OT: Thursday Night Football
For anyone with NFL Network, some Michigan players are making big plays in the Eagles-Bengals game tonight. Avant has a few catches, Leon Hall got his first interception of the season with a nice run back, and Brandon Graham has gone ham tonight. He has multiple sacks and one of them was a strip sack. Great to see Graham finally getting a chance and doing well.

Graham is having himself a decent game. Leon Hall had a pick as well. Highlight of the game thus far though:

Michigan had a ton of talent in the mid-00s. That no team ever put together a season with fewer than two losses (or two losses and a Rose Bowl win, or something) is, in retrospect, a seriuous disappointment.
Modern demographics may favor the SEC, but Michigan was second to no one in talent in seasons like '03 and '06. Read the lineups of the 1/1/07 Rose Bowl; I dare you to say that USC had a better collection of talent on the field. So why did Michigan look overpowered?

Going by the draft results and subsequent NFL careers, there's a pretty decent argument we were significantly more talented than that OSU team.

QB, OL and S were the problem areas in the late Carr era. In 2005, they had problems with each and hence had Carr's worst season. But really, I think you could make the argument that QB was the big issue. If Henson doesn't leave and Gutierrez stays healthy, in the very least we have more success against OSU.
It should be said that that SC team was legit. They put 15 guys in the draft from '07-'08, 2 more than M. So perhaps you could make the argument they were more talented.
That's not to say we didn't have obvious coaching problems. Henne got sacked 7 times while the D got lit up. That's ludicrous given the minor talent gap. DeBord was the biggest issue, but English likely was too. And considering the OL problems, Andy Moeller deserves some blame.
Ugh. I forgot how depressing that game was. I wanted to stop watching, so I'd go and wander around the house...but I couldn't stop myself from flipping on the TVs in the rooms I wandered into. It was hard to believe we could be so much worse than SC.

I don't think Gutierrez would have made any difference in '04 at all. Except maybe Michigan doesn't beat MSU. The '04 team probably made as much of its potential (Rose Bowl berth, ultra close loss to Vince Young) as any Michigan team in the decade, given how young it was.
The story of Michigan in the '00 decade is one of unfulfilled potential. The players from those teams are on NFL rosters across the country, but there was never a year where it all came together.
And there should have been many such years.

Don't know what is worse. The Philadelphia Eagles or the Thursday Night Games themselves.
