OT: Tiger Woods Divorce Settlement: $750 Million
This just hit the wire ... and I about hit the floor.

Wow, I wonder if Elin likes overweight 20 somethings who aren't that attractive.
... sign me up. She can clearly afford two and I will become anything she wants.
For that much money, I'D have married Tiger.
I wish I were lucky enough to get a divorce.
You know there are kids involved in the divorce, correct?
pittsburgh sucks
I concur
...you have the price tag for Tiger's years of serial philandering. That's a staggering sum.
Elin has to keep quiet, eh? I'm sure she's crushed she won't get to go on Oprah to tell her tale of woe while she hawks a tell all.
I wonder what he really wants her to remain quiet about. It can't be just the cheating with women, because she probably doesn't know all that much and most of it is already out.
i wondered that exact same thing
Maybe he just doesn't want her to talk publicly about the divorce period to put an end to it all (publicly.)
Sure, it will keep her from talking, but it won't put an end to this. How many women are out there with their own story to tell? And who else -- bodyguards, others?
Tiger's a freak, but like a really awkward dorky freak. I wouldn't be that surprised if he was up to some real kooky shit.
I completely agree. And to be honest I think it's awesome.
But the money is to keep her from talking to Oprah about how most of "It" was all the way in while he was cheating.
Actions speak louder then words...
Having this number bouncing around in your head the past couple months would affect anyone's golf game.
If I was Tiger....unless I had a graveyard of money grubbing whores in my backyard, I would have kept my $750 million and told her to say 'hi' to Oprah for me.
...then you must believe Antonio Bass is coming back to play QB.
Speaking of Antonio, I actually got to speak to his Dad recently. He seems to be doing great and his little brother is looking to be a stud too!
As a bit of financial perspective, Madonna is estimated to be worth $350-$400 million and Michael Jordan is estimated to be worth $400-$500 million. So, Elin can just about buy them both!
ho...ly...shit.... That is staggering. I mean he's made around a billion probably through endorsements and winnings but, wow. That is incredible. I can't even wrap my head around even having that much money ever. And that is money he has to give up! He's gotta be pretty pissed (understatement of the century) that he loses out on soo much that more athletes than not are involved in themselves. That is obviously not me endorsing what he did, it's just stating fact.
Shit, he's already won $700K in 5 events hacking it up. Finish the year with around $1.7-3 Million and 10X that in off course revenue.
The man is a money-making machine.
The man WAS a money making machine.
Going from 1.7 Billion to 1.7 Million isn't exactly "just fine."
To paraphrase Chris Rock re: O.J. Simpson:
"If you're makin' $10million and your wife gets half you're fine. You can still eat. Now if you're making thirty thousand and she wants half you might have to kill her"
... but I understand."
Isn't peanuts. Plus, that's just on-course money. Top-tier PGA Tour pros pay their taxes with their tournament winnings.
A single man could live pretty well off that. Plus if he gets his game back together none of this will matter and he'll be back to $80+M a year.
I don't know. Most of his income wasn't from prize money, it was from endorsements, and I think those deals have taken a bit of a hit as a result of his shenanigans.
If he wasn't smart enough to get a pre-nuptuial agreement, then he deserves to lose 750 million. If you have that kind of money and don't get one you're just not that bright.
My understanding is that, under the prenup, Elin would have gotten something like $20 million. But prenups often have clauses that make things much more expensive in the case of infidelity -- not this expensive, but more than the base number of $20 million.
The original prenup was apparently a sliding scale and the $20 million was after 10 years of marriage. They were married in 2004. If the $750 million is correct, she must have some serious leverage on him.
Even if they did have a prenup: 1) that doesn't necessarily include child support; and 2) that doesn't mean the terms couldn't be negotiated if Tiger truly was concerned about confidentiality, as is being reported.
Maybe this figure is inclusive of all child-support and there is some sort of estate planning benefit to doing it this way. It might be cheaper after-tax to transfer a large sum of wealth to the kids now as part of this settlement than pay monthly child support until the kids are 18 and then transfer the remainder of Tiger's wealth to the kids upon his death. Upon death, the transfer would be subject to massive estate taxes (over 50% in the U.S. and possibly even higher in Sweden).
Those were some expensive pieces of ass.
And my guess is Bill Gates is not cheating on his wife.
I've heard that he and Warren Buffet love to go clubbing in Omaha after a rousing session of backgammon, sometimes staying out past 11:30.
... Not!
I'll flat out say this isn't true. TMZ breaks stories like this, while the Examiner makes them up.
Lets assume he was unfaithful during his short marriage a total of 75 times. That works out to costing him $10 million dollars an episode.
I bet he is having a touch of buyer's remorse.
Let's assume (wrongfully) that he and Elin scrumped every night for 7 years. By my math, she cost $293,000 every time he romped on her.
I'd have jumped in for a night for $300k. I'd probably get a t-shirt that says "I went gay for $300k".
Wow, not bad for six years of "work"....
How has he earned that much? The man's 34. I assume it's almost entirely from endorsements - what is Nike paying him?
Nike (obviously), Tag Heuer, Buick, EA Sports, and on and on and on...
Several have dropped him, but the big ones, Nike and his TW video games are untouchable.
Tiger was reportedly bringing in $110 million per year before this situation hit the fan. His Nike deal alone is $30 million per year and his video games (e.g., Tiger Woods Golf) are another $10 million. I am guessing he makes $10 - $20 million per year in earnings and appearance fees (e.g., he regularly gets $1 - $1.5 million to show up for selected non-tour events and $3 million to show up at the Dubai Classic). Those are the relatively safe items that we know about and they total $50 - $60 million per year. Add to that his income from any number of smaller endorsements and other businesses (e.g., golf course design and consulting) and, despite several lost high profile endorsements, Tiger is still generating a considerable amount of coin.
Consider the source on this one - haven't seen it yet in the MSM
$750mil is a seriously outsized number
The Boston Herald, Denver Post and Fanhouse have run with the story, with two of them giving a range of "$750 - $833 million", but you are correct that it has not been reported by anyone close to the level of the New York Times or Washington Post. It also is not being reported yet on ESPN.com, but it was reported on Rivals Radio. Some speculation is that the higher profile outlets are trying to wait at least until the divorce papers are filed before jumping in.
Edit: Fox Business has also reported the news. Here is the video clip ...
Note: Fox News is owned by News Corporation, which also owns the London Sun, the newspaper that is the primary source for the story.
Random question: That number is in total compensation for her, clearly. Does anyone know the breakdown- i.e., as in, if there are annuities or trusts involved, or how it relates to the present value of cash, etc.
All I am saying is that, Tiger is worth around a billion. And I am certain about 90 percent of that is in illiquid, non-cash assets. Simply, he doesn't have that much cash to put in her bank account. He has assets. I'm just curious of the structure. I'd be willing to wager that this OMG 750MIL number is, though factually true in terms of net present value of his holdings, not entirely...telling the entire story. I'd imagine it involves signing certain illiquid assets over to her with book values that may/may not be correct/easily valuable.
The reports say Elin will get their main home in Florida and a property they own in Sweden and I am sure those properties and other non-liquid assets are encompassed within the $750 million figure. I also expect that this is not just the settlement with Elin, but it includes child-support or a bulk sum in lieu thereof (and possibly more for estate planning purposes) to be placed in a trust for the kids.
Unfortunately, I have not seen anything that breaks down the $750 million figure in any detail. Also, while court documents generally are public, I expect Tiger and Elin will seek to have the documents in this case sealed and use the kids as the justification for doing that. If they are successful, we may never know the exact breakdown and structure (or, for that matter, even the amount) of the settlement. Nonethless, Tiger reportedly earns in the neighborhood of $110 million per year (some reports say it has fallen to about $80 million with the loss of endorsements), so it is reasonable to expect that he can deliver a significant amount in cash even if he has to borrow the money against future earnings. If I were Elin, I would insist on as much as I thought I could reasonably get in cash.
Short of her having film of Woods having sex with dead, underage boys while drinking the blood of kittens and puppies...what could she POSSIBLY say that would be worth $750 million?
Thanks to the Howard Stern Show (who interviewed several of the mistresses), we know that Woods likes "vigorous" sex with blondes that have large breasts. Well...welcome to Earth, TW. So does about half of the planet.
The divorce rate in this country is about 50 percent. The standard for acceptable behavior from athletes is so IMPOSSIBLY low, I can't imagine Woods failed to meet it. Leonard Little killed a woman.
$750 million seems a little high.
