OT: Talking Cars Tuesday - Cars you hate

Submitted by JeepinBen on

Hey, it's actually tuesday!

Per a great suggestion from "A Different Jason" this week let's get the hate out there. What car (s) do you absolutely HATE? Maybe you bought the wrong vehicle, maybe that rental you had for a week was the worst thing ever, maybe that car just has a stupid look on its stupid car face.

Let's hear the hate. The less rational the better.

My sister has one and in my opinion they're great appliances for people who use their car as an appliance.

That said, I don't think I've ever driven anything more annoying. I was ready to strangle the engineer who OK'd the brake pedal feel. For those who don't know, hybrids and electric cars have 2 brake systems. One is the usual dry friction brakes that every car has. Hybrid/electrics also have regeneretive braking - using the spinning wheels to charge the battery back up. The Prius (and most H/Es) modulate these two braking systems with the one pedal and the transition between the two is absolutely awful. I think people will go elsewhere in a hurry. Teslas have the regen braking with the gas pedal - foot off the gas, regen brakes kick in. That way the brake pedal is just the "normal" friction brakes. Others have steering wheel paddles - like shift paddles, that kick in the regen brakes. Doing it all with one pedal is just a terrible way to drive.

For the most part, in our very congested DC area, we will almost always take the Prius.  It's a truly great car, with reasonable maneuverability, reasonable acceleration and - particularly for its size - incredible roominess.  It may not be as much fun as a couple of our cars are (at least to me, not so much to my wife or kids), but it does what it sets out to do and delivers more than 50 mpg in the process.

The Prius is the worst. I get worked up even thinking about how terrible they are. Their drivers are the worst too. I'm not talking about the pompous attitude that they seem to have. I am talking their literal driving skills. Lacking.

I'm from Massachusetts though, and I hate everyone's driving.

which has been a really good car, but now she wants a Subaru outback, which I think is dog ugly, plus I don't want a 4cyl, nor a boxer engine. I'm pushing for a Honda Crosstour or a Toyota Venza.

So you'll be getting the Outback with the 3.5L six cylinder then?

I don't know that there are any cars that I truly hate, but I will say that I hate Ford interiors.  Had a rental Taurus once and after a few hours of driving it I was ready to pull my bruised femur right out and start swinging.

There is the 3.6 limited, but we're buying used and they're hard to find and prohibitively expensive, at least from the listings I've seen. The Outbacks in our price range seem to have considerably fewer options than comparably priced Hondas/Toyotas.

Subaru has never really been on the cutting edge of style, but the reliability, resale value, and even the gas mileage on the new models, is as good or better than anything else on the road. No to mention the awd system makes any amount of snow under 3 ft laughable (I drove circles around jeeps and 4x4 trucks in my 390hp WRX on performance tires!!). They're not the prettiest, but they're amazingly practical and reliable. There's a reason they continue to break their own sales records month after month, even through a down economy a few years ago.

My mom got a Chevy Traverse a year or two ago and I absolutely despise it. The seat seems to be configured to give you the most back pain possible, the dashboard is set up really confusingly, and it drives like a tank.

a car dealership for slightly over 3 years right out of college, so I got to drive most non sport car trade-ins to some extent.  I never drove anything worse than the Pontiac Aztec.  It looked like crap, and it drove even worse.  It was pretty easy to see, after two nights of driving it, why it consistently gets ranked as one of the worst cars of all time.  No wonder Pontiac went under.

I would tend to agree with this one - the Aztek was an awful car. I had one briefly about 15 years ago and couldn't stand it. Not much for looks, handled not too well and basically was best described by my sister as "the product of a weird marriage between a Hamilton Beach toaster and an SUV".

My father started his career at General Motors working with the group that worked on the Firebird and never, ever forgave the company for what he called "the slow bastardization of the performance brand". The Aztek was but one example.

Totally agree.  Very ugly.  But I still love mine.  Comfortable to drive, very safe, very reliable (0 problems in 3 years of ownership), and quite handy.  The fold up seats and in bed trunk are very usefull and swallow gear.  Kills it in the snow, stability control isn't too touchy and works like it should.  Off road it isn't like the Tacoma it replaced but does fine for most purposes and carries the hunting dogs just fine and a dead deer or two.  Cons: ugly, from most angles but looks fine from others which is weird.  Mileage sucks, should be better for a smaller truck.  Towing capacity is limited at 5000lbs but gets most things done.  Looking forward to the redesign which is rumored to be coming soon.

I just bought a Flex 6 months ago. Never liked the look a lot. But compared it to buying an Explorer and it was a no-brainer when you look at the total cost and performance. And the Flex is a lot bigger inside than you'd expect. That's what I was looking for, a car to fit the family of 5 and cargo. Looks were secondary.

because I had a '92 Cavalier in the very same color. Bought it used, and they had the typical GM rotting floorboard allows water to seep in issue, so when I got that car (It had been parked for about a year) there was moss growing on the INSIDE of the windows because with the moisture and the heat of the summer the car had basoically truned into a terrarium.

Oh yeah, it also had an aluminum head. The problem with the aluminum heads was that if they'd get too hot, they'd warp, and not even replacing the head gasket would help. I remember being stuck in traffic in that POS, watching the temperature gauge climb towards the ionosphere, and turning the heat on even though it was 95 degrees outside to try and keep it running long enough to escape whatever traffic jam I was in and put more coolant in.

When I took it to the junkyard, I asked if I could push the crusher button on it, but insurance and safety and blah blah blah

Mercedes C-class. Bunch of sissy-nanny bedwetters with the cheapest leased "fancy car" they can barely afford, driving around like the own the goddamned road.

They used to be great cars, back when they only had like 5 models in their line-up.  Then all of a sudden they decided that they needed to have a vehicle in every class, starting with that POS SUV built somewhere down south, by people that have never built cars before.

Their quality really has slipped badly since the 90's.

On the bright side, their resale value is also crap now, so you can get an S Class for 1/3 of MSRP when it's a few years old now.

I had an Audi about 30 years ago that everything broke on, including an accelerator cable(!) that took them three tries to find the right replacement since the part had changed that often in one model year. Not really fair to judge Audi by a 30 year old car nor MB by a 20 year old one.

The 2015 C-Class is a different ball game than past years. With the intro of the CLA as the entry level, MB really stepped up it's game to boost the new C-Class above the MB entry point. I picked up a C300 last month and it's a great car. 4 cyl-turbo, but kicks a** on all of the v-6's I've had. It's also great looking inside and out.

I used to drive them a few times per week using a car share (like Zipcar) and they were awful. Not fun to drive, under powered, and had weird sight lines. They get great fuel economy and are reliable, but it's not even worth it to buy over a Matrix (or something similar).
