OT: Tigers acquire SS Alex Gonzalez
Just a couple days after trading for Angels SS/Utility man Andrew Romine to compete in a SS platoon, the Tigers have acquired veteran SS Alex Gonzalez. Tigers traded away Steve Lombardozzi, who was acquired in the Fister trade.
Looks like the SS position in now in the hands of the 37-year old, 15 year veteran, and Romine will handle utility duties at 2B, SS and 3B. Bad news for Danny Worth fans.

You have a point there.

This is a good move unlike the Fister move which I still haven't figured out.
He has been making moves like a drunk ever since the Fister deal. Someone needs to check his BAC. Even if Gonzalez was still able to play defense, which he probably can't his OBP has always been terrible. He's got some power, but his OBP is consistently under 300. And injuries have hurt his D over the past few seasons. Maybe he is back to 100% and will be adequate defensively. I never really cared about Lombardozzi other than the fact that he was one of the pieces in the utterly ridiculous fleecing Dombrowski took for Fister.
Why don't I see the words "Chris Illitch" anywhere in this thread?
His father is deathly ill, he is calling the shots and he is going to ruin the organization unless the family sells soon. The writing is on the wall - Chris is very cheap. Unlike Mike, he's not a baseball fan and does not give a shit about how loyal Tiger fans have been.
And few people actually say the Tigers play when they were bad. For the most pat fan loyatly is encumbent on winning.
I'm no lover of the Illitches, but I just think it is a bit hasty to be judging anyone.
The truth is that while the Illitches have have big money they do not have huge money like a Paul Allen who can spend oodles of cash on two professionalf franchises for a long time. The Illitches will probably end up selling the Tigers as it is easier to compete for titles in hockey at a much lower cost than baseall. The Tigers were Mike Illitch's pet. He was a baseball player in his youth. So he had that deep love for the game and the Tigers. Once he is gone I think the family will sell the Tigers.
Hopefully not to a Tom Gores-type owner.
3 million fans passed through the gates last year in a very tough economy. That's loyalty.
It is also loyalty on the part of Mike that he was willing to take small losses. Chris is just a typically greedy American sports owner.
The Fister trade was universally called the worst trade of this MLB off-season. Totally inexplicable.
I'd say it was the worse trade of the last several off-seasons probably. It's no where near as bad as the fleecing DD gave Miami when we got Cabrera though. Glad we were on the other end of that.
It is pretty obvious that Dombrowski massively undervalued Fister for some inexplicable reason. Probably because he doesn't throw hard. Dombrowski seems overly enamored with velocity sometimes.
They did not increase payroll again. The money saved from the Fielder-Kinsler trade was spent on Joe Nathan and basically nothing else.
The Tigers offering Scherzer $24 million a year depends on who you believe.
This year the SS position may make us long for the days of Guillen, and JP. Also, what a bad year to let Santiago go.
...have so much youth and speed in their lineup, they could use a slow, old veteran to solidify the clubhouse.
Wait. What?
all that speed is good at running from the dugout to the parking lot after games. Because none of it besides Kinsler can actually get on base.
options were out there that wouldn't cost the Tigers a prospect they would like to keep or a draft pick they are going to need?
that there were any. I hate a lot of the moves Dombrowski has made recently. Dunno that this one makes me mad really other than the fact that it reminds of the Fister deal. At least it ends the delusions by some that Lombardozzi was somehow valuable.
