OT: Talking Cars Tuesday (on Wed again..)
So, late again. My mistake. This week - what was your favorite car advertisement of all time? Promo? Print? TV? Radio? Was it great because the car was great? Because the ad was outstanding?
I have a few that come to mind. I really enjoyed the Honda Rube Goldberg commercial, but the one out right now that gets me is embedded in the first comment
@ 25 seconds. I know of a few MSU students/grads that root for Michigan but for a commercial they should have gotten that right.
Yeah that's pretty lame...you would think someone in the process would have caught it
Gotta be this Eminem Chrysler 200 one from the Packer-Steeler Superbowl in 2011. I remember the room got super quiet when this was on. Best car commercial and one of the best superbowl commercials I've seen. I don't even know if the car is any good either. I just remember the commercial lol.
But I actually liked the Clint Eastwood one better, Halftime in America. Very moving, although not moving enough to make me buy a Chrysler.

300's are nice. And for what you pay vs. what you get, I'd put it up against any other vehicle in the class.
^^^Works for Chrysler^^^
Just a fan and have been buying dodge/chrysler/jeeps my entire life.
Every person I have ever known that had a Chrysler had their transmission turn to metal shavings or melt into slag by the time it had 90,000 miles.
That being said, I have driven only Ram 1500s for the last 10 years. Best. Truck. Ever. Mopar.

I've been known to put over 250K miles on cars, so durability is the most important thing when I'm looking for something new. From my own experience: Japanese > German > American > British.
That may have been the case 15 years ago, but not anymore.....and totally depends on the vehicle.

My family has had wretched luck with the Germans. Blown tranny's, blown headgaskets. Sensors freakin' galore went out. My wife's cousin finally ditched them after having two BMW leases end up being complete hanger queens.
Is BMW crap? No. But they aren't the bank vaults most people think they are anymore. They're way too complex for that.
Would I buy one? Sure, if I had the money and time to fit in their maintanance schedule (which is often free if you lease). If I'm recommending a car to someone for whom reliability is an overriding concern I recommend Toyota or Honda; and I'm a Dodge boy.
I guess my point with all this is that in alot of ways we live in a golden age of cars. Most car quality is really good, especially if you RTFM and take care of the cars the way the manufacturer suggests.
I remember a couple years ago I did a historical search on the JD power long term surveys. IIRC Chrysler was about 3 years behind Toyota. By that I mean that the 300 was reporting the same amount of quality issues as the Toyota did 3 years before.
People would look at that and say 'See! Chrysler is crap!' But those same people would have no problem buying a 3 year old used Camry.
At this point, you can almost close your eyes and randomly point your finger at a car ad in the paper and pick out an automobile that will last 10 years and 200K miles without any major (engine, transmission) issue going wrong so long as you take care of it.
My first car was a Chrysler Concorde and sure enough the trans went out - along with a handful of other things - around 100K... I guess I had a good one :)
It's funny you say that (and the poster above); I had a Chrysler Sebring and the transmission had to be replaced completely right around 90,000 miles.
Every morning when you open the garage to see your shiny new car, you think, "Shit. It's still a Chrysler"
Thank you for your insightful comment, douchebag.
probably one of those guys who has a Lexus ES300 and goes around saying "I drive a Lexus" when you really paid 20k more for a rebadged Camry
^ Works for Chrysler.
Actually, I only buy American. Current cars: '15 Equinox, '10 Ford Fusion, '04 Chevy Trailblazer with 236,000miles on the clock. Former cars: Dodge Caravan, Chrysler T&C, Ford Expedition (2), Ford Mustang, Buick Regal GS, Buick Skylark (for my son), Jeep Liberty (for my daughter. Engine went to shit at 100,000miles. Imagine that.)
Haha...I'll put my F150 up against your Ram. Love my F150! :). Gotta love a good pickup truck.

'97 Intrepid with 198K miles on it. No Transmission issues. I've also taken a couple of Jeeps over the 200K mark without transmission issues.
Alot of Chryslers tranny issues, at least in the 90's with the UltraDrive follow on (46LE? Can't remember) , were due to them building a slick, but maintanance picky transmission and not doing a good enough job informing their customers about it.
If you didn't put the right fluid in that transmission, and didn't change the fluid more frequently than you might normally, it would fail.
I was religious about it, and I was a strong believer in transmission coolers. I did okay driving a ton and towing.
I spent two very "interesting" summers working in the old crumbling Chrysler Jefferson Assembly plant in Detroit in '72 and '73. After seeing and experiencing how those cars were built, you couldn't have given me one for free.
We had an '84 minvan that ate its transmission at 90K miles. Our '87 2.2 K car needed a new tranny at 150K. On the other side, my buddy had a charger with a 727 Torqueflight that was indestructable. We had a '75 duster with the slant 6 211 that never ever had an issue. It finally died due to rusting out. We've owned a bunch over decades. Only one would I call a lemon.
the 300 SRT at an SRT event at Joliet.
That is an amazing car. Its like riding a solid rocket booster. Handling was a bit tough but they aren't light cars. The neat part was that the company that put on the event used the SRT cars they had as daily drivers; and then put on the racing event on the weekend.
The instructor I spoke to said most of them ended up buying the car when the seasons were done if Chrysler was willing to sell them, because even with all that abuse the engine and transmission were bulletproof.
thank you for posting that. i'd never seen it. love clint. great clenched-teeth comment by him at the end, 'it's half time america, and everybody is going to hear...'
EDIT: this was in response to mad-hatter's posting of that clint, 1/2 time in america commercial. how it ended up down here? maybe the server hamsters know.
I was working in Detroit at the time, and I think that added something to it, but I absolutely loved this commercial when I saw it the first time. Still a great ad.
I forgot to mention this commercial which is a close runner up to the Eminem one... This is the Maserati commercial from Superbowl 2014. Pretty much the highlight of the night considering Manning n co got blown out.
Also don't know if Maserati is any good when it comes to the Lambos, Ferraris, McLarens and Lotuses of the world.
I liked the old Super Bowl commercial with the Top Gun birds with Kenny Loggins' Danger Zone playing as they try to poop bomb a Nissan that was fresh out of a car wash.

Gotta love all of the Joe Isuzu commercials from the 80's & early 90's.

the VW "Drivers Wanted" slogan.
Not a car commercial, but I also enjoy the commercial where guys are protecting and washing a big baby that is supposed to represent their car. I know the feels there.
...using the force on his parents new car. Best ever.
My wife's best friend from grade school runs that account. She and her team put that commercial together.

They hit that one out of the park
That would be the Star Car
Can't embed/link from work right now, but it's one hell of a commercial. Check it out if you haven't done so already. Also, if someone wants to be uber nice and post it for me that would be great.
I'm a buy me a Ford truck and cruise it up and down the road
I believe the make was actually Mercury, not Ford.
+1 to you anyway for reminding me of that catchy jingle.
I may come back and neg you later if the song gets stuck in my head too long.
Nothing beats Khan talking about "rich Corinthian leather..."
The band OK Go partnered with Chevrolet to make this music video, an excerpt of which was used as a Super Bowl commercial a few years ago. I like this version of the song better than the original:
Hard to pinpoint a favorite really. However, a few classic ones stand out to me.
For example, Lexus did it right with its launch commercials in 1989 - here's one:
Ford hyping the first Taurus was kind of cool:
And of course, who can forget "Fahrvergnugen"? Of course, that this commercial was done before there was much in the way of integrated camera tracking software is interesting in itself (as CG and live action would have been hard to integrate in 1990).
Gotta be the Canyonero.
Can you name the truck with four wheel drive, smells like a steak and seats 35?
someone thought that's what America was shouting for in vehicular transporation makes this even funnier. AMC came up with some off the wall ideas in the 70s. How else could you follow the Gremlin?
