I'm a fairly insensitive prick and usually when I hear some advocacy group demanding an apology I just roll my eyes. But...goddamn. What sort of environment do they have going on in South Bend?

What does this have to do with Tim Hardaway? Just because of the homophobic comments he made a couple years back before the All-Star Game? I don't think there is any sort of connection, so it would be best to change the title probably.

That being said, publishing the cartoon is not funny and way over the line. If it were a similar joke about a black person, the cartoon would never have ran and the person would have been fired for just turning it in to the publisher for print.

You should qualify this. The joke would be witty and clever if you are telling it to people who know you well enough to know that you aren't a homophobic asshole. I have many gay friends, and amongst ourselves, something like this would be witty because we know it is completely sarcastic and most gay people like to make fun of themselves for being gay. But if you don't know the person saying it, then many people would immediately think "Wow! Wtf man?"

But printing it in the paper, is just plain stupid and wrong.

Bullshit. If you want to make jokes about race or sexuality, absolutely go for it. How is it clever or witty? It looks like a 1960's KKK cartoon. That is about how long it has been since the word "fruit" was used in that manner on a regular basis.

Excuse me, but as someone who has been non-violent since 1970, I just can't find anything remotely funny about it. I don't have any particular affinity for any particular group being stereotyped; I think all stereotypes are damaging, both to the person being stereotyped and the intellect of the person making the stereotype.

As for the violence, I wouldn't even find it funny if someone made a cartoon about beating OSU fans into paralysis with a baseball bat. There is a point where it's just too dangerous to be funny.

What would Tim Hardaway Jr think about his dad being associated with this crap? Or about a "Michigan Fan" being the person who did it. Allen Iverson made a rap record with deragatory words towards gays and violence toward women. If you insist on bringing an athlete's past transgressions into this, why don't you call it "Allen Iverson loves Notre Dame?"

I hope Brian or Tim change or censor the name of this thread.

You can't unload the bowling balls with a pitchfork.

I can't help that I chuckled when I heard the first barrage of jokes about Haiti. As awful as that is and as awful as I felt about it afterwards, the joke was still funny.

It's the kind of humor that should stay private though.

I put up a tough front, but deep down I just want to be held.

Sorry, I don't buy it: you can help that you laugh at inappropriate jokes. Private or not, there's nothing funny about beating gays and there's nothing funny about 50,000+ dying in Haiti.

Mature and learn compassion. It turns out that there's a lot that's funny out there, it just tends not to involve deep human suffering.

EDIT. Linked article above contains link to the OBSERVER's (paper that ran cartoon in question) apology (here). One commenter in article linked above suggests that the asst. editor who approved the cartoon had no idea the word "fruit" was a derogatory term, read it literally and had no idea the cartoon was hurtful. The other commenters eat this one alive.

It took several comments here before I even understood what the thread title was supposed to mean.

It's not like ND is a major university or anything with policies around tolerance etc.

As a person who has friends/family who fall into that demographic gay/lesbian I will say that's the most pathetic cartoon I have seen in quite some time (I mean, seriously, try some originality even). Then again, it *is* ND.

From the OP who puts Tim Hardaway in the equation (remember his son is coming to play basketball here), to the fact that the thread points out that ND should be above letting this kind of crap be published only to have Mgobloggers actually say they think it is funny, or unoffensive. Im with CrankthatDonovan...this is not about being PC. Violence against gays DOES happen, and is not fucking funny in the least bit.

This cartoon appearing in a paper is not funny in the least. But something like this could be funny if it was said only in the company of people who know each other very well and know that the people in the group are supporters of the lgbt community. Maybe I am just a gay person with a sick sense of humor...in fact, I know I am. But I enjoy dark and sarcastic humor when I am among friends. Not when it is printed in a newspaper though or said in front of people you don't know.

I agree with your sentiment though MadtownMaize...if only because you correctly predicted that 15-20 Sparty football players would put on ski masks and assault men and women a while back.
