Submitted by WMUgoblue on

It's been a bit since we've had one of these so here's your open thread for tonight's game.

  • FIP: 5.22
  • K/9: 7.69
  • BB/9: 5.06

1. I. Kinsler, 2B D. Pedroia, 2B
2. T. Hunter, RF S. Victorino, RF
3. M. Cabrera, 1B D. Ortiz, DH
4. V. Martinez, DH M. Napoli, 1B
5. D. Kelly, 3B G. Sizemore, LF
6. A. Jackson, CF A. Pierzynski, C
7. J. Martinez, LF X. Bogaerts, SS
8. A. Avila, C B. Holt, 3B
9. A. Romine, SS J. Bradley Jr., CF

Sanchez will make his first start after coming off the DL, the interesting news of the day is that it was Justin Miller that was sent down to clear room for Sanchez, and not Robbie Ray. Apparently Rick Porcello has been having lingering soreness on his left side, and as a preventative caution the Tigers have pushed back his next start, thus giving Ray another chance to showcase his talents.

The Tigers look to make it 11 straight road wins tonight, let's hope they get it!

Believe it or not, or should I say believe defensive metrics or not, but Dirks is actually a superior defender compared to Davis.

Now I agree that Davis has been a valuable asset and should continue to get full time AB's but Dirks is an underrated player in his own right, and can provide some bench help in a platoon role.

1) I dont fear beilein going to the nba simply because i think he loves his job. but if he left i would be devestated. same thing with DD eyeing the commish job, except i do fear this. after beilein, there isnt a guy i respect more in sports. great at what he does, and does it with class and the respect of his peers.

2) i spent the first ~ 2/3 of my life not knowing competitive baseball from the tigers. so i promised myself not to get spoiled once we finally got good. but despite pretty good playoff runs, the last couple seasons were frustrating because we never looked as good on the field as on paper. so funny seeing a team live up to, or more like ecliple expectations.

3) cabrerra had one of the worst month's he's had in detroit this april. less than 3 weeks later hes already  right back near the very top in avg and rbis. unreal.

4) the criticism of the fister trade was silly. dd has earned the benefit of the doubt. but the early returns look like it could be the best trade he's had since the scherzer/jackson trade. also panned, coincidentally. the other amazing move he made was keeping porcello. the guy was the joey harrington of mlb (the worst guy good enough to stick around). so many people wanted him gone. it looks like he might make a run at the cy this year.

could be reason for a posbang thread, but not tonight.  Michigan's gals deserve the spotlight tonight.

But 12 straight road wins for the Tigers right now.  A streak the kind of which you just don't see more than once in a blue moon in any sport.  I know it's a long season, but its just real hard not to get excited about what we're seeing!

Has been amazing! Given the 1st couple weeks where it looked like it was going to be a fun season because the tigers were not going to run away with anything, they're not good enough. Every game will be important. To now, where this could be a fun season because they just might not ever lose more than 1 game in a series. I am looking forward to this summer indeed. Bless you boys!!!

Just like that... Cabrera jumped up in to the top 5 in average and will soon be the RBI leader.  A Triple Crown is not out of reach for this season.

This team is solid.

Last time the Tigers swept a 3-game series at Fenway was 1983.

That's how rare and how special this sweep was.

The Tigers are on the kind of roll we haven't seen in 3 decades---after Friday's victory in game 1 of the just-concluded series, it was said that the then-10 straight road wins was the best road streak for Detroit since that magical '84 season.  What wasn't mentioned was how long that '84 road streak ended up being.  Does anyone out there know?

road wins in 1984, however, they also won their last four road games in 1983 to give them 21 consecutive road wins for '83/'84.

17 road wins in one season is the AL record, 18 is the ML record.  They'll have to keep their emotions in check not to be trapped by Cleveland, and then they have Oakland to tie their own AL record.  It will be tough.  Still, nothing to scoff at with four straight road sweeps, possibly five with the Tribe.

Thirty years ago I had to keep up via AFN and "Stars and Stripes", seeing things live beats the hell out of yesterday's news.

The '14 team has now played 39 games and is a remarkable 27-12 which sounds and is great.

The '84 team was 35-5 through 40 games. If the '14 team wins tonight it would still be 7 games off the pace. That was a very special season.

The '14 team may end up being just as special because of an incredible pitching staff. If the bullpen continues to hold together as I think it will, there is no way for an extended losing streak. They even have Ray as a replacement in case of injury. I liked Fister a lot, but that may turn out to be yet another lopsided trade for the Tigers. I think Ray is going to have a great career here.

reviewed, not because the runner was safe, but because Kelly got the error for Avila's dropped ball.

On a bit of a tangent, MLB needs to clarify rule 6.05 (h)....when Dustin Pedroia hit the ball twice.  I think the umpires screwed up the ruling, if not then MLB will need to clarify the rule.

Of course with neither of those plays making a jot of difference, they'll soon be forgotten.

Keep it going boys!! It felt really good to smoke these Red Sox.

The team got some great props from the national announcers.

Any thoughts about the SS position? Doesn’t seem to be producing at the plate as of late, although the platoon of Romine and Worth are decent enough fielders. If I had to nitpick, that would be my only gripe at the moment.

batting averages are this year (Romine .187,  Worth .250 in only 24 AB's), it's still better than what the 1968 World Champion Tigers had, when starter Ray Oyler batted .135 and backups Tom Matchick @ .203 and Dick Tracewski @ .156 didn't fare much better (I believe Oyler started more than the other two due to being somewhat better defensively).

Romine and Worth combined, for the sabermetricians out there, have a net value of 0 WAR.  Seeing that, we're really not being hurt too badly by their weak sticks.  Romine actually has a halfway decent OBP due to his 8 walks, and he's also added 4 stolen bases, so he has contributed a little at times.

of the 1968 team would mean more if Mickey Stanley hadn't been moved to shortstop for the World Series.

The shortstops they had played well enough to get them to the World Series despite the lack of hitting.
