OT: Talking Cars Tuesday - Summer Shows & Cruises
Well here in Chicago Saturday was perfect. 78 and sunny, a wonderful day to get a little too much sun at a car show. The winner of our show was a pristine, Lansing built, Cutlass Supreme with a beautiful white paint job. Some were surprised that this '57 Chevy didn't take it:
So - do you go to car shows over the summer? Have a car you show? Are you a local who hates the bustle of the Dream Cruise (I have non-sports loving family in AA who hate the bustle of home football games similarly), are you a car fan who loves the bustle of the dream cruise? What's your perfect car for a summer car show or cruise?

Exactly right. No car in the world is better for slow cruising than a big luxury convertible the size of an oil tanker. Preferably a Lincoln or Caddy although a Buick or Olds will do just fine also.
for the Woodward Dream Cruise. I usually take off the Thursday and Friday before, stock up on supplies, and don't leave the house for 3 days. It's a living hell for the locals, so if you come, try to be cool.
Occasionally, I will bring one of my dad's cars out of the shed to drive during the Dream Cruise, like last year when I brought the kids who had never been to it before. Quite honestly, most of the action seems to be off of Woodward where people attempt to drag for a block or three. I discovered one year that they frown on this on 12 Mile in Berkley, so there's that.
We actually only go up and down Woodward once or twice when we do go (which is about every fourth year), then park somewhere, find a place to eat, look at some cars that aren't in motion, then go home. Otherwise, it's too much for not much return.
as a big car show. Actually driving in it isn't much fun at all. The park at the corner of 13 and Woodward has a good show and there's usually a kids area around 13 and Normandy (mobile petting zoo, bounce houses, etc).
99% of the people that go are just fine. Just don't drag race down the mile roads or any of the damn residential streets. Every year some ass drives by my house doing 110.
When I lived in Kalamazoo I used to show my Triumph TR6 at Maddogs&Englishmen British Car Show held at Gilmore Car Museum. Won many awards. Now that I live in Youngstown, OH, I just this past weekend entered in a British Car Show held in conjuction with the Pittsburgh Vintage Car Races at Schenley Park. It took 1st place. The best part was the 65 mile drive to Pittsburgh with the top down early in the morning
I can't wait for next year's event.
If I could pick one car to tour up and down Woodward it would have to be a 1967 Sting Ray Corvette, silver, with 427 Tri-Power and a 4-speed manual. I grew up in a household where my dad had a 1978 Silver Anniversary edition L82. Just love the shape of those old C2's.

The big car shows get all the press, but the best and most underrated car show in Michigan is Eyes on Design.
The best kept secret is the Lingenfelter Collection: Where else will you see a Ferrari: LaFerrari, Enzo, F40, GTO (and more) all parked next to each? Oh, and they're across the aisle from a Bugatti Veryon, Lamborghini Reventon and Porsche 959. But come for the exotics; stay for the Corvettes, Packards and Pierce-Arrows.
