OT? Tailgating Traditions (Cornhole, etc.)

Submitted by Bosch on

Most of us who hold season tickets received ours this past week.  If you didn't have a burning desire for football Saturdays prior to that, you likely do now.  And if you are anything like me, you are looking forward to the complete football Saturday experience... the tailgating as well as the game itself.

Who amongst you are the die hard tailgaters?  Where is your preferred tailgate location?  How many people usually in your group?  How do you pass the time, e.g., Cornhole, Ladder Golf, Washers, Beer Pong, etc.?

I combined my tickets with 2 other guys to give us 6 seats together.  We usually get some stragglers every game to give us a group of 10 or so at our tailgate. We usually pull into Ann Arbor about 7:30 every Saturday regardless of the game start time.  We used to park exclusively on the AAGO course but then they went and instituted their ridiculous parking policy so we relocated to the U of M course of off Main.  As it turns out, the AAGO did us a favor.  We used to park on the Stadium Street fence every game at the AAGO.  We could leave the tailgate 5 minutes before kick off and not miss one play.  We certainly have a further walk now.  However, that is the only downside of the new location.  It is better than the AAGO in every other way, including the room we have for setting up canopies, games, etc.  For a good tailgate, this is key.  We spend a good deal of time playing No Limit Hold Em.  When that gets old, we toss the bean bags.

Which brings me to the real point of this post...... We're always looking for some good competition.  For poker, we play small stakes, $5 or $10 buy in for tournaments.  Weusually have 8 or so that buy in.  If anyone wants to play, we won't turn them away.  For Cornhole, we play to 21, no cancels unless we are playing on someone elses board (home field rules).  Anyone out there possibly interested in a Tailgate Cornhole Tournament?  Depending on the response, I may continue this discussion later.......

This reminds me of Fall 2007 when ND came to AA.  We had a big tailgate at our house on Division with a bunch of my roommate's ND friends and played 5 on 5 full cup UM v. ND flip cup incessantly.  Needless to say, we beat them about as bad as what went down on the field.  Highly recommended pastime.

Well our group is a pretty die hard tailgating group.  The first part of our group gets to the Crisler lot at 7a at the latest.  Then the second part of our group which involves a small u-haul truck comes in and we unload the u-haul with all our tailgating equipment.  We are spread out over 2 spots and the grass island.  We have made to order omlettes and bagels & cream cheese in the morning and then brats, hot dogs, & burgers for the afternoon either after a noon game or before the 3:30p.  We have cornhole set up across the outer street of the Crisler Lot and have satelite TV on the grass island that we refer to as the "Living Room."  We never leave before 7p no matter what time the game is over.  And one game a year we had deep fried turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing.

Our group size if it is raining and miserable (i.e. Northwestern game 2 seasons ago) is only about 16 people.  If it is a big game and nice out we get as many as 60 people at the tailgate at one time with many others coming and going.
