-1 for linking to Deadspin. Leon Lett is not off the hook. He was a professional and that poor kid may or may not be able to drive yet. But yeah, that's rough.

a defensive lineman scooped up a fumbled, waddled toward the winning touchdown, and foolishly finished his ramble with a show-off dive that ended up costing his team the game. No, not because of a penalty, but because he dove over the 5 yard line. His team ended up losing.

When I was a junior in HS and playing on the volleyball team we got to the provincial championship match (state championship in U.S.) and it was the fifth game and we were down 26-25. They had a huge hitter that had been let go during the last cut of the Canadian national team as a 17 year old and they gave him a perfect shoot set that I was ready for. I blocked him hard and the ball went straight down off his face and onto the floor. Unfortunately, when I came down one of my feet went over the center line and they received the point and won. Had the ball simply went down instead of off his face it would have hit the ground before my foot came down and we would have got the point, alas it didn't. Things like that stick with over the years. I had a lot of success as a HS athlete and University as well, but the things I remember most are the mistakes I made. I feel bad for that kid. If it was a nothing game he may be able to put it behind him. If it meant something, it will likely stick with him a long time. I am 35 now and still remember the few blunders I made in HS sports. Can't remember anything about any good plays I may have made.

Thats a tough loss poor kid. I coach junior high football. We had playoffs this past weekend and were fortunate enough to pull out a decisive victory and are in the championship game this weekend. I stayed around to help the younger team (5-6 graders) with their game. To make a long story short they were down 7 with 1:40 to go and driving at the 50 yard line. The qb was under center when some confusion happened and the snap came early. The qb being young and excited put his hands up assuming a false start (pretty hard for the center to do ). He was looking at us as the other team fell on top of the live ball.

The writer lost me with this line: "A high school football game ended tragically this weekend..." He called the loss of a football game a "tragedy." Nobody lost their life in this this game. What an idiot. The writer should be fired. If he is a freelancer, he should be told that his contributions are no longer needed. If he owns the blog, it should be dismantled or sold.

this actually reminds me more of plaxico's rookie year when he made a catch and fell down. thinking he was down, he spiked the ball out of frustration. fumble. recovered by the defense. now, this wasn't like the last play of the game, but it's a little closer of a comparison than leon lett...

The NFHS rule is that any kicked ball becomes dead immediately after it crosses the goal line. Wonder if the refs blew this or if Vermont has a different rule in place... This play could not happen in Michigan.

The rule must be worded differently than that, or else no field goal or extra point would ever be good (dead before it got to the goal posts), and nobody could ever run back a kick or punt that reached the end zone.

to lose......... You could get your game tying field goal blocked vs a team a division below you on national television.......and have to endure everyone celebrating your demise, with years of ridicule to come. Seems thats a worse way to lose.

Good thing nothing like that ever happened. Well, unless it happened during the 2007 regular season. All I can remember about that year is the Bowl games, for some reason. There was also UConn's loss to UNC earlier this year, where it was tied 10-10 until UConn got called for a hold in their own endzone, to give UNC a 12-10 lead, which ended in a 12-10 win.

I still think that loss the Bengals had to the Broncos is worse. This was a bone head play - the coach should have never had kids back there to catch the kick (only to protect against the fake).
