OT: Texas QB David Ash Retires Due to Concussions
Texas Coach Charlie Strong today announced that starting QB David Ash will retire from football due to repeated concussions. This makes So. Tyrone Swoopes the starter. Due to reduced depth, Strong has added intramural star QB Jimmy Greenwood to the roster.

Sad to hear this stuff. Besta luck, David.

Sucks to come back after a concussion-shortened season, work hard in the offseason, then pick up another one in the first quarter of the first game. The right decision, for sure--one that too few guys seem to make.

And an entire state is now scouring the earth for game tape of the SAE IM team.

Hate seeing this happen but a smart decision by him. Not worth the risks of playing anymore so he made a mature but difficult decision. Hope he succeeds in his future endeavors!

Feel bad for the kid! Hope he leads a successful life!

The intramural kid must be balling it up.

Would be an awesome story for him.

Is still around? Geez. I thought he graduated years ago.

I hope there is no long term damage.

If he had a severe-enough concussion to be shut down for 2/3rds of a season, there will be cognitive repercussions.
Good for him in hanging up the helmet.

I would like to hear what Steven Threet has to say about his decision to hang em up.

It's division I football! It's the big twelve! It ain't intramurals!
But seriously, that's too bad for Ash. He went through some shit his last few years.

But yet kids like Jameis Winston that keep getting chance after chance after multiple transgressions keep moving on to play another day

David Ash was a solid player.

Ash seemed like a good person and player, and all this does is end the seond, and by far the least important, quality. Good luck to the man.

I concur.

Good luck young man. In yet another NFL disaster, Arizona's Jonathan Dwyer got arrested for abuse of an 18 month old child.

Are you serious? Wow everyday it's something with the NFL

That is too bad for ash. However can you imagine being called up to varsity like this greenwood kid? A dream come true!

when a college player ends his career?
September 17th, 2014 at 10:39 PM ^
ALWAYS disappointed to see someone's season/career cut short due to injury. I feel for the guy.

What is that someone is a Holocaust denier who rapes a lot? Then I think I'd be ok with it. Personally.
September 18th, 2014 at 2:15 AM ^
So you mean like Jameis Winston?
September 17th, 2014 at 11:40 PM ^
Too bad. I feel for the kid, but as a person seeing his grandpa go through Parkinson's, you should always make the healthy choice (not saying concussions result in Parkinson's, just that Parkinson's affects the brain).

Hey, where was MY call? I QB'd back-to-back IM champions at Michigan! I was totally qualified to hold a clipboard and doodle.
Small world-- that Greenwood kid played at my high school's arch rival, Kinkaid. Old private school in Houston, maybe 120 kids per graduating class. Very far from class 5A football that normally provides the D1 recruits in Texas. Very. Far.

Hopefully he suffers no long-term effects.
Each serious incident like this is another nail in the coffin of my college football fandom.

Really hate to see someones dream end like this. Hopefully there is no permanent damage and he leads a long a productive life outside of playing football.
