I'm a fairly insensitive prick and usually when I hear some advocacy group demanding an apology I just roll my eyes. But...goddamn. What sort of environment do they have going on in South Bend?
OT - [REDACTED] Loves Notre Dame
Wowza. That is a truly awful cartoon.
yeah, they'll be done in that position
What does this have to do with Tim Hardaway? Just because of the homophobic comments he made a couple years back before the All-Star Game? I don't think there is any sort of connection, so it would be best to change the title probably.
That being said, publishing the cartoon is not funny and way over the line. If it were a similar joke about a black person, the cartoon would never have ran and the person would have been fired for just turning it in to the publisher for print.
Title modified, but only slightly since I'm not creative enough at this time of night.
I was wondering what Leon had to say on the subject. Case closed. Leon has spoken. ;)
i think we have different definitions of "clever" and "witty." for example, i usually don't use those words to describe hateful and inflammatory language.
You should qualify this. The joke would be witty and clever if you are telling it to people who know you well enough to know that you aren't a homophobic asshole. I have many gay friends, and amongst ourselves, something like this would be witty because we know it is completely sarcastic and most gay people like to make fun of themselves for being gay. But if you don't know the person saying it, then many people would immediately think "Wow! Wtf man?"
But printing it in the paper, is just plain stupid and wrong.
The surprising thing about this is that the gay rights blog that brought this to our attention hasn't been infected and killed by some sort of deadly computer virus yet. How's that for political correctness?
Just because it is "more clever" than literally saying "beat up gays with bats" doesn't make it clever and witty. Suggesting that violence is the best way to deal with homosexuals, as if they are some sort of disease on society, is absolutely not okay in any way, no matter what kind of "joke" you are hiding behind
Oh, shut up. This is not a case of political correctness. People love to throw that phrase around when others take offense to their jokes because, hey, it's just a joke, right? And I'm taking it too seriously because I don't think jokes about beating minorities are funny, right? I should just chill
Bullshit. If you want to make jokes about race or sexuality, absolutely go for it. But when your punchline is "kill or injure them seriously to discourage their sexual preference," you are not being witty or clever in any way. The play on words wouldn't exist without the subject matter, they coexist.
PC is not calling your secretary hun or calling an African American an African American instead of a negro. There is nothing that sets off the PC meter here. This is just a hateful cartoon.
I don't see how promoting violence against gays is at all witty or funny. Just because something is less obvious or blatant does make the message any less meaningful and hateful.
This here board is going straight overboard with the PC stuff lately. You people...
I don't think it was clever AND witty. Jokes about bludgeoning gay men to the point of brain damage just don't have that "oomph" that I think is needed to qualify as both clever AND witty.
Now if the cartoonist could have worked in some reference to raping a child's corpse, then I'd have to agree.
How is it clever or witty? It looks like a 1960's KKK cartoon. That is about how long it has been since the word "fruit" was used in that manner on a regular basis.
Excuse me, but as someone who has been non-violent since 1970, I just can't find anything remotely funny about it. I don't have any particular affinity for any particular group being stereotyped; I think all stereotypes are damaging, both to the person being stereotyped and the intellect of the person making the stereotype.
As for the violence, I wouldn't even find it funny if someone made a cartoon about beating OSU fans into paralysis with a baseball bat. There is a point where it's just too dangerous to be funny.
this poster. But I have to ask, if you are truely non-viloent, why are you so hateful in your comments at other locations? You have to know that words can incite violence. And while name calling is not itself violent, it can lead to violence, at least when one is not protected by the internet. Now, it is just a question. Please don't get in a rage.
The joke was neither clever nor witty.
I really think you should change the title of this thread.
that he had already sent it his LOI and you stopped being paranoid?
What would Tim Hardaway Jr think about his dad being associated with this crap? Or about a "Michigan Fan" being the person who did it. Allen Iverson made a rap record with deragatory words towards gays and violence toward women. If you insist on bringing an athlete's past transgressions into this, why don't you call it "Allen Iverson loves Notre Dame?"
I hope Brian or Tim change or censor the name of this thread.
The joke was definitely off color. It was definitely in poor taste. It never should have been published. I can't help that I still laughed. I'm an insensitive prick, I'm a huge fan of dead baby jokes.
What's the difference between a truck full of bowling balls and a truck full of dead babies???
You can't unload the bowling balls with a pitchfork.
I can't help that I chuckled when I heard the first barrage of jokes about Haiti. As awful as that is and as awful as I felt about it afterwards, the joke was still funny.
It's the kind of humor that should stay private though.
What's the only thing grosser than 1000 dead babies in a tree?
One dead baby in a thousand trees.
What has four legs and an arm?
A doberman in a nursery.
South Park clip when Cartman contracts HIV:
Sorry, I don't buy it: you can help that you laugh at inappropriate jokes. Private or not, there's nothing funny about beating gays and there's nothing funny about 50,000+ dying in Haiti.
Mature and learn compassion. It turns out that there's a lot that's funny out there, it just tends not to involve deep human suffering.
I don't have a truckload of bowling balls on my carport.
OK, moving on.
I liked the original punchline better--"AIDS". Call me old fashioned, but I guess I'm a sucker for a good AIDS joke.
But that punchline doesn't even make sense. People don't become brain dead from AIDS.
Man, that was one fucked up cartoon.
Maybe the editor originally changed the punchline so it would make better sense.
EDIT. Linked article above contains link to the OBSERVER's (paper that ran cartoon in question) apology (here). One commenter in article linked above suggests that the asst. editor who approved the cartoon had no idea the word "fruit" was a derogatory term, read it literally and had no idea the cartoon was hurtful. The other commenters eat this one alive.
It took several comments here before I even understood what the thread title was supposed to mean.
It's not like ND is a major university or anything with policies around tolerance etc.
As a person who has friends/family who fall into that demographic gay/lesbian I will say that's the most pathetic cartoon I have seen in quite some time (I mean, seriously, try some originality even). Then again, it *is* ND.
It's never difficult to respect other people.
thread sucks. From the OP who puts Tim Hardaway in the equation (remember his son is coming to play basketball here), to the fact that the thread points out that ND should be above letting this kind of crap be published only to have Mgobloggers actually say they think it is funny, or unoffensive. Im with CrankthatDonovan...this is not about being PC. Violence against gays DOES happen, and is not fucking funny in the least bit.
All caps does not make your argument valid
THE VIOLENCE AGAINST GAYS IS NOT WHAT IS FUNNY ABOUT THE JOKE.
You're right. What is funny about the joke is nothing. Also, keep your voice down.
This will be my last post on the thread.
Probably a good idea. Maybe you should take a couple of plays off.
This statement had to be made?
This cartoon appearing in a paper is not funny in the least. But something like this could be funny if it was said only in the company of people who know each other very well and know that the people in the group are supporters of the lgbt community. Maybe I am just a gay person with a sick sense of humor...in fact, I know I am. But I enjoy dark and sarcastic humor when I am among friends. Not when it is printed in a newspaper though or said in front of people you don't know.
I agree with your sentiment though MadtownMaize...if only because you correctly predicted that 15-20 Sparty football players would put on ski masks and assault men and women a while back.
who has read many of my posts knows I love a good joke. I also love to make fun of small segments of the population (Sparties, Buckeyes and Domers (sorry Irish, I do like you)). I like to leave violence and real life minorities who are persecuted against in the real world alone.
ND is one classy Catholic university. I was raised Catholic and attended Catholic school 1-6 and I find that cartoon deplorable. Just one more reason to hate ND and question the dogmatic beliefs I grew up with.
Right because the student newspaper speaks for the entire University of Notre Dame and of course represents the views of the entire student populous
I have been questioning the religion I was raised with for years. I think it is healthy to challenge things I have been force fed. And I never said that paper speaks for the entire university. I said it was another reason to hate ND.
Not a fan of being force fed anything either.
You seemed to be insinuating something more than what you actually wrote, if not then don't worry about my post, I should probably be in bed right now anyway maybe I didn't read it correctly.
Per your legend, you're supposed to "=)" a post that is filled with sarcasm, remember?
I like to change it up a little bit sometimes =)
