I still do not trust Porcello more than JV. No damn way.
Complete the sweep!

Complete the sweep!
His ERA is still sub 4.00, lets not get crazy here. If you have more confidence in Porcello to make a quality start than I suggest you pay more attention.
If I'm going to be honest I might say Porcello, but I'm more inclinded to take the whole year/career into account for JV. I'm won't sugar coat it JV has disappointed thus far, but people to give him more grief than they should. The ace of our staff is working out some issues while being able to keep his team in games, just ride the wave while he works it out.
PS- Torii getting XBH's like crazy this month 2-2
That's fair, I guess I'm more optimistic than most that JV's BABIP will regress to the mean and that he'll regain his stuff sooner rather than later.
Verlander's ERA is 3.99 right now.
Damn bloopers killing JV this year.
His strikeouts are way down??
2010: 8.79 K/9
2011: 8.96 K/9
2012: 9.03 K/9
2013: 8.75 K/9
If anything JV has been terribly unlucky shown by the .323 BABIP which is the highest it's been in his career. Now you could argue that the stuff isn't as good so naturally more balls will be put in play but it also paints the picture that JV is simply getting worked by the baseball gods.
The walk rate being up is probably the most alarming sign, because he simply hasn't had the fastball command consistently this year and he seems to be throwing more sliders than curveballs than in past years. I can't put my finger on why he hasn't been more consistent this year but for an ace having an off year i'll take a 3.7 ERA while still working out the kinks.
That 1st inning featured a couple bad fielding plays and a couple terrible bloopers. And to be not fair, those bloopers were swings and misses last couple of years.
This time 2 years ago those were the only kinds of hits people got off him it seemed...
It just so happens that the offense doesn't always click with him on the mound. A few weeks ago I saw a stat showing that we score more runs with Max on the mound than any other pitcher in baseball. That's obviously a large factor. But I will also agree that I hope we see more of JV from 2 years ago the rest of this year
Verlander gets the 2nd most run support on the staff and is in the top 15 best run support in baseball among qualified starters at 5.09 per game. Scherzer gets nearly 6, which is the most in the majors. Porcello the lowest in the Tigers rotation at about 4.4
Sad trombone for Chris Sale, who gets a major league worst 2.78 runs per game support, which is how you go 6-9 despite having the 8th best fWAR and 5th best bWAR among MLB pitchers.
I don't necissarily think the sky is falling with JV, but everyone saying "It's just bad luck! He's really not that bad!" is irking me a little bit.
He's dropped around 5mph off his fastball since last season. He's got the most walks on the team by a long shot (49, next highest is Sanchez with 33). He has the highest WHIP of any starter on the team (1.37 going into today's game). He has the most earned runs of any starter on the team (and the 3rd highest ERA, with Fister not far behind).
He's not garbage, he's not washed up, and I'm sure once he gets out of this, albeit extended, rut he'll be just fine. But you could make a pretty sound case that he's the 4th best pitcher in the rotation this season, and he just signed the biggest contract an MLB pitcher has ever signed. It's more than a bit concerning.
He might be trying too hard to live up to his monster contract. That's the only way I can explain his struggles.
Rumors of an Inge return make me ill. I know we have to replace Jhonny if he gets suspended, but no Inge please!
Most people don't think suspensions will occur this year, but who knows? Braun was genius asking for his suspension now. Would cost him much more next year when his new contract kicks in.
may want to take his suspension THIS year. He is a free agent, and if he waits til next year - he will have that hanging over his head - thus making him much less attractive on the market.
It's in the Tiger's best interest he serve the suspension next year, but doesn't seem to be in his...
Ties it up.
Who broke the Verlander?
Verlander hasnt been the same since he got smacked around by Sandoval.
Bad day for outfield defense by the Tigers.
JV will be fine.
The man has pitched a shit load of innings in the last few years.
Can't we all just appreciate what he has done and stop getting pissed about one lousy streak ? Hell he could be shitty this whole season and I would still be happy as hell he is a Tiger.
Some baseball fans, man.
I agree that he'll probably eventually go back to being the JV we all know and love, but you can't ask fans to just not care that he's having an awful season. The guy just signed the biggest contract a pitcher has ever signed and he's at best the fourth best starter on our team this season. It's not just a 'lousy streak'.
I've never understood the whole "he just signed a HUGE contract" thing.
Look all pro athletes get paid way more than the rest of us. That shouldn't even be a point in arguments anymore.
It isn't like JV said to himself "Man, I am going to sign this contract and that'll be it for me. I'm going to stop putting in the work to be great.I've earned it."
To get to the level JV is on the brain just isn't wired that way. I'm guessing he is more pissed at himself than you are.
It may not be a lousy streak. He could be hurt, any number of things.
I blame fans for thinking that JV is somehow doing this on purpose because he magically became complacent because of the big contract. Every contract is a big contract. That argument doesn't hold water, in my opinion.
I haven't seen anyone, myself included, speculate that he's doing it on purpose because he just signed the biggest contract a pitcher has ever signed.
What I have seen people say, and what I was implying with my comment, is that typically the highest paid pitcher in the game is the best pitcher in the game. Not always, but usually.
Now we've just signed JV to the largest contract a pitcher has ever signed, and not only is he not pitching like one of the best pitchers in baseball, he's arguably playing like the worst starter on his own team, and has at best been the 4th best pitcher in the rotation. That's where my issue with his play has been, and why to me (and others) the contract is relevant.
If you've seen people arguing that he's really not trying at all because he suddenly has all this money, then I agree with you, that's stupid. But that's definitely not the point I was trying to make, nor have I seen anyone seriously argue that point about JV.
In all fairness to JV, it hasn't been a lousy season. He actually had the best month of March/April of his career this year. He's had a lousy June and July.
Dirks butcher job in left field leads to 4 runs.
Yeah, that was terrible. So was JV's pitch, which deserved to be crushed, but I mean come on, it hit him in the glove. You're a major league outfielder, you've got to make that catch.
Ya it was a terrible pitch but, there are 7 guys behind him for a reason, that's a play that should have been made.
I don't know, I think JV's injured. He doesn't look like himself out there. I mean, he's never been a terribly efficient pitcher, but I don't remember him going through a stretch like he's gone through lately. He hasn't struck out more than 5 batters in a game since June 12th, and he's just been very hittable, with a couple exceptions.
I don't know, I just feel like he's not feeling 100%, and is trying to tough it out, but is losing command in doing so.
It could be any number of things, innings catching up to him, he could be tipping, he could be nursing something...
He has had an awful lot of bad luck this year as mentioned above.
I just hope he figures it out before the post-season. This has got to be our year, if any.
Yeah, that's my feeling too. If it's fatigue or tendinitis or something like that, the best thing he can do is suck it up and sit out a week or two, so that he can be ready to dominate the playoffs.
game over, verlander and the defense is getting taken to pound town by the most pathetic team in MLB.
He is terrible. I cannot recall a Detroit athlete falling as rapidly as he has in one season.
Probably because you gave up on said team/player before they had a chance.
through epic collapses, humiliating performances in the World Series, and infuriatingly inconsistent regular seasons.
Frankly, I don't see how anyone CANNOT be skeptical about this franchise. After all they have as many championships as the Lions(4)despite having been around for decades longer than the Lions. The Tigers are an overrated franchise.
You're more than skeptical, you're downright cynical when it comes to sports in general.
he has a point. The tigers record of choking when it counts is legendary. Frankly if we don't win the world series Dumbroski and Leyland should be canned.
You lost me at Dumbrowski. Grow up.
Have higher standards. What about my post is immature? Sorry, if I have standards the Tigers need to meet.
The tigers have caved under pressure under the Leyland regime, especially JV. I have no time for blowing sunshine.
What about my post is immature?
Really? Spelling "Dombrowski" as "Dumbrowski" is the definition of immature.
I didn't mean to do that. It was a typo. thanks for reading my mind like an x man and catching my freudian slip. I hate this site sometime with people who take your posts out of context.
Nope, you can't blame that one on them. There is absolutely nothing about your post that would suggest that referring to Dombrowski as "Dumbrowski" (which is a common childish insult, btw) was an accident. Now, you may have legitimately made a typo, and that's fine, but you've go to understand how your post came across. Just recognize it and move on, rather than making yourself out to be some victim.
I did make a typo, which was a freudian slip to my true opinion of the management of the franchise.
What I HATE about mgoblog are the self-righteous individuals on this site.
Fine, it was a mistake. But what I love about MGoBlog is that we don't have people that shout about "Spartina" or "OSUck" or other similar childish names.
So, I downvoted you and explained when you asked what was immature about the post. You explained the accident, so we're all good holmes.
Brayan Pena is currently sprinting to your defense, I guess. Go Tigers.
Yeah, watching JV getting rocked by the white sox is raising my blood pressure. I walked away from the game, had a bannana and seeing Penna sprint across the bases made my day. It is all good.
edit: damn mobile
hm. well this is interesting...
Jesus, man. I honestly feel bad for you.
We are in the midst of "the good times." You should at least try to enjoy them.
You should have been born on the north side of Chicago in 1909
Dude (or lady dude). It's baseball. Bad slumps happen. All you can do is hope this isn't a season long slump.
Looks like it is a season long slump. Time to move JV to the fifth spot or have a serious one-on-one conversation if there is actually an injury JV is hiding.
Well, there are no "fifth spots" (nor first, second, third or fourth spots) until the playoffs, so sure move him to the "fifth spot."
GET RID OF THAT BUM!!!!
VMart being VMart. If the Tigers come back from this deficit, this is the type of game you look back on and say "wow, what a game to turn a 4 game winning streak into an X game winning streak" and maybe pull away in the division.
Billy Beane was right about his opinion of Dombroski and the Detroit Tigers...
How many WS have the As been in under BBs watch?
had to come out of a game early in the year with cracked skin on his pitching hand which caused him to bleed on the baseball.
It was Curt Schilling who said it would bother JV all season, and he wouldn't be able to grip a baseball with the right pressure.
..and here we are.
Wow Pena musta had to take a leak real bad after he hit that ball
Lead is down to three...
I have a feeling about this game. Big bats coming up, still have 6 outs left, it ain't over.
I agree and honestly I love what Pena did there. IMO at least, he was sending a message to his teammates saying hey we are still down by three so I'm not gonna trot because we gotta keep pushin all the way. I like that demeanor whether he meant that or not
Radio crew just said sore left Achilles for Hunter and is day-to-day. Can anyone fill me in on what happened?
He came up a little gimpy after a check swing. Finished the AB, didn't look too serious.
When Dunn made that error I thought for sure we'd put something together.
Dire straits now. Still, a loss here isn't the end of the world. Tigers are playing pretty well right now, just ran into a pretty good Peavy today.
Tying run at the plate, still on life support.
This thread is a tire fire. Its one game in July people!
matters when you're in a playoff race in September. They all matter.
We just took 3 of 4 on the road and the best pitcher in baseball is in a mechanical slump. Things could be much worse. FWIW I think JV has a great 2nd half, not that thats going out on a limb.
Felix Hernandez isn't in any kind of slump.
