OT- Tigers / Game 2
I'm going to create a user called Luke Skywolverine and upvote every thread that that asshole Darth Wolverine downvotes. Bring balance to the Force.
This is a good use of your life. No joking.
It takes me five minutes everytime to figure out who everyone is talking about.
Typical douchey comment from Darth, I highly doubt there will be a thread for every game but after this weekend and the spring game I don't see anything wrong with game threads during OT season. If you don't like them then don't bother clicking on them.
Well, in years past there's been a thread for damn near every game. And why not? All we got once the Spring game is done is softball threads and threads about the pure joy of summer in Ann Arbor: Dominicks. All good things, but a slow time of the season to be sure.
Maybe I didn't notice last year but I don't recall seeing a thread for every game, I'd probably end up commenting on all of them if there was lol.
I agree with you though, seriously after the spring game there is nothing, so Tigers open threads are a nice way to visit the blog in what is otherwise a quiet time.
Just wait until the FIRE LEYLAND mouthbreathers show up. Then those threads suck.
If that is going to happen we need BRCE back, he was on damn near every tigers thread and said Leyland needed to be fired in pretty much every one.
Bummer, the douche post was deleted. Wanted to get in some neg action.
Anyway, Tigers swung themselves out of a lead-off single in the first inning. Sanchez now trying to work around a first inning baserunner.
Anibal in an early jam.
Scoreless after 1
Miggy and VMart still looking to get off the schnide. I'll bet $5 they both get an extra-base hit this game.
Darth I'm going to create a thread for every game this year. Just to piss you off.
Kevin Correia pitches the Tigers tough apparently, they haven't scored more than 3 runs against him in their past 3 games. Need to get better swings and try to work the count a bit.
FYI, per BYB, the Tigers just acquired Evan Reed (RHP) from Miami. Sounds like a career minor-leaguer, but I suppose he adds some bullpen depth?
Doesn't sound like much but maybe you can inform me why Polanco is batting cleanup for the Marlins, hell they even had Rob Brantly hitting 5th. That franchise is utter garbage, but hey thanks for Miggy/Anibal/Infante.
Yeah, that whole organization is a head scratcher. How you go from "hey, let's build a really nice, really expensive stadium, then sign a bunch of high-profile free agents to fill it," to "TRADE ALL THE PLAYERS!!!!" in one year is beyond me. I'd be pissed if I was a Marlins fan/lived in Miami.
Would you take the over or the under for 35 wins for them this year?
Probably the over, the half-Asstros on the other hand might be a push at 35.
Yeah, the Marlins didn't build that stadium. They strong-armed the city into building to for them.
Basically, the Marlin ownership group is a bunch of crooks.
Is Phil Coke getting the closer opp's?
I am no longer living in MI and am in a FBB league and damn it if I have no idea who is closing for the Tigers.
Officially, it's a closer by committee. I'd say Coke is probably at the top of that committee, but I don't think he'll get every opportunity.
Well, look at Monday's game. They are going to go by matchups. Benoit pitched 4 outs starting in the 8th and Coke took the last 2. I imagine that Coke will close more often than others, but if they see a matchup that they like, I don't think they'll hesitate to pull him for another closer.
It's going to be by committee, so matchup based. If Coke however continues what he did in the post season then he might move to closing full time, but at this moment it's basically going to be Benoit, Coke, and Dotel.
He got yesterdays, though it is probably going to be by committee, so I wouldn't expect him to get all of the opps.
The best thing about the phone ap is that caved comments live on and dont go away. So once I noticed that Darth Wolverine was being his typical a-hole self I immediately went to my phone so I could see what he said.
To be fair however his comments weren't THAT bad - he was simply whining about the possibility of an open thread for each Tigers game. Not quite sure exactly why that warranted getting caved to be honest instead of just letting people downvote him but there you have it.
FYI not sure if someone posted in here already (tried to look but that takes too long), but the Tigers are the free MLB.tv game of the day. Therefore, you don't need a subscription to stream. The catch is you have to be outside of the Detroit TV market.
Does the MLB.tv stream work for the iphone also or just the ipad?
MLB At Bat app works really well on the iPhone, but I don't know if you still get the free game of the day like you do from a desktop. I have a subscription so I can't tell, but I am currently watching the game at work on the desktop and noticed it was the free game today.
Free game of the day does work with MLB AtBat, but a good wireless connection is strongly recommended.
VMart looks like he hasn't played in over a year. He'll come around eventually.
He was hitting just fine in spring training. 1.5 games doesn't really tell you much.
spring training doesn't tell you much either. Remember Sanchez got blown out by the Astros.
Condolences on the Bud Light man... if only it were Hopslam, then you wouldn't need 18, you would only need 4.
Anibal bounced back with another K.
Do they have someone warming up to come in for Sanchez in the 6th?
Downs, got them in order in the 6th.
And that 1-2-3 inning against the big wood of the Twins order shows why.
I still don't understand why the Tigers were supposedly thinking of sending him to Toledo at the end of spring training.
Villarreal gives up a run. 2-1. Minnesota has a guy on second with 2 outs.
Nothing is going to come easy this year when it comes down to our bullpen.
to the bottom of the 9th:
Tigers still lead 2-1, Coke just came in after Benoit walked the Twins' leadoff man in the 9th. Got the first man he faced to hit a harmless fly for out #1, still a man on 1st. Now a 1-2 count on Dozier...
already a blown save two games into the season..
We blew our first save in the opener last year, so that's something.
Need a closer dammit. Get me papa grande
Don't get me Papa Grande
Lead off walks will kill ya, Coke left alot of pitches up in the zone, even the bottom if the Twins order aren't going to miss those.
Mistakes up in the zone are killer. If a P is going to miss it, it has to be low.
Dozier punches a soft line single to right-center, then a long fly by Escobar falls between Dirks and Jackson and game over, Tigers lose.
you managed the bullpen assbackwards. he had benoit face lefties like mauer and morneau (luckily no damage) in the eighth. Then he has coke face two righties in the ninth and loses. coke should have pitched the eighth and benoit or dotel the ninth. this one is on leyland.
Agree completely. He wants to slot guys into 8th and 9th inning spots even though we don't have a closer. He needs to work matchups, but I don't thin he's comfortable doing it.
Benoit has the best numbers of any Tigers pitcher against the M&M boys. And Coke should be able to get Dozier and Escobar out, those 2 are Triple A players. It's one game, on fairness Valverde blew a Dave in the opener last year.
Holy crap autocorrect killed this post.
righties hit almost .400 off coke last year and well over .300 the year before. he's had decent success against lefties the past two years .260ish and .210ish.
meanwhile lefties hit marginally better of benoit than righties the past two years combined. and righties have his under .200 off dotel the past two years.
bullpen by committee means making the right decisions concerning matchups.
Where was this complaining on Monday? These were basically the same exact matchups that we faced on Monday, and Benoit did fine against the lefties(both games) keep in the mind the guy he walked in the 9th was a righty in Plouffe. Yes Coke was awful in the regular season against righties but he was tremendous in the postseason against both sides of the plate. Leyland played the matchups fine, you might have a point in using Dotel but that's all hindsight now yes? Like I said Dozier and Escobar are triple A players, Phil needs to do his job. If you're complaining today then why weren't you complaining Monday I guess is my overall point.
uh, coke came in to face morneau and doumit to end the game monday after benoit pitched to willingham (a righty). yes, coke had a very good 10 IP in the post season last year. but i place much more emphasis on the 200+ IP he's had in relief over his career.
leyland actually played the matchups correctly on monday. he failed today.
RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE UNDEFEATED SEASON RUINED
I can't really watch the Tigers on a daily basis to follow the day-to-day managerial decisions having to do with the batting line-up and bullpen matchups with Leyland. He pisses me off so often that, with baseball, there are too many games for me to get emotionally worked up over his decisions. I will follow all season but not by watching every game closely. I just can't manage the daily ups-and-downs anymore.
Well thats a tough one to swallow. Just keep telling myself we are playing in the final four this weekend!
I have a great idea! Let's spend a zillion dollars on our roster but see what happens if we don't have a closer!
I know it's only the second game, and I assume they have a plan, but good grief!!!
Closers are never worth the money went bought in free agency.
I guess I have to question why Coke would EVER be the choice to close. He seems like the worst relief pitcher the TIgers have. Last year righties hit almost .400 against him. Batters overall hit .324 with an OBP of .375. How is that closer material? That's closer to AAA than closer IMO.
If you won't pony up to go get a closer, why are you running out a guy who has proven than he can't get anyone out? I get that he had a minimal amount of success in an emergency role during the postseason last year. But the guy has NEVER been anything close to lights out.
If we're just going to throw out guys who have never closed, why not Alburquerque? He's been dominant in the short amount of time that he's been healthy for the Tigers. That's more dominance than Coke has had in his entire career. I know he's a bit wild and that is a problem, but no more of a problem than the fact that Coke throws batting practice.
