OT: Talking Cars Tuesday - Woodward Dream Cruise

Submitted by JeepinBen on

Well, Tuesday again. Also coming up on the 3rd Saturday in August, that means crawling traffic, sprawled humanity, and the smell of unburned hydrocarbons and burnt rubber.

Who's heading to the Woodward Dream Cruise this weekend? Also, if you could have ONE car to cruise on Woodward, what would it be?

No, but a tuned, track-driven and beaten-up Miata with 200k miles probably does, and probably costs a fraction of the price of a new Porsche 911 GT3.

But it also arguably doesn't look as good.

Conversely, someone might have put in time and effort to shine up that Miata and make it look damn good, and wants to show off that it *can* compete with that 911 GT3 in every category.

CGordini said it really well, but on top of that my story to me is special. I saved up while in grad school to buy my first brand new car. A Deep Impact Blue 2014 Mustang GT with the track package. I already knew I made the right decision, because I love looking and listening to my car. It hit home when I was driving the car back from the dealership when I first got her and a lady on the sidewalk yells to me "That's a beautiful car!"

So not only do I get to appreciate the work that I put into getting my car, but others can too. So yes it's a big "LOOK AT MEEE"-fest but it's also a celebration of what people wanted, have or at one time had. I grew up near Woodward and got to grow up hearing stories about my dad and all of the amazing classic cars he used to have (and then wreck). Tons fo good stories, and a lot of fun.

Also, on the appreication of value front. My car is priceless.

I'd love to have a classic old muscle car, or something racy and fast, which is why I plan on keeping my '06 Mustang as long as I can.

But for the Woodward Dream Cruise?  Gotta have something that you can drop the top.  And there's not a hell of a lot of driving or getting anywhere at that event.  So it might be fun to let people admire your GTO or Cuda or what have you, but it's not going to get actually driven much.  For the Cruise, I'd want something huge, boaty, comfy, and slow.

I actually waited for this thread to pose this question: my 2013 Hyundai Sonata is going to need new tires before winter comes. I live in Cleveland. I'm not looking to get snow tires, but something that will work well in all seasons. Any recommendations? Right now, it's got the Hankook tires that the dealer provided when I first bought it. Those have been fine, but I've not bought tires before so I don't know what's what.

Go to tirerack.com You can buy from there if you'd like, but the reviews are golden. "type of driver" mileage, vehicle, etc. I bet there are plenty of people with sonatas who drive in the midwest who can tell you what they think of your tire, or what tire you should get

I may very well get my dad's 1968 Firebird and take it to the Cruise, or at least near it. I say near it because if you don't leave after a certain point on Saturday, near it is about the best you can do. We shall see how things pan out. I actually know a fair number of people who live on the Woodward corridor who - for good reasons - choose this coming weekend to go on a short vacation.

They are a little ugly, but impressive at the same time.  You don't see many of these rare birds since they fetch big $$$.

I am thinking about buying a 1999 to 2004 Mustang GT ragtop in the future.  That will be my cruiser without big $$$.
