Game One of the ALCS.
Verlander vs CC
lets go tigers!
HR Delmon Young! 1-0 Tigers
that one barely made it out but ill take it!
Almost looked like it needed/got help from that Geneseo dude in the NYY cap who was WAY too excited to catch a non-Yankees home run ball.
Nice hustle by Jeter. Let's get to Verlander early boys.
Nice hustle by Jeter. Let's get to Verlander early boys.
did anyone else catch the commentator (sorry, i don't know any of the tbs ones) say before the game "verlander and sabathia...two heavyweights going at it"
it just made me giggle a little too much. i hate the yankees so goddamn much (minus curtis granderson). i am nervous for verlander. i was at his last regular season game. maybe i am jinxing him!
and these announcers are generally awful, and yankees slappys.
Catch the line ragging on Jackson for not hustling a strikeout to first that was a foot away in comparison to Jeter's being a ways away.
Come on JV we need your A game tonight. Going up 1-0 on the Yanks would be huge.
All tied up. Let's get a two out hit here Tex.
At least Inge threw it to the proper base there.
He should have gone home with the ball. He had plenty of time to cut down the runner.
got a link
Weird out of all of that the no-hitter for Verlander is technically still alive.
1-1 Tigs top of the 2nd
I AM STILL PISSED INGE IS PLAYING
Inge is fine against LH pitching since he came back up. Betemit still is clearly not 100% so I can live with Inge against LH pitching only.
1. Detroit gets lots of solo home runs
2. Detroit has more innings where a team scores and there are no hits than I have ever seen (always when Verlander is on the mound it seems)
I'm mildly surprised that Don Kelly is playing somewhere and hitting 2nd.
Also, Raburn fielded a ball and didn't cause 5 unearned runs as a result. Progress, I suppose.
A-rod got bailed-out
textbook case of conservative fielding, which is okay...odds are he would have gotten him at home but more prudent to avoid a big first inning
and I'm a Yankee fan - just admire smart baseball
i definitely don't think he should've gone to home
brandon inge just irks me on a lot of different levels
Jeter was more than halfway to home and it would have been a bang-bang play. If Jeter is safe, there would be a runner on 1st and 3rd with 1 out instead of 2 outs. It would have prolong JV's inning. Just take the sure out and move on.
exactly my point...they were right in trading the run to avoid giving up a big first inning with Verlander on the mound
You guys are so thin-skinned. Any comment rooting for the Yankees is flamebait? Really?
Go start a Yankees open thread.
Ilitch is a saint and I bite my thumb at the house of steinbrenner
There's no fucking way we don't get a rain delay soon.
there gonna let this inning go and then stop the game...so this wil basicly be a wasted inning for Detroit.
How long can they let them play in this? It's like the bishop's golfing in Caddyshack.
I'm in NY and they may stop for a while but it won't be called - this is more like intermittent thunderstorms
Oh, make no mistake. They're not raining this out. We'll be here until 4 AM if necessary.
Who wants to bet the game will be delayed before the Yankees bat?
I don't want Verlander to turn an ankle or twist a knee, but they should have called it before the tigers were at bat.
What a complete and utter shock the tarp came out like it did. A fricking wasted inning for the tigers at the plate.
Anyone else think the strike zone seems like it's flucuating a bit?, especially on the outside corner.
CC was coming back with darts after a few outside pitches....JV didn't quite come back that way. So for now I will say it is up to JV to start putting it back in the strike zone or he isn't gonna get the outer part of the plate all night long.
I agree wholeheartedly.
If you show that you are pounding the strike zone, you will get the benefit of the doubt on borderline calls much more often than not. If you're all over the place, you're not going to get the close calls.
easy to throw darts with confidence when you know the pitcher can't see the ball through the rain or catch up to a ball with a slippery bat.
And there's no disadvantage to the pitcher throwing the rain?
Tarp is on.
Roy Orbison could see that coming.
If they're getting the weather we've had, it won't be dry in New York until Columbus Day.
for tomorrow? Ugh..
A double header in the playoffs?
Less than none.
is a big man. That is all.
Hopefully big fella (Miggy) can take CC down.
Hmmm. Verducci said there was a window after this front passed, but there were indeed storms expected shortly after midnight.
Use
and

Who's pumped for Penny vs. AJ Burnett?
he always seems to show up
if the rain delay is long enough we will hear a special interview with every Yankee player and their wives...exciting
Well, the Wings are on FSD. Sure, it's preseason, but it's something.
except when you are living in the D.C. area. I guess I could have went to the Caps game today
NOOOO MOTHER NATURE JUSTIN VERLANDER NEEDED TO PITCH A SOLID GAME 1
i mean, i'm sure yankees fans aren't happy with the fact sabathias start will most likely be wasted
Have you glanced at a radar map? I don't see how this delay is less than "hours"
You are by far the biggest cock-knocker on this board, just go away please.
uhhh, they are saying that after this it just looks like more and more rain.
my point on cc is he looked sharp but also knew in that inning that he could just hammer every ball down the middle as no one could hit it in the rain. CC, in general, is better than Verlander in hammering the strike zone. Sometimes it takes Verlander an inning to find the strike zone and sometimes he strays. This was my concern in the series was that the patient yankees would induce 1 or 2 walks for a given inning and we would have a fielding error (essentially the first inning) and score a run (or where their only hit would be a 3 run homer). That being said, I still feel comfortable with Verlander over CC because CC is prone to the long ball. However, I feel really comfortable about Fister. He always throws strikes and should be a good pitcher against the yankees.
i think it hurts the tigers more (not just because of the lost rain bats in the top of the inning) but because Verlander was considered the one factor that gave us the edge (though I think fister is the big difference factor). I would have to think that anything that might equally reduce the quality of both pitchers is a big advantage to the Yankees or at least should make yankee fans happy.
His team looks really tight. Also, this weather is ridiculous and upsetting.
I'm not saying this will happen, but as a casual baseball fan I am curious. If Verlander is done for the night now, would this be the equivalent of a bullpen guy going an inning and JV could go in maybe game 3?
I think they may call the game since both staffs get really screwed by this. Every option seems bad. Do you want a few innings of verlander tonight and game five. Or just verlander in game 3?
I'd rather just drop this game and restart tomorrow. Both pitchers didn't pitch a lot. It really screws their cycles in any event but probably not as bad that way. Then they can just have a game on Wednesday instead of an off day and make it up that way. It was tied 1-1 and we had 3 bogus at bats ... it should just be restarted.
Reports for more rain throughout the weekend does not look good...
I'd start planning on a rain-out for tonight. The GMs, managers, umpires, and Joe Torre are meeting right now.
TBS doesn't know whether they would start over from scratch or pick up the make-up game where this one left off.
Conventional wisdom would indicate that they would scrap tonight's results altogether and start from scratch, whenever it quits raining and Noah gets the Ark unloaded.
Cal Ripken made a comment that they wouldn't wipe the game clean and start over because of new rules...is this true? Since the game just started and was 1-1 ... i think it is a good candidate for wiping clean. The tigers had an extra half inning but that is BS as it should have been called before those lost at bats.
No game called because of a curfew (Rule 4.12(a)(1)), weather (Rule 4.12(a)(5)), a time limit (Rule 4.12(a)(2)) or with a tied score (Rule 4.12(a)(6)) shall be a suspended game unless it has progressed far enough to have been a regulation game pursuant to Rule 4.10(c).
(a) A regulation game consists of nine innings, unless extended because of a tie score, or shortened (1) because the home team needs none of its half of the ninth inning or only a fraction of it, or (2) because the umpire calls the game. EXCEPTION: National Association leagues may adopt a rule providing that one or both games of a doubleheader shall be seven innings in length. In such games, any of these rules applying to the ninth inning shall apply to the seventh inning.
(b) If the score is tied after nine completed innings play shall continue until (1) the visiting team has scored more total runs than the home team at the end of a completed inning, or (2) the home team scores the winning run in an uncompleted inning.
(c) If a game is called, it is a regulation game:
(1) If five innings have been completed;
(2) If the home team has scored more runs in four or four and a fraction half-innings than the visiting team has scored in five completed half-innings;
(3) If the home team scores one or more runs in its half of the fifth inning to tie the score.
(d) If a regulation game is called with the score tied, it shall become a suspended game. See Rule 4.12.
(e) If a game is called before it has become a regulation game, the umpire shall declare it No Game.
(f) Rain checks will not be honored for any regulation or suspended game which has progressed to or beyond a point of play described in 4.10(c)
Tie game, should not be suspended. (Should be declared "No Game" and stats never happened.)
Does that reflect the changes made this past January? Because they just said the game is resuming tomorrow in the Bottom of the 2nd, tied 1-1.
That is off the official MLB site.
This Axford guy is a pretty impressive sounding dude.
Why do they play playoff baseball on Saturdays. That day is for Michigan football only.
Game 1 will resume tomorrow night, in the bottom of the 2nd.
No way this game is played. NYC is going to be trained by all the rain on the east coast all the way down to DC.
This game should not count in any capacity. They should start out in the 1st tomorrow according to MLB's posted rules (see above).
The forcast doesn't look good for the weekend either. Maybe they should just move the entire series to the D. ;~)
At the rate we're going, game 3 is going to be on Halloween. Either that or we're going to need a ferry to get to 1st base.
Well in a way this is good. Game 2 of the 2006 series was postponed and the Yankees didn't win another game after that.
no...if they call the game now...it's wiped out...not an official game unless 5 innings are played and that includes the post-season
From ESPN chat.
This is bad. Verlander has been neutralized.
Maybe so, but it switches from Verlander potentially pitching twice in this series to Fister potentially pitching twice in this series. Not a bad consolation considering it means their ace only pitches once as well.
Verlander had 25 pitches in one inning and didn't look as in control as one would expect. Perhaps this isn't all bad...
sure he has had lights-out games but he normally has an inning or so that's long like that where the other team doesn't really do anything (except when we field like we did that inning). I agree it is probably not a good sign but I am sure we would have pitched Verlander to 130 and he would have gone 7 at least.
is it suspended or no game? They're saying suspended but apparently the rules say otherwise. What gives?
Apparently there was a revision to the rule 2 years ago that isn't listed directly in the rules on MLB website. In postseason the game is postponed instead of called and will start where it left off.
Any player changes will count as subs with the replaced players not available. I think the Tigers will swap in some lefty bats anyways.
it is hard to see who has an advantage since both teams lose their ace for one game in the series. But I think the matchups bode well for the tigers:
Fister twice? on the road
Scherzer on road
Verlander and Porcello at home
This is a near optimal arrangement for us since Porcello pitches well at home ... Verlander, I believe, will be more effective in a spacious Comerica where he can be more comfortable taking risks with a fast ball (that never phases CC for some reason), and Fister never walks anyone which is gold when you play the yanks.
Or flip back and forth until 4:00
How is it fair that the Tigers had to face the Yankees' ace twice, including once in a driving rainstorm, while the Yankees only had to face Verlander once -- yet it's actually going to count toward the outcome of the game?
Scherzer in that band box sucks. This game should have never started. I call bullshit.
They said the rain caught them by surprise because based on the radar they thought the rain would be light enough to play through.
I agree. Know this messed up the pitching rotation.
Late to the party, but it's only the ALDS, not ALCS just yet.
That is all.....
Too bad they couldn't continue this game due to rain. We will continue this game at 8:37 pm EST tonight.
We will have Doug Fister on the mound tonight. He has been excellent since coming to Detroit.
The game will resume where it is tonight at 8:37 pm EST. The only change is that Doug Fister will be starting, but another great guy!
Sounds like CC and Verlander will now pitch Game 3 Monday, so those of you with tickets just got a massive upgrade in your pitching matchup from Sweaty Freddy vs. Scherzer to the two best pitchers in the AL this season. Nice deal.
This could put JV on track to start game one of the ALCS, should the Tigers get there.
