OT-Tim Donaghy opens "Pandora's Box."

Tim Donaghy has opened "Pandora's Box" in his interview on "60 Minutes." The preview can be found here:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/12/04/tim-donaghy-60-minutes-mo_n_379...

The interview looks like it might be a little bland when it finally airs, but there is one statement here that is probably giving David Stern chest pains right now:

"I knew there were certain relationships that existed between referees and players, referees and coaches and referees and owners that influence the point spreads in games,"

I have believed this for about thirty years now, so it is "old news" to me, but nobody connected on this level has ever said this in public in this way. The NBA may have a hard time convincing the public that they aren't the WWE if they aren't careful here.

I am waiting for Stern to try and get an injunction to prevent the airing of the interview. Hopefully, he is not successful. I would love to see officiating become a lot more transparent than it currently is in all sports. This could be a start.

Agree somewhat.

But, speaking for myself, I have not seriously watched the NBA since game six of the 2002 Sacramento / LA series. Its alot like WWE.

Just another day at the office

This is not news to me. Anyone who knows the history of the NBA/ABA understands the underhandedness that has been a part of the game since the very beginning. Back room deals, gambling, cocaine (now weed), terrible contracts, etc...

It's actually all a large reason why I love the NBA. It's far more player driven than any of the other major sports, and it provides for some rather wacky and unique characters that I love to watch.

Ron Artest
Donald Sterling
Chris Andersen
Ron Harper (he can't fucking read! where else do you get that?)
Dennis Rodman
Chuck
Oak
MJ
Latrell Sprewell
Starbury
Allen Houston and Penny Hardaway's corpses
Kobe-Shaq-Phil
Vinsanity (Oh help I've been shot!)
Zach Randoplh- see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rh2fn01cngg
Ruben Patterson
Eddie Griffin
Andrei Kirilenko (and his wife's crazy, you can sleep with whoever you want on your birthday present she gives him every year)
Pau and Marc Gasol's facial expressions
And stuff like this...

The NBA. Where amazing happens...and Mark Blount is gets paid over $7 million to look bored on the bench during TWolves games.

saying that...

ron harper "can't fucking read" is a little off base. the guy has speech and reading disability. he has also said that if he hadn't made it to the NBA that he wanted to be a teacher so he could help kids that had the same issues as him.

If Ron Harper hadn't made it

If Ron Harper hadn't made it into the NBA chances are he wouldn't be a teacher. Guy's academic record in high school was atrocious. In fact, the only reason he was able to get help with overcoming is speech impediment and learning disability was because he was a highly recruited basketball player. I'm happy that he's come a long way though.

Bill Walton, one of my all-time favorite people, and basketball players also had a speech impediment that he overcame, and he is another one of the primary reasons why I love the NBA.

Deadspin published excerpts

Deadspin published excerpts of the book after the NBA killed the first attempt to publish it. There's some pretty ridiculous stuff in there.

Wow - Dick Bavetta comes

Wow - Dick Bavetta comes across as one of the most corrupt officials ever. (Though it makes me wonder if Donaghy has some kind of ax to grind against him.)

One question, though: if the league really subtly tried to extend playoff series to the max, how was it that none of the six NBA Finals involving Michael Jordan went seven games? The last five all ended in Game 6. You'd think the league would want the ratings bonanza that would come from having MJ in a winner-take-all championship game.

Unfortunately I dont think

Unfortunately I dont think that this interview will help make Officiating more transparent. All it does is bring into question the actions of just about every official regardless of sport. I agree that officiating in all sports needs to be more transparent but this is not the way to make that happen.

The Suns-Spurs series sticks in my mind. How the hell do you suspend players for stepping 2 feet onto the court?

The NBA actually has a pretty

The NBA actually has a pretty clear about that: anyone who steps onto the court during a fight is automatically suspended. I think it's a little harsh and doesn't allow for interpretation, but it has been consistently applied. That rule essentially cost the Knicks a playoff series against Miami in the late '90s.

NBA is a complete joke.

NBA is a complete joke. Officiating is wretched and unbearable. Anytime the supposed superstars drive to the hole, they get bailed out with a foul while the big men can beat each other up with no whistle blown. Even the gameplay is boring. All the game has become is pick and roll or one on one. Nothing enjoyable about that. I've only enjoyed Pistons games and that's just because they're the team I root for.

Even though I root for the

Even though I root for the Pistons, I think the NBA sucks now. Ever since the MJ's, Bird, Zeke, Chuck and the rest of the old guard left, the game is now relegated to spoiled pretty boy primadonnas. Can't even play tough defense with today's pussified rules. Besides Shaq and Howard, the big men are pussies. Lebron and D-Wade and the like would NOT be taking it to the rack like that against the likes of Sir Charles, Oak Tree, Karl Malone,or Kevin Duckworth (RIP). Yeah they would have earned a trip to the charity stripe, but after a hard foul and a taste of the hardwood, they would think twice about going to the hole.

Can't even play tough defense with today's pussified rules.

How does that jibe with the fact that in the 1980s, scoring averages were much higher than they are now?
