So much for USC family values.

Mays can't really get mad about this....it's not like he made much of an effort to improve during his time at USC.

If anything, I think this reflect more poorly on Mays than on Carroll or USC. It seems really immature to be complaining about not getting drafted high enough and blaming Carroll for not taking him.

Very childish of Mays. Carroll has to look out for himself as an NFL head coach, and the scrutiny surrounding the pick if Mays doesn't pan out would have been astounding.

Carroll was right to pass him up for a better S prospect in Earl Thomas. Mays is not good in coverage and overruns plays too much. Despite the physical talent, he never really put it all together as a S.
and it's only 'talk,' is that Carroll told Mays he would take him/was looking fw to working with him. basically that Carroll hyped him up as it being a continued working experience. got his hopes up and then bailed on him.

it's Pete Carroll...I'm just waiting until 2014 or so when the NCAA finally gets around to actually investigating SC with something more than the kid gloves.

I honestly think mays is more of an NFL linebacker then a safty. I think the switch will be good for him. I don't think carrell did anything wrong here. And honestly I'd like to see Pete do well in the NFL because he always has a ton of class. Glad he's out of USC also now the PAC ten will balance out

Yes. Erlacher played safety but has done just fine in the NFL as a LB.
April 24th, 2010 at 10:40 AM ^
Also, urlacher put on iirc 40ishlbs towards the end of his college career. He was a late grower and all of a sudden was lb size. 6-4, 260 with a 4.4 forty... dude was (is) a freak. He's gotten slower, but he is still a beast. I doubt mays is going to become an inside lb like urlacher. Maybe hell be a strong safety, but I don't see an urlacher-esque transition

The biggest knack against Mays is his horizontal movement so he'd useless at LB unless he was only utilized on 3rd down.
April 24th, 2010 at 12:09 AM ^
...but I think that calling out Carroll will play pretty well in LA right now, and even better if they get more than a slap on the wrist from the NCAA.
horrible thread title
I agree. Had Pete Carroll thought Taylor Mays was good enough to be the 14th pick he would have been.
Jimmy Clausen isnt blaming Charlier Weiss for being drafted 48th or Colt McCoy blaming Mack Brown for being a 3rd rd pick. It's the NFL draft, you're not going to know where you'll end up at.
Did you just end a sentence with a preposition?
April 24th, 2010 at 10:45 AM ^
I'm pretty sure that S&W say it's okay to do when awkward sentence constructions will result from 'proper' preposition placement.
However, I don't think the exception covers the sentence you critiqued.
carroll shafting a recruit
OMG
MY MENTAL EYE
IT BURNS
The Difference is Pete is the Head Coach of a Pro Team now and drafted a player at his position. Last year Mays was a top 20 pick he talked with Pete Carroll and choose to stay another year.
Then I remembered that he'll be making multiple millions of dollars and realized that there is no reason to feel bad for him.
the first thing he does after he's drafted is take verbal shot at an opposing team's HC. classy.
Did Pete at least attempt to wine and dine Taylor, or did he sneak out at night and leave a 20 on his nightstand?
I can't see Mike Singletary being too happy about this. Seems like the last head coach in the league that you'd want to make a whiny first impression upon.
whiny. He's angry that Carrol used and lied to him.
I think Mays' real beef is that he was convinced to return for a senior year, when he would probably have been a Top 10 as a junior.
He didn't do well as a senior (part of it was a new defensive scheme at USC). He also saw how Mark Sanchez resisted Persuasive Pete and made fat cash with the Jets.
But to blame Carroll for not drafting him: what an immature idiot. That's not the way the NFL works, and he should be glad he's still on the West Coast and better get over it quick or Coach Singletary will be dropping his pants before the first mini-camp.
Pants on the ground, pants on the ground...
Maybe it's just me, but I've never associated Pete Carroll with "class."
I guess it's all a matter of perspective. Compared to Lane Kiffin and Urban Meyer, Pete is a really classy guy.
It's a business, just because he was your college coach doesn't mean he has to draft you. It reflects worse on him than Pete Carroll.
His obligation is to the Seahawks, to pick the best player that he can for every pick. Period. It hurts Mays, it's not personal, but he made it that way with a classless statement.
Maybe someone should have told Taylor Mays that he wasn't first round material. Unless of course Carroll did, in which case, you were still a second round pick and are going to make a lot of money, plus you're close to home in San Fran.
April 24th, 2010 at 10:03 AM ^
Seattle would have been close to home since he grew up in Washington.
April 24th, 2010 at 12:52 PM ^
The kid's mad, he lost an enormous amount of money by not coming out last year. Maybe it's misdirected anger, and Mays is probably wrong, but I get why he's pissed off, and I can see where Pete Carrol would be the first one he thought of.
