OT: Tigers: Caputo reporting on 97.1 that Jacob Turner starting today
Caputo is reporting on 97.1 right now that Turner will start today. He cited a tweet from a CBS baseball analyst, but I missed the name [Edit: CBS baseball's Danny Knobler].
Also some other reports buzzing that we're trading Furbush to Seattle for Doug Fister. I'm OK with this move, but I probably overrate Fister.
I don't know a ton about minor league baseball, but I was under the impression that Turner wasn't ready for the bigs. Also, I thought Below had a decent start against the Chox. He left a couple guys on base and got burned for it when he was pulled, but overall it was a decent start. I'm not sure I like the move. I'd rather stick with Below for now. Given that we might get Fister, this could just be a spot start before we get the 5th starter in the rotation.
Snippet below:
CBS Sports' Danny Knobler reports that top prospect Jacob Turner will start for the Tigers Saturday against the Angels. That's what we figured. It was revealed late Friday night that Turner would be promoted, and him taking Duane Below's spot in the rotation was the logical move. A Fister/Furbush trade is awesome just for the names alone.
Jacob Turner
I guess the worst place to F that up was in the title like I did.
I'd edit out my post, but it won't let me.
np
Yeah, apparently he's pitching today, too.
Remember, Verlander made a start or two for the Tigers before his 2006 ROY season.
Career stats on Doug Fister, if this is true. If not, here's his career line anyway:
Like everyone else on the Mariners over the last few years, his won/loss record is not really a good indicator for his level of pitching. ERA, WHIP, and AVE against are not bad. I can't see him being under .500 with the Tigers offense behind him.
This could be a showcase start. We all know they are probably going to move a prospect or two by Sunday. As someone here noted last week, all they have to do is stay away from Atlanta and they'll probably find a mutually beneficial trade.
you need ot showcase a top 20 prospect. This is more of a we need our best pitcher we have to pitch starting. I don't think he is going anywhere because a rotation of Verlander, Scherzer, Porcello, Turner, and a FA next year will give us the best rotation of "young" pitchers in the bigs.
I don't think you have anything to gain or lose with his trade value by starting him today, so probably not a showcase start. Scouts have his minor league numbers and have watched him pitch at that level. He is young and a potential stud, that is his value and nothing he does on the mound today should increase or lower expectations.
that Below is in the trade as well, possibly another minor leaguer, and Furbush. They M's supposed to be sending over a relieft pitcher as well.
That is why Turner is getting the start to day. Not enough time for Fister to come over and take his turn in the rotation, plus I'm not sure when his last start was. Turner is getting called up because he is the best starter we have in the minors and are in a penant race. We need the best possible starter we having pitching this game. He is already on the 40 man roster so this will be a good one game experience for him and maybe a September call up. I know they are already worried about his innings pitched because he has already pitched more innings this year anytime in his career.
His last start was on the 26th. His normal turn in Seattle's rotation would be tomorrow.
Someone who follows baseball more closely help me out. Fister is fine, but isn't Furbush well regarded as a prospect? Plus I've watched him several times and really like his potential and the way he pitches, and a lefty is valuable to boot.
I dont like this trade either. I could see Furbush and Casper Wells blowing up a la Matt Joyce, Edwin Jackson and Doug Fister being a so-so starter for us. Who knows, but it seems we're giving up way too much here
On a similar note, did you see was being rumored as Colorado's asking price for Jimenez?
www.mlbtraderumors.com was saying that the Rockies were asking for possibly Turner, Porcello or Scherzer, and Boesch.
Ridiculous asking price.
Toronto was asking a similar price for Halladay a couple years back, and I thought it was a little high but reasonable. Jimenez is nowhere near that valuable, nor does he have a track record like Halladays. Look at the history of Rockies pitchers and you'll see Jimenez is due for a huge decline. He had one really good half of a season and outside of that has had a couple nice years. I wouldn't sell the farm for that.
Completely agree, but if memory serves, wasn't Toronto asking for less? I thought it was something like Perry and Porcello maybe more for Halladay. Porcello wasn't even established along with Perry. That isn't anywhere close to asking for our top prospect, our 2nd or 3rd pitcher, and our number 3 hitter for a pitcher that is only a slightly better number 2. Granted the discrepencies were probably in each of their contracts because Halladay was a free agent, Halladay is a number one pitcher every day of the week. Jimenez had one really great year and a few great years. I'm not sold for that kind of asking price.
Looks like the deal is done. Tigers get Fister and Pauley.
You have a source?
Not questioning you, I just want to read more about it.
mlbtraderumors.com and Jon Heyman tweeted. Actually Heyman tweeted we got Fister, no that we've got Pauley yet. I'm looking for details too, none yet.
If he can keep the mph improvement and get to 94-95, he could be a good pitcher for us. I thought this was interesting:
http://sodomojo.com/2011/05/31/doug-fister-is-already-very-good-current…
Knobler on twitter. Here's his latest tweet... "To recap on Tigers, Turner starts today, then back to minors. They'll get Fister and Pauley from Sea for Furbush, Wells plus. "
Well, if Turner is called up it is only to showcase him for a prospective trade, which seems to mean that Ubaldo deal may still be alive.
Knobler tweets that it is not a showcase start. Spot start. The asking price on Ubaldo is ridiculous. Not worth it in my opinion.
I agree. I'm not willing to burn down the top half of my farm system for Jiminez.
And if Below is part of this trade, they can't very well start him this afternoon.
And I want to know what the "plus" is that the Tigers are shipping across the country.
And I'm done making single sentence paragraphs for the duration.
Hopefully Below is the plus.
Also, what's wrong with single sentence paragraphing?
Easy to read.
from knobbler on twitter:
Tigers are also expected to send AA 3B Francisco Martinez to Sea in Fister-Pauley deal. Martinez is a top prospect. #tradedeadline
Never a good idea to trade the top half of your farm system when you don't have a bottom half.
This trade is best possible scenario for me, I was not feeling real good about trading JT
Depending on who the plus is, I think I'm perfectly ok with this deal. I think this is the best case scenario low cost high reward possibility. We gave up scraps if this works out. If not, I'm not sure those guys we gave up would have made a huge impact anyway.
I think the bigger story is that 97.1 still think it's a good idea to employ Pat Caputo. I remember in the late '90s thinking his opinions being shallow and that he had a voice for newspaper writing. I figured his radio career was over after wdfn finally got rid of him.
Well, they can put him on any hour of the day and he'll be there, and he works cheap. It only costs them a bale of hay and a couple buckets of oats per shift.
I listen to Foster and Valenti even though I'm not that big of a fan, for obvious reasons, but after they go off the air, Caputo is even more unbearable than Valenti.
He acts like he knows everything yet says the dumbest things. Treats callers like crap. Granted the callers are mostly idiots, but an idiot treating idiots poorly seems like terrible radio.
Flat out. Some radio guys are annying but at least have somnething on the ball. But Caputo is just not bright.
They don't call Caputo "The Book" for nothing, youi haters need to quit hating. Caputo rules!! Pat knows everything. I can actually listen to Caputo and Fithian, they're a lovable couple. Oh shit, probably gonna take heat for calling them a couple.
This is a good trade for the Tigers. Especially because we didn't have to include Turner or Nick C. in the deal. I really didn't want to give up our two brightest prospects for anyone. What the Rockies were asking for Jiminez is flat out ridiculous. I'm not sure I would trade Turner-Porcello-Boesch for King Felix! Fister doesn't have the greatest win loss stats for Seattle 3-12, but honestly, how can you win with such a poor team. He does have a 3.33 era, which is pretty good by all accounts. I'm happy we solitified our 3rd or 4th starter in the rotation. Hopefully, Porcello continues to pitch like he did last night and Brad Penny does a little better the remainder of the season. Good work Dave Dombrowski and hopefully this trade sparks a run!
Tigers are trying to "get a reliever other than Brandon League" also.
They got one. David Pauley.
Weird, I clicked this comment through like 20 minutes ago and now it shows up.
Not a fan of this deal at all.
Why not? We picked up a decent starter, a reliever that's having a nice year, they're under team control for a while (Fister until 2015), and gave away two pitchers that may or may not pan out. We acquired a 2 "certains" for 2 "maybes", plus an outfielder that isn't playing in the majors everyday. We also didn't have to wreck the farm system to do so, either. We've got more pitching on the way, and outfielders are a lot easier to get than starting pitching.
Wrecking the farm system got us Miguel Cabrera. Wrecking it again would have gotten us another ace at the top of the rotation who was also under control for the next few years and would have put us into contention for a World Series this year. Top prospects are becoming very overrated when making deals, especially for prime young (and PROVEN) talents like Jimenez. Not that I expected us to get him anyways.
Fister's a GB pitcher. Our infield lacks range. He's leaving arguably the best pitchers park in baseball to one that sits somewhere in the middle, if not more towards the top for hitters. His HR/FB ratio is less than half the league average. I realize his FIP is solid and a lot of his stats pan out, but you can't understate the difference between pitching in Seattle and Detroit.
The good news is; whatever park Fister pitches in, the opposing pitcher will be pitching in the same park. So we got that going for us and Jacob Turner to boot. Go Dombrowski
Maybe I'm alone on this one, but I don't consider him "proven". He had one half of one good year and comes from an organization that is renoun for having pitchers burn out after 3 years of full work. His current season isn't that much better than the one Coke was having.
FIP of over a run less than his current ERA with a road ERA of like 2.75 if I'm not mistaken. Again, Coors is a tough park to pitch in. My main concern with Jimenez is the fact that his fastball has lost almost 3 MPH on average from last year.
Ubaldo would have been nice... but there's no way he was worth Turner AND one of Scherzer or Porcello. Fister is a good pickup for a way lower price
Right now as it stands we get Fister and Pauley. They receive Wells, Furbush, and Below. IF there is anymore plus I might still be on board. Fister is under club control through 2014. Below and Furbush were doing well in the minors but they weren't exactly highley regarded. Could they have panned out eventually? Sure. Fister is good now though. I don't think Wells really had a spot either. I liked him though.
Even next year our outfield starts with Jackson, Boesch and someone else. Probably not wells. Dirks? Maybe a free agent?
I'm not overly concerned about next year's outfield. You can always sign a corner outfielder. There's a helluva lot more OF's available than quality starting pitchers, and probably for a lot less money, too.
Where did you hear Below is in the deal? I just saw that Francisco Martinez is the "plus."
Rumored on Below? And you beat me with the Martinez update.
Fransisco Martinez 3b prospect from double A also rumored to be included. That stings a little, but he is just a prospect.
