OT - T A&M fan poses as racist Longhorn Fan, backfires

Submitted by GVSUGoBlue on
Wow. Here's another reason to not tweet at recruits. http://www.bigdaddyscourt.com/blog/2016/4/21/texas-am-college-student-i… Guy pretended to be a Texas fan to screw with recruits, this backfired. Using racist and homophobic comments, it was found that he had multiple accounts attempting to create chaos.

I posted this on another thread, but it bears repeating: Everything you tweet is archived at the Library of Congress. Everything. Forever. Someday, some statistical historians are going to run an analysis of this Twitter archive, and come to the conclusion that there was really no social progress between 1776 and 2016.

If you seach the Library of Congress they actually talk about the "mission at the Library of Congress is to collect the story of America" and "to aquire an archive from the popular social media service Twitter"

It was signed in April 2010 between the Library and Twitter, and archived all tweets from 2006, with (at the time of Jan 2013) over 170 billion tweets.

Here is the web page and the PDF report.

I need to fix this. "I would hope that the idiots at Michigan aren't saying racist things." That's all you need to say.

Smart enough not to get caught . . . the implication is somehow, if you're smart enough, it is ok. And this is just wrong whether you are caught or not.

And smart enough to stop. If you were smart enough, you never would have started.

People like this make me feel better about myself. I am obsessed with Michigan football but not to the point that I'd pose as a rival and make racist comments. People suck.

The blog doesn't really set out a timeline. I wonder if this genius was inspired by the recent stories about Rashan Gary being sent racist tweets. Too bad he wasn't smart enough to realize it wouldn't work. I think this fellow's career just received a Darwin award.

I can say that - given a few exchanges I've been unfortunately involved in on Twitter - there probably are Michigan fans out there who, if they aren't doing it, likely would have no problem doing this because they have skewed values (to put it tactfully) and don't care about the whole "don't tweet at recruits" thing, which usually leads to some stupid shit. Speaking of stupid:

One thing that was pointed out by THujone (the guy who destroyed Mr. Figurelli on ShaggyTexas) was how similar all of these accounts were. They were all created recently, had minimal followers, and all they did was tweet at Texas recruits. Also, how the tweets were strategically written (a racial slur first, then a homophobic slur second) rose the thought that maybe, just maybe these accounts were all ran by the same guy!

At least pretend to be different assholes if you're determined to go down this road, not the same asshole on multiple accounts. Actually, just skip this altogether next time.

Wow, the Texas forum member they're crediting with blowing everything up, THujone, is the guy that does Prevail and Ride, the hilarious (and phallus-filled) collection of MS Paint college football comics.  Doing the lord's work, truly.

ShaggyTexas used to be ShaggyBevo, with Bevo being the Texas Longhorn's mascot.  Texas AD Steve Patterson (Basically their Dave Brandon) went around crushing fan usage of copywrited names, including them.  I imagine that's at least part of where the lawyers came in.

I'd like to give the kid the benefit of the doubt, or at least innocent until proven guilty. Here's a recap where the person actually contacted the kid. Doesn't sound good.

Holy shit. I read through your link, and this whole situation just got a lot less funny. Nothing is OK about this, from the racist tweets to blaming the innocent friend to the alleged death threats against Daniel and his girlfriend. I agree with some of the posters on that site: this guy is dug in so deep that he can't help but keep digging. Thought he was being clever, but it's all blown up on him.

Brian posted some time ago about how people need to stop overreacting to Twitter eggs saying terrible things and believing it is a pandemic.  This is the perfect microcosm of the end result; you have a guy trying to concern troll people to the nth degree while being the culprit, all for the attention.  Just ignore people who say terrible things; if there is a name or face attached to it, then maybe look into it.  But if "OSUBu$terX" with 4 followers is tweeting terrible things, don't pay attention.

That said, it must suck to be a semi-high-profile athlete now with social media.  There are SO MANY sad little people out there trying to attack you.

Unfortunate, but quite entertaining. This dude will have a tough time living this down. It's the first thing you see in Google when you search him. How can you expect to get a job when Google says you're a racist. He's getting what he deserves. I'm guessing he has to change his name eventually. What a dumb thing to do and yet how awesome is it that it bites him in the ass.
