OT: Talking Cars Tuesday (on a wednesday)

Submitted by JeepinBen on

So, I'm a day late but we can still have a car thread today to bide the time until HARBAUGH goes and HARBAUGHS something else.

For this week:

What was your first car, and why was it the BEST first car and/or the WORST first car?

Edit - let us know when you got it. Having a 1991 BMW was a sweet first car in 1991. Less so in 2005.

Mom handed this car down to me in 1975.

Red with a black vinyl top.  I had a an 8 track player mounted by the ash tray and this thingy I could plug into the 8 track player to play FM radio.  The factory radio was AM only.

The big bench front seat was nice for the lady action.   Who had it better than me?

With a Rocket 400 in it -- retrofitted it with a Holly 750 double pumper.

The car had beautiful lines and plenty of get up and go (my tire guy was a happy man).

Downside -- it drank a ton of that $.70/gallon gas in 1978 when I got it and was a bit small to get comfortably laid in (but who needed to be comfortable at age 16?

That car was the cat's ass -- love to have it now.

If I wasn't on the app I'd post pics.

First: 1987 (maybe 88) Renault Medallion. Totaled it on the highway in Saint Clair Shores during a horrible winter storm going to a hockey game. Needless to say the backup goalie got the start that night.

Best: My current ride. 2012 Ram 1500 BigHorn. Extended cab so rear doors are as big as the front. 4x4, 17 mpg average, 400 HP Hemi, and room for the wife, kids and dog.

Dad bought it when I was 13 (1999) and we spent the next couple of years restoring it. Convinced him to drop a 351C in place of the 302 it came with stock.

Pros: chick magnet, a ton of fun to drive

Cons: cop magnet, 13MPG, no A/C

Never going to get rid of it. Too many memories.

68 Chevelle. Bought it in 1989 from an old lady down the road for $250. Loved that car and drove the hell out of it for two years until she finally had enough. Then some guy pulled up to the house and offered me $600 for her. He was rebuilding one and needed the trim and other parts. The only bad thing was I forgot to get my Motley Crüe tape out of it before he took it. Go Blue.

Hello mgoeveryone this is my first post :). Had fun with this one.

First car that was ever "mine" was a 93 civic hatchback my parents bought for me to use in high school. My Dad has driven civics for as long as I can remember. I always thought they were so "uncool" and "booooring" and was "terrified" that I'd end up driving one in high school if my parents got me a car (had alway pictured driving a camaro or Z car or funky old school volvo with character...like the cool kids right?). Halfway through HS my parents decided they would get me a civic. After digesting the news, I said ok, but please the only thing I ask is that it's a manual transmission. One day my Dad brings a 93 civic hatchback home. With an automatic transmission. And in bright teal green. I was so grateful for them to buy me a car. Yet honestly I was also disappointed. And being disappointed at a gift that many people don't have the opportunity to have made me feel worse.

I spent the two years quietly driving that car. clocked it with a friend at 12.6 seconds 0-60. All the girls said my car was "cute". I have a feeling this is something they call character building.

Last year after grad school I bought my first car. I started calculating the costs to own, and thinking about how much I could haul in it (was moving out west). After looking at tons of options, slowly my plan to buy that sporty miata or a jeep changed...to a civic. Found a 95 civic 4dr ex with a 1.6L vtec, manual tranny. 900 bucks off craigslist...and with a lot of tlc (time and $) we have become best friends. Hauled everything I own out to Washington from Michigan. Best part? Working moon roof. Other awesomeness? Installed a trailer hitch and was amazed pulling a full trailer of drywall up and down hills for an hour getting 31 mpg. I got 43 mpg a few weeks ago. Currently at 205K miles, will do my best to go over 300K.

The car's a beast, I'm sold on civics and I fully forgive my parents. I get what they're talking about now.
