OT- For those going to PSU a few things that may help

Submitted by Steve in PA on

I've noticed threads popping up about the PSU game and where to stay, where to eat, that sort of thing.  Since I live close to there, l'd like to make a few suggestions that may be helpful.

Lodging-

I'm surprised that State College is filled up, or at least that's what some of the threads on here are saying.  If that's the case, look at staying in Lock Haven.  It's another college town about 30-45 minutes from State College.  I don't think they jack the rates up on PSU weekends, so it may be more affordable for those on a student budget.

Traffic-

I have also heard horror stories about the traffic heading west from the stadium.  I would recommend taking I-99 East to I-80.  It was build basically to get traffic in and out easily and it is a 4-lane interstate that takes you almost to the stadium.  It's only about 15 minutes to I-80 and should be a less stressful ride.  If you choose to stay in Lock Haven, you will be travelling in on I-99 anyway.

Food-

I'm not 100% certain what remains in State College for restaurants.  The chains have come in and gobbled up lots of the local eateries.  I would recommend The Corner Room or The Diner for basic grub.  The Creamery ice cream is good but over rated.  The grilled sticky buns at The Diner are much better.

My favorite to eat when there is The Deli (such original names!) which is right downtown and a bit more upscale than normal student grub, but it very reasonably priced.  And my favorite bar was The Dark Horse which is a small place on the main strip in the basement of a building.  The Dark Horse had great wings and beer batter fries with bacon and cheese (Yum!)

These are only my recommendations and may/may not be helpful to you.  I hope to score tix and be there with my son to support Michigan stomping on the hopes and dreams of PSU faithful.
