OT: Tigers vs. Angels

Submitted by MGoBlue96 on
One of the best pitching match-ups of the season in this game. Verlander versus Weaver. Magglio just hit a 2 run homer to put the Tigers up 2-0 and Verlander looks really sharp today.

Not smart on Weaver's part to throw at the head, but I think ti was fairly obvious that he wasn't trying to hit Avila, he was trying to throw it over his head. But that was a bitch move by Guillen. I agree with FhsHockey, act like you've been there before.

isn't your strong suit, because there is a big difference between a big league pitcher having to miss his spot by six inches or two feet in order to drill a guy in the head. One is less likely to occur than the other.

Guillen probably owes JV an apology, but listen: when have the words "classless" and "Carlos Guillen" ever been in the same sentence?  The correct answer being "never", it's pretty safe to assume Weaver was being a cock at some point earlier.  Which the replays showed.  I doubt Guillen was the first player in the game to step outside the code.

Verlander hitting 101 in the 8th inning? That is damn ridiculous. What a beast he is, and I hope he gets the Cy Young this year. His stuff has been unbelievable.

I was rooting for Aybar to get a fastball in the ribs.  Even if PG got ejected, which he probably would've, it's not like there's nobody in the pen that can get Mark Trumbo out somehow.

I was watching the game on MLB Network and they went to the dugout cam after the Angles took the field in the 8th.  Verlander was on the railing yelling at Aybar.  They had to bleep a lot of it but the gist was "Hey Aybar, Yes you F'er, Next time (Points to his ribs), right F'ing there next time buddy, next time!"

Harold Reynolds was loving it and more or less laughed the entire clip.

Guillen exhibits awesomeness, Weaver shows that he's a bitch, JV proves he's the best pitcher in the AL, and the Tigers win.  Nice afternoon.

You do realize that was guillen's second HR of the year and aybar bunted when the angels were only down 3? We can be hopelessly biased about Michigan football, but tigers baseball? Come on now. Remember, since maggs got off the juice and guillen magically lost all of his power, weaver has been in a separate stratosphere than these guys. He was too heated at maggs, but if you're a pair of punching Judy hitters, you don't have the right to stare at homeruns.

has only played 14 games this season right? Both of them have been hitting well since coming back from injury and they have done enough in their career to warrant some respect. Your claim about Ordonez and juice is also based on speculation, and there is no concrete evidence to back that up. Not to mention I am not sure if you understand this or not, but Maggs was not admiring his HR, he wasn't sure if the ball was fair or foul. The way Weaver reacted to that was classless and he showed Maggs up. Guillen was simply giving him a taste of his own medicine and no doubt did that because Weaver did show Maggs up earlier. And I don't care what the circumstances are you don't throw near a guy's head, that is always a classless move.

Guillen just had his buddy's back:

"I don't hit many homers anymore, and I wanted to make sure that it stayed fair," Ordonez said. "After that, he was yelling at me to run faster, and I told him that I'm old -- that's as fast as I run.

"I'm not going to show anyone up. That's not me."

Things calmed down until the seventh, when Guillen's solo homer made it 3-0.

"Magglio has 14 years in the major leagues," said Guillen, one of Ordonez's closest friends. "You don't tell him to run. I respect people when they respect us. If you don't respect us, you don't get it."

against him, only because the game was still close and winnable at that point. On the other hand I would not want to be Guillen the next time he faces Weaver, that will be interesting. Hopefully he has enough class not to throw at his head, but I wouldn't rule it out after what I saw from Weaver today. On another positive note both Cleveland and Chicago are losing at the moment. Edit: Just saw FhsHockey's post, scratch what I said about JV not holding against him. Aybar better wear some armor next time he faces JV, if he doesn't want a broken rib.

Tigers fan need to get over the bunt attempt. Seriously. Yes, I get it's against baseball ettiquette to try and break up a no-no or perfect game, and normally I would agree. But the one thing that trumps baseball ettiquette is winning. The Angels are in the middle of a divison title race, only 2 games behind the Rangers, and they were only down 3-0, still with ample chance to win. Verlander had been unhittabel, literally, to that point. In what world does it make sense for Aybar to try and swing away when he has almost no chance to reach base that way. As an Angel, his job is to win that game, and if bunting helps that cause, then I have no problem with him doing it. And it worked, as it got him on base and helped extend the inning and lead to two runs. Aybar is trying to help his team win, he did what's best for his team, I have no problem with it.

The point is that on top of being one of the top handful of pitchers on the planet, Verlander is also a total red ass once gameday hits.  He'll be looking for Aybar and I suspect Ayabar knows it.  Maybe not this season because JV can't afford to get kicked out of a game with the race so close, but sooner or later...

JV blows. Guillen taunted Weaver. Guillen is a scrub, and has no right to talk. Also if you idiots watched the game had JV not thrown it away he could have gotten Aybar.

If you get MLB Network, they have a live interview with Jim Leyland in their next segment.  Might be a good interview after all that happened today.

Time 4:25 EDT

Edit: Never mind nothing to see there.

I think the Tigers are fittin' to go on a roll in August; Let's see if the Tribe can keep up.

I recall the Tigers sweeping a double header from the Angels in 84 and this song playing on the scoreboard at some point during the games.

I don't mind Weaver jawing at the Tigers, although throwing at Avila's head should earn him a game off.  What I thought was a total bitch move was Aybar bunting to try to break up a no hitter.  Man up and swing the f@#%ing bat.  At least the hit they got later was clean, and not some dribbler or Texas league BS.

Loved everything about that game. Don't think Weaver's reactions were that out of line, although if I were him, I would have probably just tried to back Avila off the plate at the belt, not at the head. He's got good enough control to do so. And man, that temper runs in the family. Loved it when Jeff pitched here, real fiery competitor, Jered is the same way. Don't blame Guillen for hot dogging it either. Just standing up for his teammate, and obviously, got into Weaver's head. Real good baseball game though.

Verlander had another great performance today.  Although this may not be a personal goal of his, if he keeps fielding his position like he did today he won't win the AL Cy Young.  That awful throw to first brought back the terrible memories of the 2006 World Series when he and the rest of our staff forgot how the P.F.P.  This year seems a little different though.  I see the Tigers playing well into the fall this year.  Hopefully they keep it up, especially with a favorable schedule in the 2nd half.
