OT- Tigers trade rumors/Castellanos in RF tonight

Submitted by WMUgoblue on

Jon Morosi's has reported that Castellanos is starting in RF tonight for Erie, a possible showcase? I would want a bonefide young star if Dombrowski decided to move him within the next 2 weeks, possible Justin Upton (we'd have to send more prospects though) even though he had previously listed Detroit as one of the teams he wouldn't want to be traded too along with the rest of the AL Central in the 2011.

Theo is still most likely looking for the world for Garza and Barney, so I'd stay away from that, but regardless it's a very important next 19 days for Dombrowski and the Tigers.

You know, it may be that Castellanos has shown a lot and earned a move up with the possibility of bringing him up for the playoff stretch. Things are starting to gel, and the Tigers' budget is getting tight. I think Dombrowski holds off on any trades this year.

I don't know if I've ever heard of a showcase in double-A.  The more reasonable reason is that the Tigers are looking long-term.  Cabrera isn't moving from third anytime soon.  Fielder isn't moving from first anytime soon.  And Castellanos is expediting his rise through the leagues by swinging the freaking bat.  So, if he's to play for the Tigers in the near future, it's going to have to be in the OF.

Any new poster, regardless of the information they bring, can be branded as an Mlive idiot. The blog did get flooded with people ranting and raving about Raburn, calling him the typical Rayburn, Rabum, or Kburn so obviously those people got called out, but many people got lumped into the mlive crowd along with the acutual idiots. I agree with you the content and information is as good as it gets for a Tigers blog, but there is an "in crowd" there that you have to acclimate to.

In fairness, I think it's a lot like MGoBlog. Most of the frequent posters at BYB are very level-headed and don't freak out when things start going bad. So the people who go on there and start freaking out in the first week of May get roasted. Is it due to them disagreeing with the predominant mindset of the blog? Technically yes, but it's mostly due to the fact that the predominant mindset of the blog is to be patient and not overreact in the first few months of the season.

Castellanos was a SS when drafted but has gotten bigger and projects to a corner outfielder, 3B, 1B, or DH.  Might be very hard to put him at 2b, or SS now.

I agree what is happening is that they see him developing quickly and want his bat in the line-up ASAP!  Cabrera has adjusted well to 3B, so they are assessing Castellanos’ potential in the outfield. If it works all is good and the kid will probably be a Sept call up, and slotted in next year.

(The big question is if he doesn’t handle the outfield,… THEN the real debate starts! That is when he may get moved.)

Oh don't get me wrong it's all been said that he'd be a corner outfielder in the show, but everything I've read had said they wouldn't move him to the OF until spring training when they could have multiple position coaches watching and advising his every move.

I just think moving him mid season could slow his progression with the bat, he now has to concentrate on a new position while also concentrate on increasing his bat speed(which is terrific at this point). This just seems odd to me during the middle of the season.

People might be surprised how little of a distraction switching positions is to your performance at the plate.

Nothing changes with your batting routines and really, nothing changes with your fielding routines (just may spend more time on them).  He's a baseball player - he knows what he has to do in left field.  It's just adjusting to judging fly balls and getting his arm used to the different type of throw.

He's stuck behind Cabrera at 3B for the next few years at least.   If he's ready to hit in the bigs find him another spot.  RF is fine with me.

...Please don't trade Castellanos or Perry...We have yet to show that we can compete for the World series, and trading a pitcher who is ready for the Bigs now and a can't miss prospect is not the way for long term success. IF we go  on a true winning streak AND make up ground on the division leader, then I would support these deals. Right now, the Tigers don't look like a playoff contender.

is any kind of showcase for a trade.  If anything it indicates they don't want to trade him.

and, while I'm asking questions, why would anyone trade a bonafide young star for a prospect (non-bonafide)?

I won't be upset if the Tigers stick with the roster they already have.

"He’s recently heard that Detroit will focus on pitching because the team’s decision makers can't find a second baseman they like." - Referring to Ken  Rosenthal, in the MLBTradeRumors.com article

This is something I could believe, but I have a hard time buying  that Castellanos is part of any deal. As others mentioned, if he is going to be with the club sooner rather  than later, then the outfield is the easier "in" with the big  club right now, if you will.

If the Tigers wanted a second baseman,  Quentin made it clear that he would return to San Diego after the season regardless, so I heard, so that and the salary aren't worth it. Scutaro is really in his waning years in terms of production and isn't a long-term solution. Epstein would want Toledo for anyone.

Is it me, or does Garza not even seem like much of an improvement? Ive never understood the hype around him. He has a live arm, but is so inconsistent in his starts. Seems like a headache to me, and the fact that Epstein is asking the world for him makes me scoff.

Henning just had a piece in the News this morning about Castellanos shagging flies in the OF as a result of Cabrera exceeding expectations at 3B.

Hoofbeats!  Must be zebras!

Seriously, this is almost certainly a sign that Detroit thinks that Castellanos will be ready for the big leagues as early as next year, and that they have some confidence that V-Mart will be the DH for at least a couple more years.  That could be a scary 3-4-5-6 with Cabrera and Fielder.  It would be nice to find a 2B that isn't a blackhole to bat between Jackson and Cabrera though.

is perfectly fine to bat 2nd.  hopefully, he is back soon. there is no reason why the 2B has to bat there.  leyland is just being dumb by batting raburn there.

i would much rather the tigers focus on some slick fielding 2B and SS going forward who don't completely stink at the plate (ie. hit at least .250).

I don't think they trade Castellanos, nor do I think they make a big splash at the deadline. They have a surprising amount of pitching depth at Toledo. Turner is just waiting for an opening, so even if they lose one starter, they have their replacement. And honestly, I think they aren't going to give up the farm for a mediocre second basemen. You can hope that Raburn becomes second-half Raburn and that Santiago continues to elevate his numbers the way he has recently.

I don't think they make any moves, especially not a big one.

not wanting to trade Castellanos, please keep him! I love Berry batting in the 2 hole, with his great speed and bunting ability, he's perfect in that spot. Garza can stay a Cubbie as far as I'm concerned.

If Fister can get back to his normal self and w/Max & Porcello getting going lately and Smyly looking like a young Glavine potentially, I like this staff, let's be patient and see what happens.

I like the idea of trying Castellanos in RF too, that might be the right move, no pun intended.

Let's hold off on the Drew Smyly is a young Tom Glavine talk. He's young, he has some skill, but is unproven. Glavine is a 300-game winner with a shot at the Hall of Fame. Smyly has shown some things but is a long way from the next Tom Glavine.

Also, Berry isn't a very good bunter. For every decent bunt he has laid, he has popped up several or fouled off even more. Berry is a contributor. His speed is a weapon of which the Tigers have very little and his defense is an improvement over the rest of the outfield (sans Jackson).

Also, let's not rush to think Castellanos is A: coming up to the big club anytime soon (probably not until September call-ups if at all), and B: going to be the saving grace of the team. He's young. He's not superman. What this really says is how amazing Mike Trout and Bryce Harper have performed. I'd love if Castellanos came up and hit over .300 with some pop, but I'd be delusional to expect it.

Just don't get your hopes up.

Not trying to knock you at all, but Bill Simonson compares Smyly to Glavine, and Simonson is notorious for being waaay over the top and presumptuous.

I like Berry, I really do. His speed is terrific and he deserves a spot on the club, but his hot start won over a lot of minds and people think he is better than he really is. His bat has been quite poor the past couple of weeks. He is 8 for 34 in his past 10 games.

will always be somewhat limited by his inabilty to strike out a lot of hitters. He's only at 12.7 percent over his career, though that has bumped up into the 13 percent range the last two seasons. However, he is really good at not walking people and he's even better than that at getting ground balls (52 percent!!!). His ERA has always generally been slightly below average, partly due to being a ground ball pitcher on a team with poor range in the infield and partly due to his maddening inability to strand as many runners on base as an average pitcher would. That being said, his advanced numbers such as FIP, xFIP, WAR, and SIERA indicate that at the very least, he's probably an average MLB starting pitcher. Those aren't that easy to find and get a hold of.

i like smyly better than porcello too.  porcello annoys the hell out of me.  he's shown no improvement the past 3 years.  maybe a change in scenery is what he needs.  i was hoping the tigers would trade him before the season for a 2B.  now, i hope he just strings together a few good starts so they can trade him by the deadline.

smyly already has pretty good control.  even when he walks guys he's typically around the plate.  i like the glavine comparison (career success aside).  i can see smyly developing into a guy that will consistently hit the corners with his fastball and strike guys out with his decent curve.

i think any of our top AAA starters could easily replace porcello.

In the last 3 years? That is laughabley false. His fip has lowered from 4.77 to 3.83 from 09 to now. Xfip has dropped from 4.27 to 4.01. Siera from 4.48 to 4.13. The home run rate started at 14 percent and has leveled off at 9 percent for the past 3 years. None of these numbers...not a single one...has gone up from a previous year. In addition, the walk rate is down 2 percent from the rookie year. Strikeouts have also seen an increase. Please follow up by showing how he didn't improve and give me a list of our aaa pitchers who would be an upgrade yet are somehow not being called up.

everything I wrote to see the improvement. You wanna know why the era is higher? It's because the tigers went from having a good defense to having an atrocious defense in the past 4 years. Era is so highly variant and it is heavily dependent on factors that the pitcher has zero control of.
