Still cannot believe that Verlander isnt in the 'pen.. its the season. No reason to hold back.
You have to trust your relievers. Verlander has been great, but it's not like he threw a perfect game vs. the Yankees last time as well. If you throw Verlander tonight, you likely lose the ALCS anyway without Verlander for Game 1. When the end goal is the World Series, losing in the ALDS = losing in the ALCS.
I say you save him so he can throw games 1, 4, and 7 in the ALCS to win the series and go to the World Series.
EDIT: Not saying this is the "right" answer, but I'm sure this is the train of thought that Leyland is thinking. I trust a guy like Leyland in this situation.
I would take a 90% JV over anyone in the pen. And who cares who starts Game 1 of the next series. JV would max out at 2 starts regardless.
You want your ace to throw Game 1 because of the off days in the series. Whoever starts Game 1 can throw Game 4 and Game 7 on three days rest each. That and the Rangers will be throwing their ace Game 1 due to the time off. Rangers' #1 pitching three times gives them the advantage over throwing JV twice in games 2 and 5.
Moreover, if Detroit is down in the game, throwing Verlander won't help as you need offensive production for pitcher support. Plus if you have a big lead (3+runs in innings 8 or 9), I wouldn't waste Verlander in the next series to close. Additionally, JV hasn't ever pitched from the pen and that's different than starting the game.
You and I must have different theologies I suppose, but I think saving Verlander is the better long term decision.
normally, i agree with your 1st paragraph. unfortuneately, leyland doesn't believe in that philosophy.
Nova has a W-L record of 16-4. That scares me.
I care more about ERA and WHIP than how many wins/losses a SP has.
Let's not have this thread turn into a sabremetrics debate.
Fister would have 20+ wins combining his era and the yankees' offense
Anyone know of a link to the stream? I'm closing up in Ugo's in Pierpont and want to be able to watch it on my computer in the kitchen.
Nova was in aaa for half the season. We'll see if he crumbled under the pressure.
Back to back hrs is a good sign
EDIT: DELMON YOUNG!!
Yeah!!!, bombs away
Back to Back
Back to Back!!!!
Yeah! bombs away!!!! *not double post!!
ps, I could do this all night
BACK 2 BACK!
Cabrera was swinging for the HR there too
what a great start.
I predict if Fister throws a shutout......Tigers will win.
Tigs are free swinging tonight. I saw a lot of swings in those at bats. Lets go Fister!
Nice Sucker Punch
Beautiful, quick 1-2-3 inning for Fister. Let's work Nova now and make him throw some pitches.
Would be nice to win this big and lose these butterfly's in my stomach.
Either way...the play-offs in any sport are exciting, but so much more when its our teams involved.
Lets get in Nova's head
I'm feeling an Avila hr here.
to leave runs like that out there.
It's clear to see why Nova has had a ton of success. That slider is pretty nasty. First time through the ABs we struggled were b/c of that slider. When we've attacked the fastball good things have happened. Gotta look for that the next couple innings and knock Nova out of the game.
if we can get 5 runs tonight, we win. We have 40% of that.
I think Fister and the pen can hold them to less than 5.
Obviously i really have no friggin idea......
3rd base with less than 2, the Tigers love to leave guys on in that situation. At least we're still getting hits, but we will need more than 2 runs to win this one (or will we?).
swung and missed a lot already. But when they have made contact they have pounded the ball.
If they keep that up...we will be golden tonight.
Who else is done with the "million miles away yeeeeeeeheeeeheeee" song?
im starting a count on how many times written in the stars is played
I have no idea why.
Kelly and Young.
he's painting those corners. even tex's double was a solid change-up low and away.
Is it just me or is there an awful lot of crying from the Yankees over called strikes that appear to be actual strikes?
Don't know what they are crying about... It's been a tight strike zone, especially to lefties on the inside.
Not just you. It doesn't compute for whiny bastards in New York that some team from the other side of the Hudson somewhere (it's all the same to them) could have a chance at beating their mighty empire, so it is always blue's fault.
new pitcher already for the Yanks.
Bye bye nova... weird
AJ has killed us this series.
Lead-off men simply have to make more contact than he does. He is an almost automatic out right now.
when we get to the next series (and we will), hopefully leyland bats him last against righties (maybe lead off kelly).
Relax. He's been on 5 times in the series. Not great, but he's not "killing us." On the other hand, Avila, who has had ABs with RISP many times, is now 0-13.
I'm not in the mood to get all "ef this guy" while we're leading an elimination game about guys who have worked their ass off and done a great job all year, but if you're going to pick someone to be pissed at, I don't know if Jackson is the guy.
seems to be attacking the zone. what happened to swinging at the first pitch?
Damn....Delmon hit that one too hard for his own good.
is a whopping 1 for 13....yea, he's tearing it up.
Like it or not, what you did to GET to the post-season no longer matters.
What you do IN the post season does.
AJ is my 2nd favorite player behind Miguel...but that does not make him immune from a negative comment.
And A-Rod is a choke artist in the playoffs. We don't need to get all pissed about a guy struggling with the bat, especially when we're up 2-0. There's always going to be at least one person in the lineup that is slumping. It's baseball - it's a game where a 30% success rate makes you an elite player.
And it's pointless to get into a "AJ is not a lead-off hitter" debate right now. We are what we are and he is what he is. We're not going to make a mid-series trade for super-duper traditional lead-off guy.
He always gets out of his jams, just like the big Fist just did.
Wooo, crisis 1 averted.
Magglio is swinging a nice bat tonight.
Man this is going to be a weird game. It'd be nice to have the Yankees bullpen and have the luxury of going to matchup pitching in the fourth inning when needed.
I'd say it's about time for Avila's first post-season hit.
There you go, you get what you ask for!
I want a Santiago double now!
I think your constant negging of Yankees fans keeps them away ...
might be trying to force Leyland to start taking guys out based on pitching match-ups.
So far Jim has not bit on it....
God I hope we crush Sabathia. I say bring him on.
My thoughts exactly.
Here comes C.C
I CAN HAZ DOUBLE PLAY PLZ?
Ron Darling is killing me with his comments. I figured a former Met would hate the Yanks. Maybe he always wanted to play for them or something.
appears to be desperately looking for a HBP.
I thought the same thing
Get Scherzer up in the pen?
EDIT: OMGZ I TOLDZ YOU SO!!!!
Double play ppllleeeeeaaassee
either Coke nor Scherzer to throw stikes if they come in.
Scherzer+2 runs versus Sebathia? I think we're gonna need a bigger boat
Wow, my first ever double post!
Thank god. Anyone know if I can use the Defibrillator more than once without recharging?
right now. . .
that defib. over my way when you are done!
We need more runs!!!!
*I am actually a pretty big fan of CC*
AJAX!!! Get him over Kelly...
Great hustle by Jackson there. Love seeing his head still inthe game even with his struggles at the plate.
Kelly Bunt now
Nice AJ, it's about time!
That was bad...
anyone got another stream?
damn... looking right now
make them pay Victor.
this is why you were signed - to make teams pay for walking cabrera.
"victor is batting .345 after a walk to cabrera, so he has come through more often than not". huh? i didn't realize .345 > 50%.
But sure is funny to read/hear.
Holy, shit - he heard you! Keep saying things
might just be the decider here.
Both teams have done it big time so far.
for whatever reason in the postseason we've struggled much more with advancing runners than in the regular season, i dont know if its the atmosphere or what but nobody can seem to drop the sac bunt
is flat-out BIG TIME!!
So freaking clutch all year.
My gosh, TBS is already making excuses for the Yankees. I highly doubt Nova had a strained forearm.
girardi was taking himself off the hook should the decision backfire.
Which TBS later confirmed to be a strained forearm. I just find it hard to believe that the camera crew were able to catch Cabrera's "WTF" face when he saw they took Nova out, but they couldn't get Nova talking to the trainers on camera.
Smells like fish...
love to see Maggs go deep.
Does CC have the biggest pair of pants in the world or just baseball?
Inge to third, Kelly to right. Just a hunch.
but it's maybe a tad too soon.
V-Mart and Peralta have been delivering all season long -- and that was a big-time hit right there. MOAR RUNS PLEASE!
way to come through men!
this is working as of right now
to see Fister get in a groove now and mow them down for a couple innings.
who said that quote you have?
it was just some random dude on a sparty message board after msu's loss to nd.
Effing Cano, I'm learning to hate him
That grandy put my hate for him way over the top.
F*ck you Cano
that was an absolute meatball to cano. by far fister's worst pitch of the night.
1-Run HR by Cano.
Score is 3-1 Tigers end of 5th
We weren't gonna hold them scoreless, anyway...the damage is mitigated for now, and hopefully we proceed to put a few more up.
It was good to get A-Rod out right away. Don't let their momentum carry.
Even the announcers are admitting that the TBS pitch track thing sucks.
Who is coming in next for the Tigers? Scherzer or Coke?
I would guess Coke with Teixeira and Swisher due up
they are both switch hitters
both are switch hitters. so is posada. but i agree. i would probably bring in coke just to make those guys bat righty.
all these announcers do is talk about how the Yankees can get back into it.
All Yankees all the time.....
Is there a 'everybody gotta play' rule I'm not aware of in this game?
Yep, the Yanks finally decided to put the little league rules in effect for this little league ballpark. It was only a matter of time.
I know its been mentioned 100 times but can they be more biased? Even Smoltz a homer is on board.
clip on tie alert
to still be playing baseball next week with some nice weather still here.
Have left a ton of runners on base. Hopefully it doesn't come back to bite them in the ass.
I know... it's killed me a little each time we've left someone in scoring position.
I would like to personally thank you from the bottom of my heart for handing my beloved Detroit Tigers game 5 of the ALDS. Seriously, I have met 13 year old' hopped up on meth that would have more patience with the Yankees pitching staff. Apparently, Brian Cashman can by you any pitcher in baseball, but he still can buy you a clue.
Man, Santiago is averaging a GIDP per game.
Wouldn't this be a great spot for 2 innings from JV? Sigh.
If I were to pitch JV two innings, I would make it 8 and 9, even with Valverde in the pen. But it is probably a moot point unless we extra innings
NO it wouldn't. This is not MLB The Show. This is real life. When we pull this game out we will want to have Verlander in a condition to pitch for the ALCS and the WS. Joe Girardi is an idiot. HE's going to kill all of his pitchers arms.
I would've kept Max for the next round. Gotta use your beat now to get there. But moot now - great job by Scherzer!
I hope he pitches the 7th as well, after we get a couple insurance runs
where the hell is leyland going!
take a piss
slow to realize. . .
and that is what scares me the most about Scherzer and Coke.
Valverde has an issue with them too sometimes.
this is what makes playoff baseball so great. we have mgrs doing things they wouldn't do all year; pulling pitchers early, bringing in ace's in the mid innings, pins and needles on every pitch...
Amen. This and playoff hockey make me have to take lots of tums.
back in the day, pitchers would get fined in the kangaroo court for giving up 0-2 hits. maybe they should start doing that again.
thread yet. /s
Cabrera is as big as an offensive lineman and also on the verge of a holding call on Posada NNTP
Nice job by scherzer... is he gonna be back for the 7th?
My money is on Coke.
Scherzer's still going. Get it going Max!
1/3 rd to go, how are mi nails going to hold until the WS?
Tigers batters strike out waaaay too much.
I can't take this stress anymore, man.
just score 2 more runs, i think we would have this in the bag.
I so badly want to see Verlander pitch again this season.
Time to get nervous again.
Way OT but if you watch the Notre Dame time lapse video on the main board you can see the one and only Lloyd Brady at about 2:42
time to stretch myself over to the fridge for another cold one
Three shots of Jameson and 4 beers already this game... and we haven't even got to Valverde yet.
SEVENTH INNING STRETCH!!!
GOD BLESS AMERICA! GO TIGERS!
not a pulled oblique. and why not dirks? i think he's better defensively than raburn.
I would have preferred Dirks as well, I don't think Dirks will be pinch hitting anytime soon
Cameras catch Delmon Young with his injury, but can't get any footage of Nova.
Raeburn and his faithfull glove "Clank" are in the game.
How can these guys think Raburn is an improvement defensively over Young?
The only thing they know about is the yankees
That one was Inge's ball
Inge needs to take that ball. Mental mistake.
Inge has to cut that ball off.
"Scherzer hasn't pitched out of the bullpen since August 31, two thousand......and - eight."
Uhhhh that was three years ago, I am not impressed by that stat as the tone of voice seemed to think I should be.
Man, I'd love to see a closeup of his face if the Tigs win this game. Watching him whif on papa grande a few days ago was excellent.
Grandy at the plate as the tying run. If I see Coke I'm gonna start chugging.
You can't have a band-aid on your face if you're a pitcher?
What a d bag. He obviously has a cut on his face.
Seriously? They made him take off a band-aid?
I hate the 7th....
is not good.
I'm running out of fingernails to chew...
I have none left :(
Come on Benoit...
If the Yanks pull this one out, (knock on wood) give Granderson the MVP.
Maybe we should have got him the live chicken?
Fucking effing luck.... come on, one more out
time for a double play. running short of booze.
Leyland will be second-guessed for not bringing in Coke to pitch against all these lefties if the game is lost.
I feel a double play
I'll go make a sandwich....
The guy makes me squirm eevry appearance.
Still not as much as Papa Grande though.
Todd Jones was the worst at that.
is totally out of it. this is not good.
I've got butterflies in my stomach the size of helicopters.
Clutch! One more out...
Whew. Took an hour but worth every second. One more JB
HUGE strikeout there! One more out, come on boys.
Brandon Inge if we make it out of this without giving up a run, I pray to everything that you never see the field again.
What did Inge do?
God I hate Tigers fans.
I can't hold my breath any longer .... =S
I'm going to be sick...
Can't believe Benoit walked a fucking run in.
egads. must. get. third. out.
He gets the tough out (to make it two outs) and then walks one in.
Why the hell am I nervous? Jeez, it's a baseball game that I have no personal connection to.
I'm nervous as hell and I don't even care for baseball that much...
they are leaning over the plate. high and tight please.
Argh... I'm losing life expectancy
holy shit that was the third strike to Swisher!
EDIT: Glad he got him on the next pitch because the one before was pretty damn close
SWISHERS GONNA SWISH!!!
Yess!!!! I still hate you fucking 7th, please, no more bumps
Benoit HATES buckeyes
Haha nice trivia
i wish state farm was here with a bit of insurance...
effing Buckeye! HA!
We need some insurance runs in a bad way.
I think we're gonna need about 13 runs minimum this go-round for insurance.
Lets light up Robertson!!!
score some more.
No football game, regardless of who we are playing, makes me this antsy for this fucking long.
I was this antsy for this long during last years game vs Illinios
I had completely forgotten how tense playoff baseball can be.
Detroit absolutely must get an insurance run or two. I just don't think they can hold the Yankees off the board for the next two innings.
have really done a job on Miggy.
Yankees cmon 6 pitchers used thru 8, hopefully yankees win
run to first base on balls that are obviously foul?
I have never understood this...
ugh- my stomach's turning
Can this inning go easy? I can't afford to lower my life expectancy another 10 years.
was brutal to watch.
But i did not get seriously antsy till the 4th.
This game has been tight from the git-go.
those back to back home runs feel like a week ago
take 3 or 4 hours to complete.
Ours are over in a pico second it seems.
But time is our friend here
Wow finally got Posada out. This game is killing me.
Quote of the night from a drunk Yankees fan: "Hey Cabrera...Nice haircut!"
I sure hope Cabrera isn't psyched out by that guy making fun of his haircut
They made Benoit take off a band-aid, and it damn near cost us the lead.
Are the guys clapping behind the plate coming thru as loud for y'all as they are for me? I've got nothing but this constant fap-fap-fap-fap-fap invading my living room...
Why do they have random clapping guy mic'd up? What gives TBS?
I hate this Gardner guy, he reminds me of a baseball version of Aaron Craft.
He's got some serious tinyface. Looks like an Accutane baby.
I hate him so much I needed two posts to show it.
the hate grows after that slapshot
looks a wreck.
This is hard on an old man.
I just died.
Why can't this game end already? I swear I was about to puke my heart out
My heart stopped for a sec. But I'm feeling much better now.
Not a good sign when I'm actually excited for Papa Grande. This game has been a good one so far though. A true battle.
I need a hug...three more outs...canna fella get another run here!?
God, that was hit right toward the Jeffrey Maier spot.
That spot is in the parking garage across the street now.
without me turning off the tv.
has to go thru the heart of the Yankees order in the 9th.
Please....score a couple runs...
Viagra commercial: "Ask your doctor if your heart is healthy enough for sex."
RIGHT NOW IT AIN'T IT CAN'T EVEN HANDLE A GOOD BONER RIGHT NOW. Tigers' bullpen: usually gets the job done, never makes it pretty.
Best post of the night!
My heart cannot take this game.
I think I'm gonna be sick.
Any chance the bottom half of the ninth is this quick and easy?
Tiger bats look like they just want to get it over with, whatever "it" is.
is cowering in fear.
Dear Lord, Mariano. So glad we never faced him with a Yankees lead.
EDIT: Though, admittedly, he didn't really face a murderers row there.
The worst 1/2 inning I've seen all year.
Here we go ladies.....
Just get those 3 easy outs.
OK, three more outs. Valverde, I swear, if you can save this game I will never complain about how unnecessarily dramatic you make your outings.
I'm saving my 100th post for if Detroit wins.
so you can get the silly email from Brian.
to face grandy and cano...just kidding.
Lose yourself in the music the moment you own it you better never let it go.....you only got one shot.....
All right it is Potato Time. PLEEEEEZ just get three ground outs to second plz plz plz.
bottom of the ninth at Yankee stadium with the season in the balance. Duff me dammit!
oh goodness here we go the season is on the line right here and the roller coaster is on the mound
no extra innings.
I am 53 for Gods sake and i want to see 54.
Valverde has been decent this year.
On SI.com they are saying that Detroit has already won the game. The game is currently still being played.
Si is credible. Cool, bring on texas
Saw it too and all I could think was dont let this be a Dewey Beats Truman kind of deal.
