Maybe this figure is inclusive of all child-support and there is some sort of estate planning benefit to doing it this way. It might be cheaper after-tax to transfer a large sum of wealth to the kids now as part of this settlement than pay monthly child support until the kids are 18 and then transfer the remainder of Tiger's wealth to the kids upon his death. Upon death, the transfer would be subject to massive estate taxes (over 50% in the U.S. and possibly even higher in Sweden).

Tiger was reportedly bringing in $110 million per year before this situation hit the fan. His Nike deal alone is $30 million per year and his video games (e.g., Tiger Woods Golf) are another $10 million. I am guessing he makes $10 - $20 million per year in earnings and appearance fees (e.g., he regularly gets $1 - $1.5 million to show up for selected non-tour events and $3 million to show up at the Dubai Classic). Those are the relatively safe items that we know about and they total $50 - $60 million per year. Add to that his income from any number of smaller endorsements and other businesses (e.g., golf course design and consulting) and, despite several lost high profile endorsements, Tiger is still generating a considerable amount of coin.

The Boston Herald, Denver Post and Fanhouse have run with the story, with two of them giving a range of "$750 - $833 million", but you are correct that it has not been reported by anyone close to the level of the New York Times or Washington Post. It also is not being reported yet on ESPN.com, but it was reported on Rivals Radio. Some speculation is that the higher profile outlets are trying to wait at least until the divorce papers are filed before jumping in.

Edit: Fox Business has also reported the news. Here is the video clip ...

Random question: That number is in total compensation for her, clearly. Does anyone know the breakdown- i.e., as in, if there are annuities or trusts involved, or how it relates to the present value of cash, etc.

All I am saying is that, Tiger is worth around a billion. And I am certain about 90 percent of that is in illiquid, non-cash assets. Simply, he doesn't have that much cash to put in her bank account. He has assets. I'm just curious of the structure. I'd be willing to wager that this OMG 750MIL number is, though factually true in terms of net present value of his holdings, not entirely...telling the entire story. I'd imagine it involves signing certain illiquid assets over to her with book values that may/may not be correct/easily valuable.

The reports say Elin will get their main home in Florida and a property they own in Sweden and I am sure those properties and other non-liquid assets are encompassed within the $750 million figure. I also expect that this is not just the settlement with Elin, but it includes child-support or a bulk sum in lieu thereof (and possibly more for estate planning purposes) to be placed in a trust for the kids.

Unfortunately, I have not seen anything that breaks down the $750 million figure in any detail. Also, while court documents generally are public, I expect Tiger and Elin will seek to have the documents in this case sealed and use the kids as the justification for doing that. If they are successful, we may never know the exact breakdown and structure (or, for that matter, even the amount) of the settlement. Nonethless, Tiger reportedly earns in the neighborhood of $110 million per year (some reports say it has fallen to about $80 million with the loss of endorsements), so it is reasonable to expect that he can deliver a significant amount in cash even if he has to borrow the money against future earnings. If I were Elin, I would insist on as much as I thought I could reasonably get in cash.

Short of her having film of Woods having sex with dead, underage boys while drinking the blood of kittens and puppies...what could she POSSIBLY say that would be worth $750 million?

Thanks to the Howard Stern Show (who interviewed several of the mistresses), we know that Woods likes "vigorous" sex with blondes that have large breasts. Well...welcome to Earth, TW. So does about half of the planet.

The divorce rate in this country is about 50 percent. The standard for acceptable behavior from athletes is so IMPOSSIBLY low, I can't imagine Woods failed to meet it. Leonard Little killed a woman.

$750 million seems a little high.
