How stupid can Jim Leyland be putting Velrander on the mound. What an idiot. Dave Dombrowski too. They should be fired. Sweeping the Indians was terrible.
August 22nd, 2011 at 8:23 PM ^
Underrated
August 22nd, 2011 at 8:27 PM ^
I'm afraid I fucked up your "underrated" tag by hitting "normal," which is itself a pretty fucked up tag IMHE. The lazy man's +1?
August 22nd, 2011 at 8:21 PM ^
This will be a tough series. Rays have a better record than us despite playing in a much tougher division. Tonight is a must win with JV on the mound. Hopefully the Mariners can take out the Indians tonight, would be nice.
August 22nd, 2011 at 8:21 PM ^
Tonight should be crystal-clear evidence that we better get a 3rd catcher so that we don't have to turn to Brandon Inge behind the plate if Avila gets nicked up, much like he did in the 2nd inning. We're begging for trouble here until Martinez gets himself right.
August 22nd, 2011 at 8:26 PM ^
A couple of Inge starts behind the plate wouldn't end the world. If I had to guess, he'll probably be back there a couple of times even if Avila stays healthy-ish.
August 22nd, 2011 at 8:31 PM ^
I'm not sure I agree. Given that he hasn't caught with any frequency at all in 7 years, he might make an unholy mess back there.
August 22nd, 2011 at 10:56 PM ^
I don't know if they even plan on having Inge catch at all. With the knee injuries he has had, I don't think I would want him back there. Don Kelly might be a better option as a backup right now, or they might be thinking about giving the catcher from Toledo a chance. They're probably just holding on right now, hoping Avila can make it to Sept. 1, when rosters expand.
Good win today, although Valverde has now looked shaky in two straight appearances. Mildly concerning.
August 22nd, 2011 at 8:54 PM ^
We'd see Kelly behind the dish before Inge.

Anyone else see Avila get smoked in the neck with the foul tip? BAMF.
August 22nd, 2011 at 8:44 PM ^
Awful crowd tonight at the stadium. Tiger fans may be in the majority.
August 22nd, 2011 at 8:48 PM ^
A couple of times when Verlander didn't get a pitch on the corner, I thought I heard a pronounced booing from the crowd.
Reminds of me of the old Montreal Expo crowds... or a Ryan field crowd.
August 22nd, 2011 at 8:46 PM ^
Man, we cannot hit worth a shit. Not giving Verlander a lot of back-up today.
August 22nd, 2011 at 8:54 PM ^
And Verlander is at 102 pitches through 6.
August 22nd, 2011 at 8:56 PM ^
Look out JV.
Verlander looks human today, he has mere ace stuff tonight, not the nearly unhittable stuff we are use to.
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:02 PM ^
And Niemann has ace stuff tonight too. He could go a complete game if we don't start getting some hits off him.
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:05 PM ^
How bad is that? The guy has given up 1 run and 3 hits through 6 innings, and I find myself disappointed. I feel like Homer ordering a Fosters:
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:15 PM ^
should help prepare the Tigers for the playoff pressure. Just hope they pull out the win while they gain in helpful experience.
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:17 PM ^
one of those games that they will lose as soon as Verlander goes out.
Even without his best stuff....he is just damn tough.
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:18 PM ^
Verlander going into beast mode... enters the seventh with over 100 pitches and gets a 1-2-3 inning. A run would be nice... If the Tigers hold on, JV has a chance for 20 wins before September.
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:29 PM ^
2 on, 1 out and the big guy at the plate. Even if they walk him, we've got a prime opportunity to put this one on much firmer ground.
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:32 PM ^
No if needed, they are going to walk him. I like Avila but wish Victor Martinez we at bat here.
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:28 PM ^
Delmon Young doubles... which is good... but BJ Upton busted his shoulder on the play.
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:30 PM ^
Nice play by Joyce backing up the play on Young's double, preventing Boesch from scoring.
Hard to see how Upton hurt his shoulder on that play, didn't really have a hard collision with the wall.
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:32 PM ^
He must have hit that wall just right. It looked like he was just stopping himself.
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:34 PM ^
Okay, I'm not a fan of Arby's commercials in general, but that one in particular was just not right.
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:36 PM ^
I never saw that commercial before, it was kind of stunning, gross and funny all at the same time.
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:36 PM ^
He hasn't called that all fucking night.
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:39 PM ^
Strike two was a borderline call. Strike three was terrible.
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:40 PM ^
Looks like it worked out in the end. Peralta with 2 steaks.
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:41 PM ^
Looking at that replay, had the throw been cut off and played properly, that 2nd run wouldn't have beaten the play at 3rd, and likely would have come off the board.
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:42 PM ^
You can put the H wherever you want. Just keep the RBIs coming.
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:44 PM ^
This thing might tighten up yet.
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:51 PM ^
Tied 2-2 in the 9th, but the Mariners have them loaded with no one out.
EDIT: 3-2 Mariners. If this holds, the Tigs stretch their lead to 5.5, and the Indians fall into a tie with the Sox.
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:51 PM ^
Jesus Christ, guys. Communicate with each other. I don't care if you speak proper English, Spanish, or point and grunt at each other. This isn't the first time tonight.
August 22nd, 2011 at 10:15 PM ^
I believe point and grunt is currently being used exclusively by the MSU football team.
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:52 PM ^
Don Kelly?
August 22nd, 2011 at 10:04 PM ^
Papa Grande is just not very good in non-save situations. Strange.
August 22nd, 2011 at 10:49 PM ^
August 22nd, 2011 at 10:10 PM ^
Cleveland has lost.
August 22nd, 2011 at 10:14 PM ^
August 22nd, 2011 at 10:18 PM ^
So assuming we hang on, both Cleveland and the Sox will be 5.5 games back.
EDIT: And there it is. Rod just misspoke, but the Tigers are up 5.5 games on both teams.
August 22nd, 2011 at 10:19 PM ^
August 22nd, 2011 at 10:14 PM ^
...at least it isn't Joyce...
C'mon Grande!
August 22nd, 2011 at 10:16 PM ^
And now the ump wants to squeeze Valverde, after he rammed it up Avila's ass an inning before.
