They didn't do any better against Wyoming than TCU did.
Let's not even get into the numerous Big XII flops in BCS bowl games.

Gerhart did his damage against 11 BCS teams to McCoy's 8 and I don't think there's any argument that the Pac-10 is stronger and deeper than the Big XII this year.

Why does everyone want to give gerhart heisman consideration, when shonn green couldn't get any kind of heisman buzz iowa did have 4 losses, but standford has 3. I believe 2008 iowa would wipe the floor with 2009 standford.

It's simply a matter of the level of competition. Last year, the candidates who finished ahead of Greene were Bradford, McCoy, Tebow, Harrell and Crabtree, all of whom had amazing seasons. If anyone had a comparable season this year, they would be the odds-on favorites. This year, Bradford obviously has been hurt, McCoy and Tebow haven't come close to matching last year's numbers, and no one else has put up monster statistics. If Shonn Greene had put up last year's numbers this year, he would be the frontrunner.

According to the Ed McCaffrey Corollary to the Randall Cunningham Rule, Gerhart may not be compared to Green because he can only be compared to other white running backs. Gerhart is vastly better than Sam McGuffie and that guy LSU had a couple years ago, and has been known to draw comparisons to Hopalong Cassidy and Tom Harmon from senile great-grandfathers across the country. We can't be sure, but based on our limited data, it is extremely likely that Gerhart is a legitimate Heisman candidate.

If Toby Gerhart wins the Heisman, chalk him up as another Heisman winner who will fade into obscurity once he graduates. Not that the Heisman should be awarded on pro potential, but still...

If he's putting up the numbers and performing for his team when they really need him, and he has, then why should he be given any less consideration than other candidates? Just because he isn't playing for national title team doesn't mean he isn't one of the greatest players this season. He's shown he deserves it.

I think he can be a Mike Alstott-type in the pros. A powerful, primarily-blocking fullback who can also carry the ball and run over people in short yardage situations. Brian Leonard is that type of player as well. I don't know, I just think there's something very similar about those three players. I can't quite put my finger on white it is . . .

Do you mean "a mediocre, hopelessly over-rated player"? Do we know that he can be a blocking back? How much has he actually, you know, run-blocked in his 1700 hard rushing season?
I'm not trying to say that Gerhart will be a mediocre, over-rated player, just pointing out that your comparison seems to rely more on skin color than skill-set.

It's just kind of a running joke that if you win the Heisman, you're probably going to suck in the NFL. There are a few exceptions (Barry Sanders, Bo Jackson, Charles Woodson), but there are a lot of failures.

Toby has shown he deserves it with the numbers he's put up against some very good opponents.
