to play football, not to play trumpet
I'll double down on Valverde; but, only with the understanding that the Tigers have a 21 run lead going into the bottom of the ninth.
no kidding, he was throwing meat balls last night.
Also, I want to see people get on base for Miggy, top order needs to spray the ball around tonight.
He throws like that every night. I'd say 95/100 pitches are just 93 mph fastballs somewhere near the strikezone. It's just a matter of whether the batter hits it at one of the defenders or not.
I was definitely thinking THROW A DAMN CURVE last night. Good lord was he serving up some beachballs.
Actually, that would be worse, because much like our past closers (such as Rodney), he's much WORSE when he's not pitching in a save situation. I can't fault him for being so inconsisent, though, because almost every closer is. Even Mariano Rivera has blown some huge games.
Is Todd Jones available?
The king of getting three fly ball outs, all on the warning track with each a few feet closer to stands.
We already have our jackass manager giving away (or almost giving away) games when he starts Laird and Garcia, and now you want Todd Jones?
him "Papa Grande", i motion that we start calling him "Caca Grande". aka spanish slang for Huge Shit or Huge Turd
The only confidence I have in a win tonight would be with JV. The bats are cold right now and the pen is frightening to say the least.
It has to be Verlander. There's no other choice. If he doesn't shut the A's down, the Tigers chances drop significantly. The A's find a way to win better than any team I remember
Everyone is going with pitching, but I'd like to see the bats really come alive. We've had hits, but we need big runs. Outside of Comerica, this line-up should be hitting 5-6 homers a game.
The place where the A's play (I'm not going to try to remember what it's called anymore. Last I checked it was O.co Coliseum?) is as much of a pitchers park as Comerica is.
There isn't a huge difference.
I was surprised that O.co is more of a pitchers' park than Comerica:
Comerica is pretty much middle of the pack.
It's actually much more of a pitchers park, if for no other reason than it actually is a pitchers park.
Comerica does not benefit pitchers, it is a neutral park, and if anything, has a slight lean towards hitters.
on about a 250 pitch count tonight
My Tiger is anyone who gets an actual clutch hit with men on base
I seem to remember Avisail getting a pinch hit RBI single. If not or that, we would have had to suffer through one less batter of Valverde.
hmm, I like where your heads at. Maybe if he bangs all of the A's players wives, they will be too distraught and forfeit the game.
I feel that Prince will come through to knock in some extra bases for the runners, so I will go with the HOPEFUL MVP candidate Miguel Cabrera. I think if he goes 3-4 our offense will overcome any pitching problems.
Ajax and whoever we insert into the No. 2 spot need to get on base for Cabrera to do any damage. He isn't going to hit a homerun every at bat, or at all apparently in this series.
Tigers up 6-1 in the 5th.
Verlander has to get the CG for the Tigers to win. I wouldn't trust the bullpen with anything tonight. Bats need to get more than 3 runs.
I agree, JV probably need to go at least into the 8th inning. I really hope the bats wake up and we can finally get some runs going, we need to string together hits which we started to last night but still left a ton of runners on base
He's been quietly solid in this series. He'll get on base a lot and hopefully he's hitting 2nd with the big fella and the bigger fella drive him in. JV has got to be on tonight. Valverde will most likely pitch the 9th so god help us at that point.
Dirks, Andy. He's the Tigers version of Zack Novak. Gritty player who fights during every at bat. Even if Verlander pitches a gem, the Tigers still have to score a run.
isn't gonna let the ball touch any of his relievers hands. Verlander goes the distance in 120 pitches. Gives up 2 runs, final score 5-2 Tigers
Here we go!
Gatorade bath after a game 4 win is a chumpdick move. Like getting thrown out at third after a double, actually.
Yeah, I give a fuck what the A's do after they win. To hell with the As, and the bail jumpers who follow them.
Go Tigers. Go Giants.
Based on your intel, one might surmise that the A's have been acting like chumpdicks all season then. Just saying.
...because they celebrate every win like it's the fucking game 7 of the World Series.
...there you have it.
The comparison available for Verlander is not Jack Morris, who is merely a great one-time Tiger pitcher; the space Verlander can ascend to with a win tonight and a further deep run is that of Michigan legend. Yzerman, Kaline territory.
If he pitches 9 innings and wins it will be the greatest thing I've seen in Detroit sports since Yzerman carried the Wings halfway to a Cup on one leg.
if you count his work in the last few years of his career, Morris's WS for the Tigers and later with the Twins puts him rarified air. JV is teh greater talent, but he needs to come up big tonight then do it a few more times to solidly overtake Morris. (I suspect he will)
Morris also was on 2 Blue Jay World Championship teams, though he didn't fare as well in the post season
and redeem himself tonight. Love that guy.
For the rest of my days if you don't do your job I will refer to you as a Valverde (n) or if you didn't do your job; pulling a Valverde (v).
I seriously hate Valverde. Did anyone notice him on the mound last night? He threw in a little extra hip thrust in his horrible routine before his pitches. I hate him so much. It's like he tries to piss everyone off. He is the Jonny Gomes of baseball. Biggest fucking worthless piece of shit ever. Douche bag.
he isnt having the lights out season he had last year but he still put together a solid year and is a good closer. yeah he blew the game and that sucks and we should have won the series last night but he was fine the rest of the series. sometimes you just have a bad game.
I consider that to be pretty tame coming from me. I'm lucky I'm not drinking right now.
And guess what? He sucked last year too.
There is hardly any statistical measure by which he is in even the top 2/3 of AL relievers.
Valverde had the 46th worst ERA and 47th worst K rate among the 54 AL relievers with more than 50IP this year.
So while he sucked last year, he's even worse this year.
He's bad, he's a very bad pitcher, and to simply rely on him because "he's the closer" is foolish.
The whole system that MLB managers have set up to run their bullpen is asinine.
but he clearly did not suck last year until struggles at the very end. Every team expects their closer to be Mo Rivera and there was only one of those.
At this point it appears that, with a very few exceptions, closers are disposable. Maybe get a good to great year or two or maybe three out of them then their arms are fried. MLB managers have their pens set up the way they do because it wins games even while it shortens the careers of guys that throw one inning of pure gas 3-4 days/week. The alternative is losing more often.
Valverde was PERFECT in saves last year. Thats his job! Save games. If he gave up ukpteen runs in a couple other games, who gives a rats ass. His job closing games won the division past year. If saves 90 % last year, do they win?
But he is not good. He should try something besides <95 mph fastballs which everyone tees off on.
But he is not good. He should try something besides <95 mph fastballs which everyone tees off on.
lol Jonny Gomes of baseball
I'm glad someone got that. You know you hate Jonny Gomes. Admit it. He does nothing, ever but if there is a celebration to be had WELL YEEE HAAAAAW THAT'S JONNY GOMES' MUSIC!!!!!
Nah I don't hate him. His average is, well, average. Hit 18 bombs this year. I mean, you are right in that he doesn't play a lot, mostly used as a platoon guy.
Last night was a miserable experience, particularly from the cheap seats. Tonight I sit 20 rows behind home base.
Air it out tonight JV, air it out.
a 1st inning lead-off tater. I will not get comfortable until the 3rd or 4th inning. JV's first innings are thinning my hair. Is it Kate Upton's fault?
Whatever she's doing, I like it. Which could really be said in all instances when talking about Kate Upton.
Half way through Reds v Giants game, no score and only 4 hits. The tension is building. October baseball is fantastic
The four hottest bats in the ALDS for the Tigers have been Avila, Cabrera, Dirks and Peralta, but we need a few more to come alive as we've gone 5 for 23 with runners in scoring position in this series (and 23 LOB), so hopefully Fielder (.188, 3-16) and Jackson (.200, 3-15) can find a groove tonight and we build a comfortable lead so Verlander can lead us on to victory.
I wouldn't be shocked to see Doug Fister come out of the bullpen if the game is on the line and Verlander has thrown 130-140 pitches.
Along the same lines, I've been wondering if Verlander should have pitched the 9th last night. I know that's out-of-the-box crazy thinking but they had a lead and only needed 3 outs.
is my Tiger. I will settle for Valverde doing a Hernandez impersonation.
We already know that JV can be mentioned in the same breath as Morriss...in fact, we already know he's far better than Morriss ever was.
Paws is my Tiger. To hell with the rest of them (and Notre Dame).
I take it back. JV pitches nine, strikes out ten, and three hits those %$#!ers. I'd seriously like to see Josh Reddick get ear holed today. Without getting injured, of course.
I'm mildly disappointe Reddick hasn't been earholed already. Probably because Al-Al darn well shouldn't have kissed the baseball and the Tigers likely had a private conversation with him about that, but preaching about maturity after throwing a hissy fit in the dugout can't have sat well either.
If no chin music, I'll settle for the golden sombrero. Dude has 8 Ks in 14 at-bats, so a few more won't hurt. He's got a Rob Deer Average of .667, which is awesome.
Pitches nine, strikes out eleven, four-hits 'em.
Pretty darn close. Except for the Reddick thing.
HA, yeah. The sun shines on a dog's ass, some days.
No ear hole for Reddick, but he struck out twice. Home slice hit .118 for the series. Maybe he needs a haircut. The flo is not for jackasses.
Giants have broken it open 6-0 as MVP candidate Buster Posey clears the bases with a Grand Slam. Hope Miggy duplicates.
It's gotta be JV tonight. We need a shutdown performance so that we can build a lead that not even the Big Potato can hand over. Can Al-Al close out the game? I haven't been happy with Benoit or Valverde lately.
6-2 Giants after 5 in Cincinnati
in DC covering the nats/cards for work, but hoping my yanks can close this series today so we don't have to pitch sabathia tomorrow.
as for the tigers, want the tigers to pull out the victory tonight and have their rotation blown up for the ALCS. if the yankees do make it to the LCS, I do not want anything to do with the A's... a tigers team with a messed up rotation is much more appealing.
Fister, Sanchez, Scherzer, Verlander..... hardly blown up.
ill take two Sabathia/Fister matchups over two Sabathia/JV matchups anyday. And there's the prospect of JV only getting one solid start (maybe 2, but on short rest)
It would be JV on short rest. Game 7 at NY, he'd be amped and ready to go.
I'd agree with saying having to pitch JV isn't ideal. I'm just saying it doesn't blow up our rotation.
i think it does, from a matchup perspective.but we can agree to disagree.
IF the Tigers play in the ALCS, they would just continue with the rotation they have already established. Fister starts Saturday, Sanchez on Sunday, and Verlander is ready for game 3 on Tuesday. Scherzer starts game 4 on Wednesday. Games 5, 6 and 7 have Fister, Sanchez and Verlander. Nobody needs to pitch on short rest. Verlander pitches today (Thursday), game 3 (Tuesday) and game 7 (Sunday)--all on the regular 5th-day rest.
I know I shouldn't be projecting pitchers for the next series, but there won't be any problem with a "messed up" rotation for Detroit if they do advance.
yes, you are correct, but that game 7 has a very big asterisk next to it. if JV was pitching game 1 rather than 3, you would have your best pitcher available for a game 4 or game 5 - two games which are much more likely to happen than a game 7.
That's kind of a circular argument, though, isn't it? If the series doesn't go 7 games, then one more game pitched by Verlander wouldn't make any difference anyway, because the result of the series would be the same...
In other words, exclude Verlander's second start in the series (ignoring whether it's game 4, 5 or 7). Does it matter whether we start Verlander or Porcello in that game? The answer--it only matters if the other 6 games are split 3 to 3. If the other 6 are 4 wins to 2, it doesn't matter who pitches, because the team with 4 wins has won the series.
To summarize the summary, one single game never matters in a best-of-seven, unless the other 6 games are split 3-3. So having Verlander pitch games 1 and 5 gives the Tigers the exact same value as having him pitch games 3 and 7.
If Verlander was winning a blowout early in game 5, you would have the option of taking him out early, so he could be available to relieve in game 7. Also, you can at least argue that Verlander is most valuable when matching up with the other team's ace.
6-3 Giants after 6, as the Reds kinda ran themselves out of a rally with strikem' out throwem' out double play, with runners on first and second and nobody out.
JV and Dirks.............JV needs to go 8+, and I think the big hit comes from 'the ball player' tonight.
Probably Delmon Young who hit the big home run.
Or maybe it should be a pitcher, who is starting tonight? That'd probably be a good choice.
but our anemic and incredibly-expensive bats will do nothing to support him. A's will win.
My player of the game is going to be either Miggy or a bottle of Jack Daniels depending on how things go.
Prince, Miggy, and JV will be good as expected in this game. I think we need a bomb or some other big hit from one of the unsung guys a la Don Kelly in game 2. Maybe Avila or Delmon Young.
Giants up 6-3 heading to the ninth. Great defensive plays by Shortstop Brandon Crawford and Centerfielder Angel Pagan, short circuited a would be rally by the Reds in the 8th
Wow, the Giants defy the odds and win 3 in Cinci.
The Giants win 6-3. Reds fought hard to the end but couldn't catch a break or get the big hit they needed.
or put a banana in his tailpipe. I love the OP's sentiment about Morris/Verlander. JV can go 140 pitches tonight ... then the rotation can go Fister-Sanchez-Scherzer-Verlander-Fister-Scherzer-then Verlander in a game 7. What sucked along with everything else about last night is it totally effs up the rotation ... we may have been able to get three starts in the ALCS out of JV, but the rotation I just mentioned above will do. His possible Game 7 start would be on normal rest even if Sanchez is skipped.
I don't think Leyland is really down with 3 starts in a 3 game series though. I seem to remember him having JV in the 5th game in the ALCS last year. I may have been mistaken though.
7 game series. Not 3
Man I think you ride Verlander 8 or 9 if he has his stuff. He is a special physical specimen who can throw 100 in the 9th inning, which I'm not sure if anyone has ever been able to do before. And the Tigers bullpen is turrable. And I'm a Brewers fan; I know turrable bullpens.
A-Jax has been terrible since the series went to Oakland
Small sample size, yo.
This fucking offense man, just brutal.
Or maybe Oakland just knows how to pitch. They beat both the angles and the rangers this year. Give them a little bit of credit.
That's fair but it's a bit ridiculous to see every batter swinging at pitches in the dirt.
Is that really different from the Oakland hitters?
Yes actually it is, they are swinging through fastballs at 95-96, the Tigers are swinging and missing pitches well off the plate inside and outside.
Oh FFS stop talking about Verlander getting the outside strike call, Parker is getting the same exact thing.
Nice job AJ, more hits please.
Some more yes!!!!!
Verlander is getting it past 'em at 95. I can't wait til the 6th inning.
Mike Martin TFL in the NFL game
So where did they find all these Oakland fans?
They just opened the stadium up to random people. This is how people dress out there
That'd be it! They definitely should have tried to get some fans from there during the regular season too.
Anyone got a working stream?
Turble base running by Peralta.
Not so. The announcers were correct that you can't just take off....it could've been caught and then your ass is doubled off.
Can't really fault him for that, he had to wait and see if it would indeed travel over Pennington's head.
Meh I'll give him that one. It was close enough that he had to freeze. Hopefully Ajax can bring them home!
OH shit, please break this open Miguel. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!
Bases loaded. Cabby up. One out. Lets do it.
Tigers up 4-0, bases loaded with Prince up
Cabrera gets hit, bringing in a run, and a bases loaded at bat for Prince.
Well, we will certainly accept that free run, especially in an 0-2 count.
Will take the freebie. C'mon Prince bust this thing wide open!
I believe that officially counts as an RBI. Not what I hoped for, but JV going to be harder to beat now.
Eff it, I'll take it. Prince with the grand slam.
How about that Yankees-Orioles game? Tied up 1-1, top of the 13th
Everybody move 90 feet, 5-0. Keep it going boys!
90 more feet, 6-0!
Keep the wheel moving baby!
Especially Coco Puffs. He's a little bitch
Nothing is guaranteed....but I feel very confident, especially with Verlander still pitching
Whew I was about to call double play for Young...Keep it going boys!
Bottom of the 7th, Tigers up 6-0
A 6-0 lead with JV picthing makes me feel very good about our chances.
Verlander has only given up more than 6 runs once this year, in a 8-9 loss to Kansas City. I think it's safe to say we're gonna advance
This would be valid if the only pitcher that pitches is Verlander. Unfortunately the bullpen exists. Let's hope we dont have to witness its existence.
Verlander's only thrown 97 pitches so far. Depending on how easy the 8th is, I can see him going all 9
Darn it Crisp. How could you catch that?? I thought you were on our side!
O's have scored in the top of the 13th. Hopefully they hang on and take it to Game 5!
Orioles score one to take the lead in the 13th inning.
Dirty pitch by Justin.
Everything about that 7th inning was just lovely.
False, Justin only got two strike outs, rather than three.
He looks like Tom Cotter the comedian from AGT. In my opinion anyway.
Orioles win. Gonna take 5, which means the winning team will be playing their 5th consecutive game. Not exactly huge like other sports, but it should help us, especially if Baltimore has to fly to Detroit right after a probable win
Looking ahead, who do you think we match up best with next round? Yanks have no pitching besides CC Fatbathia. Their offense isn't doing well either. O's seem scarier to me. Good mix of vets and youth. Pitching is better as well. Only plus to playing Baltimore is we would be at home. Thoughts?
Let's wait six more outs before having this discussion.
5 outs left.
Nobody's throwing in the bullpen. Let's keep it that way. Ride your stud.
...that could be misinterpreted...
JV's thrown 111 pitches, do you send him out for 1 more?
I say yes, half becuase I'm afraid of seeing Valverde again this series, half because it's Justin-freaking-Verlander.
Does the pope shit in the woods?
And there's been a rash of Catholic bears around these parts lately.
All in a day's work for JV.
It's the 4th quarter in a tie game. Michigan just got the ball on their 20. Do you send Denard into the game?
The answer, of course, is YES!
Jim better let JV finish what he started. 3 more outs.
Suck it coco. 3 outs until the ALCS
So send out Phil Coke to close this out right?
Only because we no longer have Jason Grilli.
You have to let JV come back out. Drew, Cespedes and Smith are a combined 1-9 with 5 k's.
No one is warming up. JV has the 9th.
Here we go....
He would be ROY if Trout wasn't in The Bigs
Golden sombrero baby.
Verlander with an MLB record. 22 K's in a division series
Verlander deserves some Upton loving after tonight's game!
JV is the shit. Love it
KATE UPTON TIME.
Take time to realize what kind of pitcher you're watching. FUCK YES JV!
You know what the funny thing is? I didn't think he had the really good stuff tonight. He was nasty as hell, but not, like, silly good the way he can sometimes be. As far as pure stuff as compared to what he can bring, I think he had his B+ game tonight. And he still just mowed fools down.
Oh agreed, he really didn't feature the curve all that often tonight, when he did it wasnt the steep break that it usually has.
Yup, and he missed more often than he usually does with the fastball. But the changeup was just completely unfair tonight, and he mentioned in the postgame that it was working for him.
ALCS bound!!!! Hell yes!!! JV is the man!
GOD DAMN IS JUSTIN GOOD.
It was the most painful professional game I have ever attended. Thank god we pulled it out in 5!
BEAT BALTIMORE/NEW YORK
that this is the first time in history that all the divisional series have gone to five games.
ALCS baby! Go Tigers! JV was a fucking beast!
PARTY PARTY PARTY
Dumbass stats like this are why baseball is awesome: It's the first postseason series in which three runs have scored via wild pitch since 1911. You just don't get that kind of esoteric goofiness in other sports, and not just because of the length of time.
