OT - Talking Cars Tuesday

Submitted by Powderd Toast on

It's been a couple of weeks since we had our last Talking Cars Tuesday. Rather than letting it just die I figured we could use that as a topic starter. So without any further wait I pose this week's question to you.

What defunct car brand/model would you bring back from the dead if you had the funds?

For me it's AMC. They made some pretty sweet yet odd muscle cars that weren't really appreciated much at the time, but have definitely become collector targets.

exactly like that, with the dark vinyl top and everything.  I bought it in high school with my own money.  It only had 36k miles on it (in the early 90's).

After a few years of a teenager beating the hell out of it, it needed some work.  It got parked in a "friends" garage for the winter and I never saw it again.

Hell, it might still be there.  I should call her, but that's can of worms that I don't want to open, even 20 years later.

Yeah it pisses me off that cars like the Charger, Challenger, Camaro and the Mustang either made a comeback, or went to a more retro style, while the Cutlass didn't have a chance to experience that. Somehow, I think GM would have found a way to fuck it up, given their last outing with the Cutlass.

To elaborate, keep the styling but improve engine performance and add bells/whistles like LED lighting, fully integrated infotainment/nav/smart features, creature comforts, etc. keep the gull wing doors, obviously.

Also, John Delorean was born in Detroit so that's kind of cool, too.

Alfa Romeo in its former incarnation. I've seen the new ones that look like supercars, but i'd like to see them bring back a sedan or a coupe, or even my beloved Spider (but not as a supercharged sports car - more as a roadster).

They currently only offer the 4C in the US (a 2 seat sportscar), but they have big plans. New sedans, RWD only, etc. It'll be interesting to see if there's room for them in the US. With Maserati moving slightly downmarket, if Alfa is to become essentially a BMW competitor, it'll be interesting to see how they move the cars.

Also, there was going to be a new Alfa Spider based on the new (amazing) Mazda Miata, but FCA determined that it wasn't quite enough. So the FCA model is being badged as an Abarth roadster.

The Miata has 155hp from a NA 2.0L. Which engine will FCA give it? None of their small 4 bangers are set up to go longitudinal yet. Will it be the 1.6L Abarth motor? The 170hp/160ft-lbs could be enough to differentiate it from the miata. If they wedge the 4C motor in it's going to be VERY de-tuned... We'll see.

great little car and the price wasn't bad either.  Had a reputation for poor reliability but mine treated me right....

As for the AMC, the American Eagle wagon was a Subaru Outback before the Outback.  If the quality were even okay it would have made the company hugely successful.  Unfortunately the things ran about as long as Yugos.  alas.

Boattail Speedster is the most beautiful car I have ever seen.   It would be interesting to see what they would design using modern technology.

None of them.  All the good cars that have been made for a long time are still being produced today. If anything, we need LESS car manufacturers in the world.  Or MORE focusing on EV / diesel engines.

someone needs to listen to Red Barchetta.

I have a buddy who just can't wait for auto driving cars, and wants them to make self driving vehicles illegal. His ideal world is one where no one drives, and there is fractional ownership of automobiles.

I love driving.

You should probably stop hanging out with that guy.

If what he wants comes to pass, 3.5 million truck drivers will be jobless.  And that's pretty much the last job you can get without a degree and still be able to afford a house and food.

I love driving too.  Even sitting in traffic.  Now that I have a family, it's pretty much the only alone time I get.

I largely have :-)

Yes. I asked how a major economic downturn suited him if we lost large chunks of the auto industry (foreign or domestic) through radically diminished demand.

HAH!

It would have been a better question to ask, "What classic car would you like to see brought back, modernized, and manufactured again for the public?"

Much higher universe of responses.  Most of the car companies that are dead are dead for a reason, and many people on this board are too young to remember most of them (save Pontiac or Olds).

FWIW the clear answer to my question from earlier is a BMW M1 (given Toyota is bringing back the Supra and Ford is bringing back the GT, again).

Packard was a great carmaker beaten by circumstance rather than quality/design.

We also need more manufacturers in order to focus on alternative propulsion.

Lastly, three models (not brands) I'd like to see come back:  A real GTO, an old school Toyota Landcruiser, Rover returning to its English roots and combining British motoring sensibility with German or Japanese or now American quality controls.
