OT - Tigers v. Angels 7/18 (The thread to break/confirm the curse)

Submitted by MGoBender on

So, there's been a scary trend of Tigers losing when there's a game thread and winning when there isn't.  The Tigers are currently up 5-1, in the 3rd, meaning we can break that trend tonight.  Or, we can confirm it if the Tigers give up a 4 run lead after this thread starts.

Fister tonight and he looks really good so far, sans Pujols homer.  This would make two good starts in a row.

Delmon with a 2-out RBI single early in the game, his average is creeping towards .280.

Scherzer goes tomorrow, meaning we have a very nice shot at 3/4 against the Angels if things continue.  Sets up for a big home series against the Sox, meaning the Tigers could make a huge push towards (if not claiming) first place by Monday.

Funny story - in the first game of this series in the inning when the Angels put up a bunch of runs, I sent a text to my brother that said "Fuck the Angels."  As it sent, I realized that I also sent that text to my wife, father, mother, and mother-in-law.  My dad laughed.  Not so much on the mothers.

but today=Lefty. The 5 or so games before ASG he went on a tear= Lefty

On the year he has 263/293/359/653 ba, obp, slg,ops vs Righties vs

297/311/525/823 against lefties. He's a platoon player. The OBP is still awful as is his plate discipline. Its bearable against lefties, but everyday come on Jimmy.

I turned off last night's game after the third inning. I didn't see this much today and just found out myself, but there was a bomb threat at last night's game. I didn't see it anywhere on the board. Apparently Detroit's finest and some members of the Homeland Security Team inspected the issue, and they are curious to see if it is tied to the threat of the Ambassador Bridge earlier this week.

The crazy part is they didn't notify the fans. I'd be pretty freaked out if I was there and didn't find out til after they were done. That being said, I don't know what they could do to inform the crowd and not incite chaos.

In theory it'd be hard not to create chaos. But I was at a game last year where in the 8th inning there was a fire alarm that went off, and they convinced everyone to slowly make their way out of the stands. And it was done in a very orderly fashion. Just don't flash BOMB on the big screen.

This game is almost a tribute to the unpredictable nature of the season to date. Last night, they can't do anything against someone in their first full season in the majors. Tonight, they are rattling a seasoned veteran. It's great to see Fister having a good outing though as well as contributions from the bottom of the batting order.

A quick standings update:

If the Tigers hold on and the White Sox continue to lose to Boston (down 1-8) then we have:

Tigers 2 GB ChiSox

Tigers 2 GB LAA (for top Wild Card)

Seven teams within 1 game of that second wild card spot.  Looks like the MLB is going to get what they wanted with that.  Important to catch the Sox and not have to deal with that tomfoolery.

I think the biggest thing about this series is that they potentially could take three of four from the Halos WITHOUT using Justin Verlander. That's quite the feat considering the Angels are a solid road team and have been playing quite well the past month.

The series against Chicago will be huge. Friday's matchup of Verlander vs. Sale is going to be a great game. You know Verlander is going to be jacked up.

Yep. Good catch. The Sox have a spot starter going tomorrow to bump Peavy into the Detroit series instead of pitching the finale against Boston tomorrow. Smart move by Ventura. I assumed since Sale pitched Sunday (same day as Verlander), they would be battling head to head. Verlander vs. Peavy is just as solid, though.

The spot starter was the clown who pitched tonight and predictably got his head beat in - the guy tomorrow (Quintana) has been in the rotation since Danks went on the DL two months ago.  I'm not really sure why they didn't junk the plan to give Peavy and Sale an extra day and get them both against the Tigers when it turned out Gavin Floyd was hurt and had to go on the DL, but they stuck with it anyway and trotted out some guy who had no business starting a major league game.  They might have gotten away with it if it were some bad offensive team like the Mariners, but doing it in Fenway?  Yeah, they were pretty much punting tonight as a loss from the get-go.

Good win tonight, I was just hoping to get a series split and now with a chance to take it 3-1 I'll be disappointed if they don't. Max vs Jerome Williams tomorrow afternoon, I think we have the favorable matchup, but that's assuming blue eyed Max shows up. Continue to play good baseball and Eat em up Tigers!

A curse cannot be broken when the thread is started in the middle of a game when we have a substantial lead. We shall try again tomorrow, provided the open thread is started prior to 1:05pm EDT.
