OT: Terry Foster Returning to 97.1

Submitted by uncle leo on

Foster will be coming back to the show this afternoon. I cannot believe how fast time flies. He's been out for FOUR months after having a stroke. It must have been a lot worse than we all thought or was let on. It sounded like something minor but he apparently has been struggling big time.

I actually liked Riger filling to to counter Valenti's rampant homerism, but I'm glad Foster's healthy and coming back to the radio.

And as I read the story a little more, he suffered two strokes.

I am glad Foster is healthy enough to return, but I felt that Valenti loved working with Riger. They seemed to be able to work off each other much better than Valenti did with Foster. I was beginning to think that was a permanent move. oh well

I agree on Riger adding some funny nonsense to the show, but he annoyed me more than Mike when it came to discussing Michigan. I respect Mike's opinon most of time, even when you can tell hes clearly pushing buttons to get stupid callers.

Riger would do things like "I am a Michigan fan and disappointed with Harbaugh and you should be to"  questioning how good he is. I know its just a way to rile up callers, but yea, that got annoying at times.

Valenti is a troll, but I admit he is very skilled at radio broadcasting. He knows how to frame his position and give it enough backing with some facts to make you think he isn't just doing a radio bit.

Riger has a decade-plus less experience and it shows -- you can tell he's being ridiculous, which doesn't make him worth the time. I liked him in small doses, but as a regular host, he doesn't remotely have what it currently takes.

But he's a Sparty grad in a predominantly UM market.  I never feel like he is lying when he says how much he hates us.  And that's fine. It's genuine, even though he overplays it for calls.  And he gets the calls.

Riger is way more prone to say unsupported stupid stuff just to drum up calls. It's a lot more obvious when he trolls anti-UM topics for calls

Too bad I prefer Riger now -- even though I know we aren't even supposed to speak of this show on this site for some reason.  It is entertainment and it does its job.

Great for Terry, though!

I love listening to Valenti...I love his strong, well-informed opinions. Dude backs his princibles. His UM hatred can be hard to take, but I respect his hard-core fandom. He also seems to be the only one in this town who doesn't think the Lions are better than they are.

The guy is trolling you.  He's smart, his opinions are generally pretty informed but what I am intersted in local radio for, local sports, he's a completely biased turd.  I have no idea why anyone would listen to this guy and not realize you are being trolled by a guy with a schtick.

This, a thousand times over, this.

Valenti is a troll; nothing more.  There's very little that's genuine to that guy.

Most importantly, I'm glad to hear that Foster is well enough to return to work.  That's great news.

I still won't listen.

on the radio. Valenti is really bad in terms of his hot takes, and annoys me often, but he is actually talented as a radio talk show host at least. Foster adds nothing to that show, neither take wise or talent wise. At least Riger had some humor and push pull with Valenti. Foster simply plays second fiddle.

Yep, kind of a limp fish. Either as a solo act or as Valenti's foil.

Valenti is very good at doing the sports radio thing. He puts strong opinions out, generates interaction, and builds his show. He doesn't go very deep into his analysis, on air at least, so it becomes a lowest common denominator type show. But that works for ratings, he's worth a lot to 97.1. I find he wears on me quickly and I'll hit the Michigan podcasts or WTKA live instead, but I can see why he's been successful.

Same here. I won't listen to it when it is just him. Anyone who tries to be so non-controversial that they have to resort to being a State of Michigan guy should not be on the radio doing an opinion show. Riger is much better with Valenti.

I am glad he is healthy enough to return though he should really hang it up at this point. He clearly doesn't really follow sports and is more of a yes man now more than anything.

I wasn't sure if I should make another thread on it because I made a similar one on prior rivals articles but Mike Farrell from Rivals just posted is UA AA game awards.

Luiji Vilain won the "Bull Market" Award.

This goes to the player who raised his stock the most during the week, and that was defensive end Luiji Vilain. While Vilain, a Michigan commitment, is already a four-star and ranked No. 7 at weakside defensive end, he improved his stock quite a bit. He’s not a five-star talent, but a move into the Rivals100 is certainly possible as he showed not only speed and length but toughness.

So sick of Riger

Always been sick of Mork Valenti.

Morning show got a lot better by replacing bill with Jamie. Having Terry back, mayyyybe I will tune in again. Maybe.

I hope they bring back some of the songs that were related to Terry. I think they stopped playing them when Terry temp left the show. #HyperBowl

Also, I love the Mark DeeAntonio song with Wojo in it. Some of them are hilarious.

From the looks of it, most people here prefer Riger which seems odd to me. IMO, he can go back to doing updates between Red Wing periods. That's about how much talent I think he possesses.

Riger is very good at interviews. He asks blunt, stir-the-pot questions at press conferences and at post-game, way better questions than other questioners.  Unfortunately, when hosting in the studio, he seems pretty lazy at generating interesting topics.

Then again, nobody on the station seems that good at coming up with anything interesting. The typical topic is a variation of 'If the Lions/UM/Red Wings/Pistons etc. lose this week or new week or wind up out of the playoffs, should their coach be fired or is their season a failure or should some star player not be re-signed?"

I feel like screaming, "I dunno, since the decision isn't going to be made until the season is over, how about you watch the game, see how it turns out, see if the team/coach/players look good or bad and then make a rational decision, instead of engaging in meaningless wild-ass speculation?"  I turn them off a lot, when that sort of crap starts.

I had heard that initially he was supposed to come back as early as October but the recovery was not going quite as planned for him. Glad to hear he has made it through all this and is able to return to something he clearly enjoys doing.

As for 97.1, I can barely stomach more than a few minutes at a stretch nowadays. I tend to run with WTKA or podcasts for the last several years.

Glad he is healthy. But wow is he terrible at his job. And he is going to be even worse now, since I'm sure sports were not a focus of his lately.

Glad Terry was able to recover but i didnt like the show with him in it. He was Mike's puppet, but Riger on the other side balances the show much better since he is a UofM guy.

Much easier to insult UM and Wojo without Woj coming back with quik witty comebacks where mike would have to trip over his part truth BS he puts out about UM daily.

But I am sure Riger has had enough of Mike calling him everything but human and then acting like Riger is an ass if Riger accidently interruptes him because he can't get a word in edge wise.

And today's promo for the Valenti and Foster show was "After year 2 is Harbaugh a great coach or meh". Easing him right back into things with lazy radio.
