OT: Tigers Game

Submitted by goblueritzy92 on

Just some thoughts on the game today. Galaraga did great today and if he stays the same in his next few starts, I think people will stop questioning the bottom of the rotation (#5 guy is always gonna be bad.) Also, why did Leyland decide to skip Porcello's next start? The offense is still underperforming, stemming from the last couple games vs. Minny and vs. Oakland. I do think we trade for a bat but not a starting pitcher in light of Galaraga's recent performance.

His ERA is 4.25. Unless it gets above 4.5, he's not doing that bad. Todd Jones almost always had a worse ERA than that and was our closer for years.

And then Rodney does that. Awesome work guys. This bullpen is so, so terrible.

After tonight, his ERA probably will be over 4.50. But anyway, that's not even a very good stat for evaluating relievers. Look at his WHIP. A good setup man shouldn't be over 1.10. Entering tonight, Zumaya's WHIP was 1.62 - and it'll be worse when they update the numbers after the game.

The best stat for evaluating relievers is WHIP. It measures whether they actually put guys on base or not. Zumaya does. He may get some K's here and there but not often enough to offset it. His WHIP is now about 50% worse than what you'd want from a good setup guy.

taking turns pissing their shorts on the mound, and us leaving half of Wayne County on base tonight (bases loaded in the 2nd, 2 on in the 3rd and 6th each and stranding them all), this game has been blown 7 ways 'til Sunday.

Hitting into several double plays over the course of the game hasn't helped either, so can't blame this all on the defense.

Still you have to feel terrible for Galarraga, he deserved the win after the great start. Maybe should've left him in another inning? I don't think he was at 100 pitches yet, although I understand the logic of wanting him to go out on a high note.

Rookie arms wear down during the season. Skip this start and go into the All-star break and he gets a ton of time off to let his arm (and mind) recover from the first half of the year. He has been great this first half and you have to baby him now so he can be that good at the end of the season going into the post season.

Lay off Rodney, he has been good almost very good this year. Has he blown a save this year? He has been better than Jones was last year.

Rodney has been better than Jones, but to say he has been good is a little bit over the top.

Compare Rodney's stats to some of the best closers in baseball:

1. J Nathan 33.1 inngs, 18h, 5r, 5er, 7bb, 43so, 1.35era
2. M Rivera 34.2 inngs, 29h, 11r, 10er, 3bb, 42so, 2.60era
3. J Papelbon 36 inngs, 31h, 7r, 7er, 17bb, 35so, 1.75era
4.B Jenks 28.2 inngs, 24h, 11r, 10er, 6bb, 28so, 3.14era
5. F Rodney 36 inngs, 32h, 17r, 17er, 16bb, 30so, 4.25era.

Leyland will attempt to keep Porcello's innings down all year if possible. In addition to worrying about a flame-out/injury problems this year, he has to worry about next year too. Justin Verlander is a prime example as to the importance of this, as he had an excellent rookie season, but his velocity dropped dramatically during his second season (he generally maxed at 94-95 instead of 99-100) and he crashed during his third season. His inning count was not restricted either year, and he had arm fatigue issues as a result.

this team just flat out needs to find an everyday left fielder. i think mr guillen would at least be ample enough to get the offense kind of in rythm insted of platooning out inleft field. After watching the past week or so, our ever so improved bullpen looks like its the one that needs an upgrade...seems to be the story every year...
